Hoping that it ain't gonna be a standing thing throughout the year. Would be nice if public figures ceased to be quitie so attention seeking.
Would be nice to go through a period where there wasn't constant news or whatver passes for it. People believing the fake stuff leading to bad real stuff.

Would be so nice to not always be edging closer to the next great calamity.
Are things going o become peaceful any time soon?

they're both fucking bonkers, Qanon people who got elected, and they will likely be trying to get in the news as much as possible (a la trump) until they are evicted from their positions in congress by one method or another. then they're going to newsmax

Karl Malone, Thursday, 14 January 2021 17:12 (three years ago) link

it's pretty obvious Trump et al were trying for a weak, plausible-deniability coup which came frighteningly close to working since basically your work is done for you the moment you tell Capitol Police and the Guard "now let's play nice!"

Idk if I’d call it weak, it’s genuinely scary to think about if they had succeeded at getting close to AOC and other congress members. It seems like violent intent was obvious and that’s been backed up by all the subsequent reporting and from what I can tell the media rhetoric hasn’t matched the serious of what happened.

“Big” Don Abernathy, Sunday, 31 January 2021 23:52 (three years ago) link

not "weak" as in "lol ur attempted coup was weaksauce, bro", 'weak' as in "we're not going to come right out and say 'stand down and let the protesters do their thing', we're going to pretend to support them and condemn violence while weakening security so that our hopefully desired outcome occurs and we can say we have nothing to do with it".

the media has been reporting how much more serious than initially reported it was for weeks. nobody is saying it was nbd anymore because it wasn't.

How many more revelations like this will it take GOP senators to vote the decent way during teh impeachment. LIke is there a tipping point or are they infinitely callous.
Are office phonelines perpetually busy with people trying to instil some level of conscience in a vacuum.

Former President Donald Trump has finally found lawyers to represent him during his Senate impeachment trial: an ex-prosecutor who declined to charge Bill Cosby and an Alabama attorney with ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

Bruce Castor and David Schoen will be replacing no fewer than five other lawyers who split with Trump over strategy days before his trial for inciting the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

Trump reportedly wanted the previous lawyers to parrot his false claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him—the very accusation that led his supporters to carry out the deadly insurrection.

It’s not clear if the new lawyers plan to use that strategy.

he won't be convicted, but if anything could make it happen it's this defense. a constitutional/procedural argument allows the more priggish senators to ignore what happened (which is obviously good for the GOP and what they want to do).

trump's defense plan heightens the contradictions inside the GOP, guarantees even more media attention for the trial, and makes clear he's never going to stop. can easily imagine this being worth at least a couple of guilty votes.

I know we've moved on, but my take on the $2,000 stimulus is that, while the Democratic messaging around it was definitely ambiguous and/or not quite unified, a lot of people outraged about it seem to be using it to confirm their preexisting belief that Democratic leadership is hopelessly awful. It feels like it's become a symbol or a talking point rather than a good-faith debate about the details of the relief bill.

Whatever covid relief bill passes, it will be done with reconciliation and it will contain whatever provisions the most timid of the 50 Dem senators is willing to vote for. Presumably Biden and Schumer will provide as many threats and sweeteners as they can muster to get all 50 ducks in a row. This wooing of blue dog Senate Democrats will be the theme song of this Congress.

Compromise isn't a principle, it's a method (Aimless), Monday, 1 February 2021 03:59 (three years ago) link

Space Force budget is more or less on par with West Virginia's entire GDP, so Manchin would really be bringing in the space bucks.

Is Space Force still happening then? It wasn't shelved on the first day like the wall then? Labelled as trump's quixotic folly and punted into the closest bin.
Or used to denote the term trumpian as in utterly wasteful of govt budget and serving no practical purpose other than being something to laugh at, definitely not with.
Or are there brave new frontiers to fight on. While there's no great way to train for them. Maybe that secret base on the dark side of the moon to personnel?
I mean I assume there must have been a valid reason for starting a separate armed force beyond senility, right?

Stevolende, Monday, 1 February 2021 07:31 (three years ago) link

my understanding is that the space force is basically just a rebranding of air force programs that already existed. seems like it's more about satellites than warfare in space or anything like that.

But now, as the Biden administration settles in, some close allies of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are opening up about one of the longest-running dramas from the Trump era — the blitz of meetings, messages and public statements in Ukraine by former president Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani.
...

The new disclosures from Kyiv do not offer any bombshell revelations about Giuliani’s dealings. But they help fill in some blanks on his frantic — and unsuccessful — quest to press Ukraine to make statements seen as potentially helpful to the Trump reelection bid.
