I got as far as "my scepticism with the medical mafia began when my sister was diagnosed with cancer and given just 12 months to live. me and my mam scoured the internet for a cure but she died anyway."

was reading article in the guardian on marianne faithfull's new album and her near death from covid and remembered reading years ago that she and van morrison lived in the same village and used to sit in each others kitchens drinking whiskey. was wondering if they still spoke and if she'd be upbraiding him right now

two weeks pass...

Is it any wonder why the UK is suffering one of worst in the world with #COVID19?

English band ‘Right Said Fred’ brag about refusing to wear a mask at Heathrow, claims staff applauded move & for “speaking out on Covid”

uncharacteristic factual slipup from El Sic there!

I put it to the court that context clearly indicates a slip of the digital tongue rather than an error of fact, but will make no other pleading

Oh no! Shame Derek Bailey's no longer with us so he could have taken the opposing viewpoint just on principle.

I was just the other day blasting out the opening track on the latest Alexander Hawkins and thinking this old bastard can still play with some fire, it's a shame really but I'm not often surprised that most musicians are complete arsewipes these days.

Someone needs to poll these. Or maybe not.

1. « Follow the money. »
2. « The CDC hadn’t had a decent plague since polio. »
3. « Cell biology is a bunch of magic. »
4. « The number of cases went up epidemically, you know, exponentially, because the number of tests went up exponentially. »
5. « Lives have been totally ruined by this thing. »
6. « We don’t really know what it’s going to do. The immune system is incredibly complicated and immunologists’ brains are not complicated enough to deal with it. »
7. « There are no Old Wise Men up there at the top of Science. »
8. « The Science is being judged by people, the funding is being done by people who don’t understand it – and who does? Fauci?! Fauci doesn’t know enough. If Fauci wants to get on television with somebody who knows a little bit about this stuff and debate why, he could do it, because he has been asked. »
9. « It might not be such a bad thing to have sex. »

Anyway, fuck it, I've seen the guy play dozens of times, I don't need to see him ever again. So that's fine.

I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 11:59 (three years ago) link

Why would you not want to see him again just because he's come out with this crap? Seems like a weird position to take.

it seems like the only reasonable position?

adam, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 12:33 (three years ago) link

If I was a big fan of his it might be considered a weird position to take? I suppose? But I'm not. He's someone I'd go and see sometimes when my main jazz buff friend suggested it, if he was playing with someone interesting usually, and he used to play all the time - pre-plandemic.

I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 12:40 (three years ago) link

I have no problem with supporting artists whose work I admire but who then come out with nonsense like this. Doesn't bother me in the least tbh.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 12:48 (three years ago) link

I suppose I don't admire him enough then.

I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 12:54 (three years ago) link

Given that the guy's 76 now I wonder if he accepted the offer of vaccination? On the quiet, like.

spot fuckify (Matt #2), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 12:58 (three years ago) link

The COVID/AIDS link up is the most reprehensible aspect.

I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 13:03 (three years ago) link

Anyway, the piece is called "Rockets for Kary Mullis", which is appropriate because, having just read up on Kary Mullis, he would appear to have been, what they would call in Glasgow, a total fuckin' rocket.

I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 13:09 (three years ago) link

Well, that’s disappointing.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 14:17 (three years ago) link

As someone in Glasgow, I can confirm everyone here woulkd say that Kary Mullis was 100% a total fuckin' rocket.

Evan Parker can go fuck himself. i think not going to see a Covid denier perform is the only reasonable position to take. As he is also an AIDS denier I might consider actively picketing any gig he played in my town.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 14:41 (three years ago) link

I'm fine with continuing to enjoy music by ppl I dislike but going to see them live implies giving them money and that's a red line, nothing strange about what Tom said at all.

Penny Rimbaud of Crass

Covid-19 is the result of genetic tampering, as are the so-called vaccines being employed to counter it. Beneath all this, there is the underlying stench of eugenics. Watch out for Big Pharma brainwash. We are as we are as nature that so we be. pic.twitter.com/etsgr6jZaj

Another non-surprise. A guy I know really well from an 80s anarcho band seems to have gone the same way, it's the pivot point where anti-authoritarianism meets excessive weed abuse.

spot fuckify (Matt #2), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 14:57 (three years ago) link

Penny Rimbaud! :(

Gratuitous name drop : I am working on a project and he has been extremely helpful in making sure it comes together. I think i will have to challenge him in our next email conversation.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 15:02 (three years ago) link

And suggested in the responses to that Penny Rimbaud tweet, Jaz Coleman which I guess wouldn't be surprising given he's (amongst other things) a 9/11 Truther - as (he claims) persuaded by genius of Michael Meacher - ironic, given his 2020 project with Ondrej Smeykal was held up while Smeykal recovered from COVID.

Then again, "it's the pivot point where anti-authoritarianism meets excessive weed abuse."

Well *I* know who he is (aldo), Tuesday, 16 February 2021 15:08 (three years ago) link

Yes, I can't say I'm surprised about Penny Rimbaud. I saw him play at one of the worst gigs I've ever been to in my life so it's unlikely I'd have had to boycott any of his future engagements.

"so-called vaccines"

Yes, they are indeed so-called.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 16 February 2021 15:36 (three years ago) link

You see, taking Big Pharma to task for its inhumane profiteering is simply impossible if you don’t also reject the validity of medical research and incriminate the gays in the process, that’s just how it is. It wouldn’t be logically consistent otherwise!

Despairing snark aside, I have never seen anyone use the phrase ‘follow the money’ who didn’t turn out to be a massive antisemite. I’m not saying it’s systematically the case, but it happens a bit too often for comfort.

entirely useless trivia what i learned today: 'He appeared on the b-side to Vic Reeves and The Wonderstuff's UK 1991 number one hit "Dizzy", performing saxophone on "Oh, Mr Songwriter" (based around "Vic Reeves Big Night Out" TV show end theme song).[13] At one point during a sax solo, Vic can be heard shouting "Pack it in, Parker!".'
