"Not only was it always terrible, but Twitter and Instagram have substantially devalued the very concept of cool."

I hate the word influencer. Sickening.

It’s true. Coolness thrives on mystique, scarcity. Clout is the opposite and the two forms of social currency cannot coexist.

v hard to be cool while imploring your audience to subscribe to your channel and smash that like button before playing a song you're still working on

as long as the 'gram exists, twitter will be cool, at least in a relative sense

Had to go w/ 2015 because of indexing, "enhancing" the algorithm, and ditching the fleeting, dissolving character all together.

It's nice to go into a cave full of shrieking bats, but only for a few minutes.

flappy bird, Friday, 15 January 2021 18:34 (three years ago) link

cave full of shrieking bats is otm. it isn't always my twitter experience, but when it is, i know it's time for a break.

I love following people from Australia and England who are outside of our political context. Brexit talk is so soothing to me.

This is not cool?

2018: Deepfakes could seriously destabilise global politics in the coming years and we should be alert to the dangers of disinformation spreading at a faster rate than ever before.

who are the ppl being faked there?

shivers me timber (sic), Friday, 15 January 2021 20:11 (three years ago) link

i don’t get the shrieking bat cave thing anymore. at one pt i felt an obligation to stay on top of the discourse and follow a certain core set of highly central accounts in politics media twitter, but there’s actually no reason to do that. the side effect is im rarely more than tangentially aware of what the main character of the day is. like i only saw passing reference to the fact that other people were tweeting about something to do with a bean dad, i never saw anything g directly about it and still haven’t looked it up

i always thought that “hell site” was something that big accounts said because once u got to a certain level of followers u start to get the attention of nazis and your tweets gets RTd and dunked on by random communities, and then smaller accounts just started parroting it unthinkingly even though essentially no one interacts with them and they can perfectly customize their experience

flopson, Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:13 (three years ago) link

the thing is that people are just as hateful to one another in real life, and the attribution of it to twitter is 100% due to people not wanting to face that fact

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:21 (three years ago) link

ironically the "I'm not reading all that but I'm happy for you or sorry that happened" probably reflects the average person's amount of actual care for everyone else in his or her life, but because it's twitter it's twitter's fault

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:22 (three years ago) link

xp not, imo, a fact

spaghetti connemara (darraghmac), Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:25 (three years ago) link

im probably meaner to ppl on ilx than twitter, and irl i recoil in horror and lose sleep if i ever say anything even borderline misconstruable as impolite

flopson, Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:29 (three years ago) link

if you're mean to people online that still counts as being mean to people, sorry to inform you

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:36 (three years ago) link

not what was said tho

spaghetti connemara (darraghmac), Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:37 (three years ago) link

im meaner to ilxors irl fwiw

spaghetti connemara (darraghmac), Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:37 (three years ago) link

it's exactly what I said; people compartmentalize being mean online as not being mean, and then blame it on whatever online service it is

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:44 (three years ago) link

i usually regret being mean on ilx. usually i just don’t look at the thread for 2-3 days

flopson, Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:44 (three years ago) link

the thing is that people are just as hateful to one another in real life,

Not, imo, a fact, and exactly a quote of what was said

spaghetti connemara (darraghmac), Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:46 (three years ago) link

what I meant is that people do not become less hateful to one another just because the medium changes

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:48 (three years ago) link

i think that's fair enough but i do think the medium matters or changes things in ways which makes it very difficult to be sure about any big statements sometimes?

spaghetti connemara (darraghmac), Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:50 (three years ago) link

I think that's something that's probably open to serious challenge

xp

k3vin k., Saturday, 16 January 2021 23:50 (three years ago) link

xp may have read that wrong tbh

If its "people dont behave any differently" then ime thats not right

If its "the same behaviour is no different just because of the medium" then it's up for debate

like for instance today the Designated Wrong person was someone who said that Disney IPs were for children and people shouldn't like them. every other day the Designated Wrong person is people who watch Disney IPs. the only constant is hatred of people.

Even searching Twitter for Disney I have no idea what that refers to

I do see tweets like this and they're correct that the Aristocats are cool

Disney + has these super cute little mini docs. On one, a Pixar script supervisor is talking about how she noticed that their movies were heavily weighted towards more male characters, and male characters having more lines...

"the main character," whatever, but it is a thing that exists

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Sunday, 17 January 2021 03:02 (three years ago) link

the tweet I was referring to -- I don't agree with the rest of the thread, but "you are choosing to give a corporate entity your creative energy" is a sentiment expressed over and over during the "if you disliked that martin scorsese movie but like the marvel cinematic universe you are bad and wrong" cycle and accepted as the self-evidently correct take that if you disagreed with you deserve to be mocked forever. but now it's self-evidently incorrect

"Fanfic is collaborative" "it's about community" nah sorry it's all corporate IP. Ultimately, someone else legally owns it, and you are choosing to give a corporate entity your creative energy.
