I'm revisiting the rebuilds (ok, I started at 2.22) and all the little hints in 2.22 that this is some kind of literal do-over / new cycle of reality are grin worthy

I definitely get where you're coming from brad but I can accept the new character dynamics a little better from that angle

not so much the marked increase in leering upskirt shots though

i am def more sensitive to eva becoming a harem anime than most

definitely if I were new to Eva I would find it very annoying

i also think people who haven't watched the first six episodes of eva 10000 times should watch 1.0, idk, it even affects me, someone who has seen the first six episodes of eva 1000 times. great emotional arc even if the new stuff is neither wildly nor radically new

it's funny how the rebuilds don't even really work as standalone movies..imo 2.22 and 3.33 are both more like "riffs" on the existing mythos than coherent films with a beginning/middle/end, and I can't imagine anyone who hasn't already seen the series and EoE getting much out of them other than the pretty images (of which there are a lot)

I haven't been tempted yet to watch anything after EoE. There's probably some merit to the Rebuilds, but I kinda get the sense that they're not the real deal.

and there definitely are eva fans who have only seen the rebuilds. i have no idea what their lives are like

one thing I liked in 2.22 was that you got a little bit of a sense of Toyko-3 as an actual place people live their lives in - in the show I often got the impression this massive city was basically just a high school and a lot of empty streets and buildings lol

my fav part of 2.22 is the field trip to the anti-climate change facility

there's also a montage of the city that none of the main characters work into until the last shot and that is not something we ever get in the series yeah

it's funny though, it's not like tokyo-3 matters or meaningfully exists by the third movie lol

it does give the emptiness of the environments in 3.33 a little extra impact tho

I laughed out loud when I hit the credits of 3.33 and the preview for 3.0+1.0 promised "lots of fan service". Oh, like what I just watched?

i was talking to my friend about how 2's nonstop fanservice pivots into 3's total absence of it and she was like "no there's fanservice in 3!!! it's just fanservice for girls"

there's a piano-led tune in (I think) 2.22 that I kept wishing was a Japanese version of "Fear is a Man's Best Friend"
