The announcement said
It’s no secret that he had struggled on and off with drug abuse and a pretty chaotic lifestyle for a long while
so guessing yeah

This is the first time I saw the group, from The Beat at Reading in 1993, genuinely thought he was a girl and an attractive one too.

The voice should have tipped me off, but they'd previously had Babes In Toyland on, so

Been a long time since I thought about these guys but I liked this song when it came out, definite Pixies/Nirvana LQL action going on but the main guitar riff is great -

Also, Cass Nicholls is a monstrously busy and capable bass player, I can see how he came to the attention of The Who, he is exactly like an Alt-Rock version of Entwhistle.
The basslines for these two songs are absolutely nuts.

Freely admit when I first saw photos in MM I thought the same. Oh my callow youth.
Saw them open for Blur in May 1992 over here. Fun show and I had a long sleeve Pop Kid shirt for years after.

Saw Senseless Things while studying abroad in Canterbury, along with The Family Cat (genuinely impressed by the Cat, & love their records still), in the same week, & I truly believed the Replacements/SST bands I loved in the US of A were making a mark in the UK, but somehow Grebo & fake sounding Beatles amp ups ruined that wave. So sad Keds died at such a young age. Peace to his family & fans. Beach Slang's cover of 'Too Much Kissing' sucks & is not a patch on the original. Sad dipshit BS dude's abuse will get more press than this.

i have always assumed that the fact the senseless things lads went onto help out/join/form other bands across many genres proved a couple of things :
- they were a f*cking brilliant band, and knew their craft- through their gigging excess, they made friends with a lot of other bands, and were clearly loved by all those who met them i.e. they weren't twats.
personally, i came to them primarily cos of the Jamie H artwork (a relationship that lasted a very long time, hence Cass doing so much for Gorillaz - who even ended up writing the Gorillaz coffee table monstrosity 'The Rise Of the Ogre')
i first discovered senseless things via their debut cd ep on CBS, "Got It At The Delmar" i think, which was of course only 99p in week of release.i got it for the cover, and then realised just how much fun they were and so stayed for the ride.unfortunately due to my newfound settled adult life i only managed to see them the once (freebie Heineken thing in Roundhay Park), they were great fun.
r.i.p mark, and thanks for all the tunes-n-grins.

re Morgan Nicholls : "I can see how he came to the attention of The Who, he is exactly like an Alt-Rock version of Entwhistle."
pretty sure i read somewhere that his solo album, Organized, was recorded using an old hammond that belonged to the Who, pretty there is a family/friend connection.

yeah, there is a family/friend connection : Morgan Nicholls is the son of Billy Nicholls.

they toured a heck of a lot on the toilet circuit with people like snuff and perfect daze and milk.
not that anyone cares, but i think i meant the milk monitors. or sink.

I care, Nick :)
I never saw them, the reunion gig happened at a time in my life when there was no way I could go to it.
Since we are posting youtubes these 2 are my faves and haven't been posted:

i'll say one thing for The Word, they really knew how to get across the energy and excitement of a band. different genre, but same thing with 'Dance Energy' with Normski. possibly the same same production team? makes the likes of 'Later...' look so dull in comparison (not difficult i guess!)

amazing, always loved that track (think it was on a cover CD, we used to play it a lot) but never made the Senseless Things connection until this moment. Would love someone to do an oral history of that track, especially with his little brother, and Miss Parker herself of course.

I might have watched that Penguin Cafe interview and never made the connection.
Once travelled to Harlow to see Senseless Things at The Square on the full understanding that there was no getting back to London before the trains started again.
