for sure and i am hopeful the new boss can't be as bad as the old boss, but frankly until i and everyone i love (and hey everyone else too) is inoculated against the current plague with the MOTHERFUCKING EXTANT VACCINE THAT OUR DYSFUNCTIONAL GOVERNMENT IS INCAPABLE OF ADMINISTRATING, i am gonna stay mired in my daily existential crisis thanks

every death in this country at this point is even more senseless than before, more egregious, more criminal, more damnable

found what I wrote on 11/9 on FB:

"He is a bully that ran roughshod over many people. He is a misogynist, a likely sexual assault artist, and a failed business man who was born on third. He is a xenophobic scaremonger that is stoking fires that really shouldn't be stoked.
Putting this man in office validates this behavior to many people.

So forgive me if I don't find your "ho ho ho he's just a President, not a dictator" smugness amusing. There are tensions brewing in this country that this could be set off. Think about the Cliven Bundys of this world. Rebellion against.....being told what to do. Might makes right. That it comes at the expense of what would have been a landmark, the first female President, feels like another blow to the solar plexus."

god I'm glad I didn't have the ability to tell my younger self that it'd be even worse than imagined.

Frankly, I think we got out of these four years much more easily than we might have. Yes, things are going to be bad for a long while as a direct result of the Trump administration, but they could've been so much worse. Had he been more focused/motivated/competent, we could likely have suffered any number of 1/6-es prior to 1/6.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has obtained an arrest warrant for a woman alleged to have stolen a laptop from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, with the intention of selling the device to the Russian equivalent of the Central Intelligence Agency.

In an affidavit signed on Sunday, FBI Special Agent Jonathan Lund said the agency was investigating Riley June Williams after a person described as her “former romantic partner” told authorities that Williams intended to send the computer to a friend in Russia who would then pass it along to the SVR, the country’s spy force.

Lund wrote that the former romantic partner said the transfer of the laptop “fell through for unknown reasons” and that Williams either still has the device or destroyed it.

I have never in my lifetime ever read or heard about previous presidents being called into service to advise new administrations

Not, like, literally. Just that as I understand it or thought I'd heard it, presidents have been known to call one another on occasion for advice and recommendations. It is, after all, a pretty rarified club.

A different pillow company saw the images of National Guard troops bivouacked on the floor of the Capitol building and decided to donate hundreds of travel pillows and sleep masks to the troops. After much wrangling they were able to deliver to a detachment of NG troops on standby in DC.

It's been a long day, but I have pillow news! To recap: National Guard sleeping on hard floors while defending our Capitol. Lots of you tagged us asking if we could help. We tweeted in search of a service member in DC, and had a hit within an hour. 1/8

Somehow or other, as the inauguration is about about 36 hours away and Trump has not been able to tweet for over a week, the posting on this thread has changed its tenor and seems somewhat less frantic and anxious. I hope it is a sign of better things to come, but I don't feel entirely sanguine about that, yet.

One thing to say about the forthcoming pardons rampage is that it'll keep him busy on his last day, not to mention ordering all White House staff not to flush any toilets for the entire day.

Colonel Ralph Albertazzie, who piloted Air Force One flights during Nixon’s presidency, recounted how he called ground control to request changing the “Air Force One” call sign mid-flight in his 1979 book “The Flying White House”:

Air Force One was 39,000 feet over a point 13 miles southwest of Jefferson City, Missouri … The time was 3 minutes and 25 seconds past noon. Albertazzie picked up his microphone and spoke to ground control: ‘Kansas City, this was Air Force One. Will you change our call sign to SAM 27000?’

Back came the reply: ‘Roger, SAM 27000. Good luck to the President.’

‘Roger, 27000.’

And then I hope they make him circle the airport for three hours.

Fair play

Important policy news this weekend: @Sen_JoeManchin went on Inside West Virginia Politics and kept the door open to higher stimulus checks up to $2,000 (he prefers they be targeted but didn't draw a red line) and called for spending as much as $4 trillion (!) on infrastructure. pic.twitter.com/yG0aBBcxve

Manchin, for all of his faults, is still a Democrat*

* I recognize that this is one of his major faults for some but I assume people know what I mean here; he's still largely going to fall on the left side of centrism, which means he's going to support some policies that people to the left of him would support

Hello Nice FBI Lady (DJP), Tuesday, 19 January 2021 16:04 (three years ago) link

I remain wary of Manchin, but that sounds very encouraging (and I assume WV gets a big chunk of that $4T)

I was gonna say, if there's anything West Virginia politicians understand, it's infrastructure spending. That state has chronically high poverty and the most beautiful interstates and bridges you've ever seen. (Seriously, if you've never driven the New River Gorge Bridge, it's worth the trip — https://www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/nrgbridge.htm.)
