Could only be the UK surely. But not much to go on as to where.

I assume deems is correct ?

Fenners' Pen (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 21 January 2021 03:49 (three years ago) link

You assume wrong

cherry blossom, Thursday, 21 January 2021 04:11 (three years ago) link

Liverpool?

Fenners' Pen (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 21 January 2021 04:21 (three years ago) link

Quite a lot of those back-to-backs in Leeds too.

Tim, Thursday, 21 January 2021 09:00 (three years ago) link

Looks a lot like Liverpool

or something, Thursday, 21 January 2021 10:55 (three years ago) link

Wavertree, to be specific

or something, Thursday, 21 January 2021 10:56 (three years ago) link

Just to throw another one in the mix, it could maybe be Salford or another bit on the outskirts of Manchester.

brain (krakow), Thursday, 21 January 2021 10:57 (three years ago) link

It's not Auchtermuchty.

Waterloo Subset (Tom D.), Thursday, 21 January 2021 11:02 (three years ago) link

And yet... the houses look a touch boxy for wavertree. Could be any big northern city

or something, Thursday, 21 January 2021 11:03 (three years ago) link

very familiar but I've never seen corner houses like this before with the ground floor window at the side and not at the front door side.

Two Meter Peter (Ste), Thursday, 21 January 2021 11:31 (three years ago) link

Also that's one house per corner? no back area, weird.

Two Meter Peter (Ste), Thursday, 21 January 2021 11:33 (three years ago) link

Yeah I think Ive only seen that type in Leeds, but I'm not anywhere near as familiar with the housing stock of other big northern towns. (I remember someone who worked in housing there in the early 90s telling me that the vast tracts of these back to backs in north-east Leeds were the highest density housing in Europe; even most of those had little front yards.)

Tim, Thursday, 21 January 2021 11:48 (three years ago) link

If you're right then we've dodged the bullet of having to look at more photos of Leeds.

Waterloo Subset (Tom D.), Thursday, 21 January 2021 12:39 (three years ago) link

Rochdale?

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Thursday, 21 January 2021 12:54 (three years ago) link

I'll take this as the guess and it is correct, Leeds it is. Though south-west Leeds, not north-east. Holbeck to be precise

cherry blossom, Friday, 22 January 2021 16:52 (three years ago) link

FUCK, i forgot to crop it lol.

satanist of size (map), Sunday, 24 January 2021 03:05 (three years ago) link

Brrrr

Canon in Deez (silby), Sunday, 24 January 2021 04:10 (three years ago) link

Honolulu?

Zelda Zonk, Sunday, 24 January 2021 04:48 (three years ago) link

JFC those terraced neighbourhoods are depressing (been google streetviewing though Holbeck just now)

StanM, Sunday, 24 January 2021 10:48 (three years ago) link

I've seen worse. A lot worse.

Waterloo Subset (Tom D.), Sunday, 24 January 2021 11:33 (three years ago) link

I lived in two or three back-to-back houses like that in Leeds, they were solidly-built and fine to live in. You really are living close to other people though, you can hear life going on through the walls on three sides.

Best not think about the risk of fire with only one way in and out, of course.

Tim, Sunday, 24 January 2021 12:13 (three years ago) link

There was the occasion when a friend of mine was up to no good with a young lady in one of these, on the next street along from his actual girlfriend of the time. He hadn’t worked out that these two women’s bedrooms shared a back wall. Unfortunately my friend had an extremely characteristic smoker’s cough at the time and found himself dumped in short order.

can we just forget i posted jan 24? it'll save some people the displeasure of rooting around american interior west shitholes until they stumble on laramie, wyoming.

I've been there, it was nice

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 25 January 2021 22:57 (three years ago) link

But, like, for one night

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 25 January 2021 22:58 (three years ago) link

Yes this is a city

Hmm I think I've worked it out but googling what I did to do so, for such a quick result, seems a little..unsporting.

nashwan, Monday, 25 January 2021 23:18 (three years ago) link

I did think someone would probably get this one quite quickly

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 25 January 2021 23:21 (three years ago) link

I'll just give it a few minutes if someone else knows without needing to do cursory research of Europe's tallest urban viaducts.

nashwan, Monday, 25 January 2021 23:28 (three years ago) link

that bridge/viaduct is distinctive - not that i can find it via google

Fenners' Pen (jim in vancouver), Monday, 25 January 2021 23:32 (three years ago) link

Luxembourg?

pomenitul, Monday, 25 January 2021 23:32 (three years ago) link

it is, yes

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 25 January 2021 23:34 (three years ago) link

did you get it from the viaduct or via another method?

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 25 January 2021 23:38 (three years ago) link

ARGH I knew it looked familiar, and I did a similar Google search

flamboyant goon tie included, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 01:40 (three years ago) link

I've been to Luxembourg and that photo sparked some distant memories.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 01:40 (three years ago) link

Vladivostok?

pomenitul, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 02:18 (three years ago) link

yes

satanist of size (map), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 02:36 (three years ago) link

yesssss

pomenitul, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 02:38 (three years ago) link

how are you people so good at this

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 02:48 (three years ago) link

Lemme try one:

pomenitul, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 03:07 (three years ago) link

is that ... penza?

budo jeru, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 03:37 (three years ago) link

xxxpost, but seriously, how do you look at that photo and guess, correctly, Vladivostok on the first guess? i'm genuinely curious.

alpine static, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 08:26 (three years ago) link

yeah i'm stumped too, I don't see anything distinctive in that night photo

Two Meter Peter (Ste), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 08:53 (three years ago) link

I would never have got the Vladivostok one. I came across some good Vladivostok shots a couple of weeks ago and was going to use one. It does have a distinctive feel - but thats in the daytime. Night time shots are really tough

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 09:09 (three years ago) link

Struggling with that last one too. I thought the lights might be a clue

is that ... penza?

― budo jeru,

I checked and they have similar lights (that I could fine) but with two bulbs not three (this was near the Duma)

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 09:11 (three years ago) link

how do you look at that photo and guess, correctly, Vladivostok on the first guess?

1. Ex-Soviet apartment blocks
2. Port town
3. If you zoom in, there's a truncated word that gives you a partial clue

pomenitul, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 13:03 (three years ago) link

These are too easy, let's go back to Podunk, Arkansas (pop. 3,220).
