I'm still down to do the no wave poll even though a bunch of stuff has skipped ahead ... I just figured someone would contact me or something and let me know it was my turn ... nbd

Maybe it's time to reinstate a running order extending several polls ahead. Might help in getting long-delayed polls firmly back on the agenda AND reduce stagnant periods, which have sometimes been quite protracted recently.

If I was in charge I'd actually just allocate a calendar month for each poll. Possibly starting March 1st, seeing as EOY polls seem to extend through much of Feb. And then a new poll from the 1st of each month. Easy. And no guesswork or waiting around. If a poll-runner was contemplating a weirdly bloated voting period or rollout, they'd know to expect the potential* distraction of the next month's poll, which would start regardless. :)

*very few are interested in every single poll, after all.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 16 January 2021 09:15 (three years ago) link

so you are saying it should read like this?

March: Hard Rock/Hair Metal - gr8080

if gr8080 is still around then he can say i'll do it or ask someone to take his place in running it?

April: Stephin Merritt - Gukbe

i would love another Gukbe poll

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 January 2021 01:26 (three years ago) link

Kinda. You'd presumably still need to negotiate who goes into given slots. I'm just wondering out loud whether an actual date rather than "whenever X and Y has finished" might improve turnaround and reduce stagnant periods.

It sometimes feels like the next poll to go ahead has been dictated a little too much by whoever happens to visit this thread in quiet periods. I mean, I've benefited from this myself, but I happily concede that I probably shouldn't have had the opportunity to run 4 polls in 2 years, typically on short notice, while sarahell and charlie rex (for example) have been waiting far, far longer. And seemingly mainly because I've been attentive to this thread when things have stagnated!

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 17 January 2021 02:07 (three years ago) link

the problem has been that a lot of the people who signed up years ago haven't been around so 'everyone just waits their turn' stopped working years ago leading to the current system of people just run one when there's a gap and they want to do it

ufo, Sunday, 17 January 2021 03:13 (three years ago) link

Some names are surely inactive. But there are plenty of recent signs that others really *have* been waiting patiently. The aforementioned No Wave poll was suggested in 2014. Oor Neechy mentions being on the list under multiple aliases. And the last two 2020 single-artist polls had been on the list for absolutely ages: Nick Cave since '14, The Cramps since '16.

Looking back to the original thread it's striking how tight the operation was in the early days. Amazing.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 03:15 (three years ago) link

not sure if WmC or Leee really signed up but there weren't a lot of things added this last year. if you want to be removed just let me know and i'll update.

cramps was recently done by moka

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 03:21 (three years ago) link

it's there number 105, just didn't delist it. thanks for letting me know.

my spelling error for MF Doom is quite funny to me.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 03:24 (three years ago) link

I don't remember signing up for punk tracks. Take me off -- I'm done running polls unless it's to rerun Bacharach every few years.

Motoroller Scampotron (WmC), Tuesday, 9 February 2021 03:48 (three years ago) link

Can you put me down to do Sparks, seems like a good year to do it.

Dan Worsley, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 08:23 (three years ago) link

I suggested MF Doom but am not able to do it myself.

Chris L, Tuesday, 9 February 2021 12:06 (three years ago) link

bravo once again Bee OK for keeping up the list!

please mark Billy Joel unclaimed next time around --- i'm definitely satisfied with having run the career-spanning listening thread. i would say just take it off the list, but if someone else wants to do it, they totally should!

Where's Stevie D, can we bump Aphex up?

octobeard, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 04:29 (three years ago) link

since the Metal poll is never going to close, anyone ready to go for the next one? i really think MF Doom should go next but open to anything at this point.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 03:36 (three years ago) link

or maybe we should do Daft Punk but someone will need to volunteer for that one.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 24 February 2021 17:30 (three years ago) link

^^ force it onto DJP imo

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 24 February 2021 18:10 (three years ago) link

Have we not done Rundgren? I’m still scared of running a poll but could maybe be convinced.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 27 February 2021 06:34 (three years ago) link

do it! they are really fun to run especially if you're a huge fan of said artist. i will say it's a lot of work but the rewards are worth it.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 February 2021 00:29 (three years ago) link

I'll vote in that one for sure.

clemenza, Sunday, 28 February 2021 00:36 (three years ago) link

I'll also vote, especially if we have a sub-poll for "Favourite New Cars song".

Halfway there but for you, Sunday, 28 February 2021 00:48 (three years ago) link

Ok I’m game. Do I have to wait in a queue? How we do decide these things?

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 28 February 2021 03:44 (three years ago) link

if you want to do it now you probably just can since no one else has volunteered to run one right now yet

two weeks pass...

Wonder what would be the interest in a Loudon Wainwright III poll, apart from myself and NTI. I could try to run it (first time will be the charm), might not be able to do it until the summer.

The Ballad of Mel Cooley (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 19 March 2021 20:17 (three years ago) link

I would follow results, would like to get into him. But wouldn’t be able to vote.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Saturday, 20 March 2021 14:15 (three years ago) link

Voting just closed for the Todd Rundgren poll. What are best practices for rolling out the results? I have most of the ballots tabulated already, but will have to prep the results.

Foe instance, are there better days to roll them out (ie, weekdays versus weekends)? And how quickly? I know that I tend to like slower results with more time for people to weigh in and comment. But I also don’t want to drag things out or slow down other polls.

Thx in advance for suggestions.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 22 March 2021 22:38 (three years ago) link

However the pollrunner feels like or has time to roll them out imo, it's a feature not a bug that people run things differently.

(I always try to have my text and links and images ready at least a day at a time, and when possible to hold off on dropping a result until a bit of discussion on the previous result has had time to roll. Some people like to hit a certain pace of rollout and let the discussion fall where it may. Weekdays are usually better for engagement, but you'll probably catch some different commenters with a few results teased over a weekend.)

armoured van, Holden (sic), Monday, 22 March 2021 22:46 (three years ago) link

i'm always an advocate for slow rollouts. better to have some days that are light on discussion have it all go by in a blur - IMO!

i also don't think there's any issue with a results rollout happening simultaneous with another polls' voting period; the only thing that really necessitates Order And Timing (again IMO) is to avoid having multiple simultaneous *voting* periods, because making a ballot takes time and energy so they end up competing with each other and worsening all the polls. especially key for those of us who like to do some listening as we tinker intermittently with the ballots, or to haunt the voting thread for recommendations etc.

this honking's on a bobo (Doctor Casino), Monday, 22 March 2021 22:48 (three years ago) link

I hate doing fancy images to go with the rollout, so I was putting out Led Zeppelin results within an hour of getting out of bed after the deadline passed. Still took tracks ballots (well, one ballot) while I was rolling out album results.

Motoroller Scampotron (WmC), Monday, 22 March 2021 22:51 (three years ago) link

i have usually done a roll out when i got up on my day off, so around 9 - 10 AM ish on the West Coast. depending on how many you may want to roll out, i usually roll out about 20 - 25 per day and one result every 20 minutes or so. also have run things during the week but have some spill over until Saturday and even my Steely Dan one ran into a Sunday.

Bee OK, Monday, 22 March 2021 23:00 (three years ago) link

think i have been closer to 15 per day. so say, 15 per day and spread out over around 20 minutes each then it would be a five hour rollout. perfect, imo.

Bee OK, Monday, 22 March 2021 23:10 (three years ago) link

This is awesome feedback and advice, thanks, everyone!

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 23 March 2021 00:40 (three years ago) link

alternative: five per day! or three! if i ever do a poll again that's where i'll be. i hate "missing" the rollout convo cause of work or w/e, but also you'll never please everybody, so whatever feels good to *you* is the best standard - you're putting in all the work after all!

this honking's on a bobo (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 11:42 (three years ago) link

Good input for me too--DOOM poll upcoming is my first. I was thinking to wait til right after the Rundgren rollout is done if that's alright.

maf you one two (maffew12), Tuesday, 23 March 2021 14:34 (three years ago) link

so is the situation now that there isn't any real order to any of these and I can just do my no wave poll whenever, like before we had this thread to organize things?
