absolutely refuse to watch this any more after that miss, night all, fuck higgins

imago, Sunday, 17 January 2021 23:16 (three years ago) link

oh he won, sick :D

imago, Sunday, 17 January 2021 23:59 (three years ago) link

I'm too old to be watching these finals into the night #sadlol but I had to keep watching.

Delighted Yan won obv. His comeback from 67 down and winning on the re-spotted black is one for the books. So was Higgins' lol in-off off the black.

I'll rep for Steve Magma Davis any day of the week, but he looked more off than he sounded last night. He just didn't look well.

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 18 January 2021 08:15 (three years ago) link

It was odd watching Yan, he actually reminded me of a young John Higgins in terms of maturity for his age. Virgo talked about him learning shot selection but actually all of his game was in good working order apart from some of the long pots but I'm assuming that was just some final fatigue.

Only thing is seeing what his match play might be like over those long crucible sessions but he could be the first Chinese world champion.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 18 January 2021 12:12 (three years ago) link

yeah his safety play was accurate and his choices usually very pragmatic, definitely gonna be that sort of player, but hopefully without higgins' whole vibe

imago, Monday, 18 January 2021 13:32 (three years ago) link

A lot of sport is just seeing really young ppl be dead good at something with 'no fear' clichés, it's rare to see someone young express what could be described as maturity at a young age. Need to watch more of Yan, but looks like that's what he does have.

I was totally happy with Higgins when he came on the scene because of that quality, plus Hendry was dominating so seeing him, O'Sullivan, Williams was really good. Then got pissed off at him for taking cash and beating some challengers, and being on top of O'Sullivan more than I'd like.

The weird thing is Higgins lost more than Yan won. Made some old man errors that caught up with him.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 18 January 2021 13:44 (three years ago) link

Virgo is way past his expiration date, veering into self-caricature territory.

I think Yan's shot selection was, overall, excellent. And for a 20-year old I was amazed how well he read the game. Several examples of Virgo, but also Taylor and Doherty questioning if he'd seen that the pink wouldn't go back on it's spot, surely he wouldn't try that ridiculous plant etc. He proved them wrong time and again. (there was the one error, if you can call it that, where Yan left the cue ball around the blue, from which Higgins made an outrageous four ball plant)

He let Higgins in several times after attempting, and failing, a long pot; he was brash/bold/aggressive in those. But he's 20 ffs, you're supposed to be like that. If anything I was amazed at how cool and patient he was when it came down to the final black two times.

This is correct. Higgins made more old man errors than Yan made rising star errors.

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 18 January 2021 13:53 (three years ago) link

Higgins should have won by miles.

I enjoyed watching Yan all week but that was an error strewn performance that you'd normally expect to be punished.

Good job Higgins doesn't have form for throwing matches...

Started watching this year (and only on and off) from the end of the quarters. Disappointing how Wilson folded, not sure I can give a shit.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 1 May 2021 20:25 (two years ago) link

Though Bingham has tried his heart out there. Made a brilliant chance, needs to take it otherwise this one-off 5th session will not go all the way

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 1 May 2021 20:34 (two years ago) link

He should be banned from world sport for that outfit he's wearing this evening, that is criminal.

Can just see Selby being public enemy no 1 if he wins this by boring Murphy off the table. Commentators uncharacteristically getting pissy and it's just the 1st session.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 2 May 2021 14:56 (two years ago) link

Murphy good so far: 4-3 with one more frame to come

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 2 May 2021 14:57 (two years ago) link

They're good mates aren't they? Funny how everyone hated Murphy ten years ago and now he's one of the better-liked players.

imago, Sunday, 2 May 2021 15:12 (two years ago) link

7-7, just rumbling along..

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 2 May 2021 20:33 (two years ago) link

Tied Murphy in knots here, nothing controversial, should be 10-7 up overnight and well on his way to a 4th world title

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 2 May 2021 21:52 (two years ago) link

Doherty and Hendry otm re: Murphy. You are not going to get 3/4 sbookers off Selby. It's also a pretty laughable sight. What Murphy can do is outscore.

Very hard to see this going any other way.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 2 May 2021 22:26 (two years ago) link

Shared session. A glimpse that Murphy could get on a run but seeing is believing.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 3 May 2021 15:41 (two years ago) link

Murphy keeping the hope alive!

calzino, Monday, 3 May 2021 20:53 (two years ago) link

oh fuck he takes some real gambler type decisions that go wrong does Murphy

calzino, Monday, 3 May 2021 21:11 (two years ago) link

Would've been an incredible, all-time red.

Selby had loads of insurance by the time his long potting went to shit. It was terrific how he chose a safety instead of the red to the middle. Just that pinch of conservatism to get him over the line.

Selby is on his way out. Yan is a really top player though, that shot to pot the brown to go 11-7 up was a bit of magic. Just willed that in.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 23 April 2022 19:17 (one year ago) link

Lol @ Selby losing the longest frames (including the longest in crucible history). He is one away from going home.

wilson bingham shaping up into a humdinger

im zelenky (||||||||), Sunday, 24 April 2022 21:30 (one year ago) link

Yeah Bingham should've closed it out actually but he made a stupid error on 8-5. Wilson then grabbed the rest of the session.

if i was Neil Robertson i would simply ask my barber not to make me look like a twat

Yeah really good. And he wins at the next.

Don't think he's that good on the safety game but I am glad Robertson is out.

Saengkham's shoes are extremely cool

calzino, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 00:10 (one year ago) link

O'Sullivan is pretty much in the semis. Totally undisturbed run.

Yan has been brilliant tonight. 6-2 down now 7-7. This breaks started with a double.

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 21:11 (one year ago) link

Another beautiful century by O'Sullivan to reach his 13th century SF. He wins it 50% of the time from here you know.

I introduced snooker to my in-laws over in Poland over Easter! They all got hooked on it. We were watching on Eurosport. It was annoying how when Radzi Chinyanganya was talking to pundits Jimmy and Ronnie* who were pundits in what looked like a basement their voices were immediately overlaid with the Lektor translation, but that's Polish TV for you! For some reason Poles have never got into subtitles.

* playing and pundit-ing. Bit unusual, I thought.

Grandpont Genie, Wednesday, 27 April 2022 11:08 (one year ago) link

Danger signs for Mark Williams. 9-8 down then on a 28 break and an easy miss on a red..
