yeah, i remember dark tweets a week or two ago suggesting there was a lot of unsettling stuff to come out from the insurgency at the Capitol, I wonder when it will surface?

Nothing is going to happen to any sitting member of congress. Several of them openly committed "insider" trading this time last year and nothing came of it (though one lost an election partially because of it).

I find it a little weird that she is being so vague about something so serious, especially given how angry she remains. If Cruz or someone else truly, directly put her life at risk, then why not say exactly how? Did he tell people where her office is? Did he tell people to go there? It's unclear to me why an ongoing investigation would prevent her from making a specific accusation. If he's a danger, or did something criminal, what is she waiting for?

I think she said in one of her streams she'd been advised/requested to keep information back for security reasons.

reading the tea leaves here I would guess that a sitting member of Congress did inform one of the attackers where her office was. 2 weeks ago there some chatter about who gave tours of the Capitol the day before the attack and I think it was implied that a Republican, who is probably under an active investigation right now, pointed out to some of them where exactly their targets could be found

I don't think this was Cruz, but he was spreading all the voter fraud BS and directly encouraging people to "stand up and fight"

Let's say that person is under investigation. How would accusing that person of doing such a thing affect the investigation? Is the worry it could scare off others (non congress) involved? Are they waiting for more communications between parties under investigation? I guess these things are all possible, it's just weird that AOC would say anything at all, more than once, but not say anything more than that.

i'm guessing the FBI told her to stay quiet while they're investigating members of Congress to not move the needle / embolden others to try again, but she's legit pissed off and had to slip something

Really? You are surprised that a sitting member of Congress would just ignore the legal/security advice given to her about an outstanding investigation for an event that didn't even happen a month ago and for which most people implicated are still walking free and openly intimidating her? I think what she's already said is brave enough as it is.

Yes, I am/was a little surprised, because as the live thing yesterday showed, her scary story lines up very much with similar scary stories I've read about that day (like, for example, Pressley revealing the panic buttons in her office had apparently been ripped out; any more details on that?). AOC and others should absolutely keep safe rooms, maps, escape routes and other security stuff secret, and she has, but she implied that fellow sitting members of congress were actively trying to get her killed. That doesn't seem like the sort of thing you just put out there, let alone something she would be advised was OK to say. I trust AOC, but maybe as adept as she is her inexperience is showing just a little; if there's an ongoing investigation, I'm not sure what's gained by cryptic tweets or livestreams. After all, Pelosi and others were and is directly threatened, too. Hell, Pence was directly threatened that day. The FBI seems to be doing a pretty good job tracking down everyone implicated, at least so far. AOC's outrage is absolutely justified, but if there's more that needs to be done right now than what is already being done I wish she would say what that should be.

I genuinely think AOC is torn between wanting to be as crystal clear and forthcoming as she usually is, but knowing there are just some elements she can't feel free to divulge just yet. Maybe it's because I generally like her and want her to stick around, but I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt that she knows what she's doing.

Possibly she knows what legal advice is, is weighing up the importance of the "trust the system" measured route of pelosi et al and sees the damage done already fading into business as usual and is making a conscious decision to reject it?

I'm sure detractors are going to frame her comments about the "belligerent Capitol cop" as mere undeserved projection, but she wasn't watching this on TV, she was living it in real time, so it's not as if the narrative of "why aren't the cops doing more??!!" or pics of cops taking selfies was influencing her perception.

not to mention, if you're a Capitol police officer entrusted with keeping the peace (lol yea right) and protecting the officials within, I would tend to think you wouldn't approach the door of a sitting Rep , not announce who you are or why you're there, bang on doors, and yell/scream angrily. so who knows whether they were just bad at their job, sympathetic to the QAnon folk, or secretly part of it. it's horrifying to know that the people who should be protecting you may not be on your side and that you have zero ability to ascertain that in real time.

The lesson AOC is demonstrating here: you have to have your own back, because sometimes nobody will speak up for you otherwise. What she has done is really fucking brave.

AOC has clearly made the calculated decision that speaking out prevents the issue from slipping into the background, that she personally recognises the threat to her and that she has a duty to speak out for when the next time happens (and there will be a next time). It would be great, I say from the UK where a female politician was murdered in the street by a fascist less than five years ago, if political violence wasn’t brushed aside or pretences made that those encouraging it are acting in the same sphere as those subject to it.

None of it seemed remotely cryptic to me, she was very clear in what she was saying and how she said it.

When kids do drills in school for a hard lockdown with a suspect *in* the building, that means you don't open that door for anyone no matter what they say, except the police, who will announce themselves as police *and* have their own key.

It doesn't seem unreasonable to hold the Capitol Police to a little bit higher standard, in terms of their ability to follow protocol & behave respectfully and responsibly in protecting high-status targets in a dangerous environment.

Because I wonder why you find AOC’s story so hard to believe, that you are expressing doubts all over it all over this thread rather than trusting that she might know what she is talking about and doing, and I think you should know exactly how this attitude comes across to women on ilx.

reading between the lines she definitely seems to be implying that certain members of Congress were helping the rioters or at least were giving them directions. I know there was a lot of talk about a certain member (Boebert?) giving tours to the people who raided the Capitol the next day.

She’s not the first person to say that either - James Clyburn said they went straight for his unmarked office.

I've only asked why she has edged really close to directly naming fellow congress people as conspirators but not done so yet if that is the case. Not doubting that there could be some congressional coconspirators, and for sure Boebert and MTG seem like good candidates. It just seems like getting them out of there ASAP would be a priority, and if there's not enough movement on that front I wish there were. Outright naming them would I think get the ball moving faster, but maybe not.
