Nice. Which one did you have?

pomenitul, Monday, 11 January 2021 19:57 (three years ago) link

I think I've tried most of the sours available. Brasserie Shelton alone has four or five different ones.

It all started with a can of « La Poudre jaune » (by Lagabière) on a very hot day last summer. Couldn't believe how much flavour it had for only 3.5% alcohol. I'm pretty much obsessed with trying them all now.

fields of salmon, Monday, 11 January 2021 20:02 (three years ago) link

I haven't had any since I moved back. As soon as Dry January ends, I'll give La Poudre jaune a shot – I'm generally a fan of Lagabière.

pomenitul, Monday, 11 January 2021 20:05 (three years ago) link

Everything Lagabière does is excellent.

On a considerably less jovial note, this confirms what you were saying the other day:

The sour I got the most mileage out of once I discovered them was the Hully Gully by Grand Bois. That's ultimately what a sûre houblonnée should taste like to me. Really well-balanced and with more kick than the 3.8% alcohol would suggest..

There's a watermelon and sea salt göse you can get at Peluso... I think it's Trèfle Noir? Holy hell on a hot day that's great too.

For a proper sûre houblonnée I recommend the Hully Gully by Grand Bois. It's probably the best gateway drug if I was trying to introduce someone to sours who is a fan of that Vermont kind of taste. It's got a bit of diesel fuel and freshly-mown lawn, but it's a sour all the way.

fields of salmon, Monday, 11 January 2021 21:51 (three years ago) link

I've only tried Grand Bois's Avant dimanche double IPA, which I absolutely love, so I'll be sure to give the Hully Gully a shot.

What winds me up the most about the curfew is that it's been issued by a suburban/exurban provincial government who, if I'm not wrong, elected no seats in Montreal.

Literally no understanding of the difference between Legault World and contemporary Montreal, which is a city of nighttimes and for which this will disproportionately have a net negative impact on all sorts of completely normal behaviour.

Dog whistle, maybe?

fields of salmon, Monday, 11 January 2021 21:59 (three years ago) link

Maybe I'm paranoid, but it seems fairly obvious to me that this government was elected in no small part to punish the 514 aka Fauxbec.

pomenitul, Monday, 11 January 2021 22:02 (three years ago) link

On top of everything there is bad batch of opioid circulating right now.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 11 January 2021 22:15 (three years ago) link

I’m not a fan of sour beers but if I ever get back to the MTL I am totally trying some of those suggestions

My favorites for sours:

- Dunham (Dunham)
- Harricanna (Montreal)
- Grand Bois (St-Casimir)
- Lagabière (St-Jean)
- À La Fut (St-Tite).

Noted, merci.

Mods, can we redub this thread 'rolling bière sûre 2021'?

pomenitul, Monday, 11 January 2021 22:22 (three years ago) link

Remember when there was just like DDC, Unibroue and Le Lièvre?

Van Horn Street, Monday, 11 January 2021 22:23 (three years ago) link

I've got a nostalgic soft spot for that era, but we've come a long way, no doubt about it. Average dep selection is on a whole other level these days.

pomenitul, Monday, 11 January 2021 22:26 (three years ago) link

im gonna keep an eye out for some of these next time i am picking up! i am lucky enough to live near an above average beer dep (not peluso level, but pretty good) and its maybe time for me to break out of my quar defaults which have mostly been like... cheap domestics and sometimes those archibald mix packs

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Tuesday, 12 January 2021 17:10 (three years ago) link

i went to the dep to get supplies, wandered to the beer and... realized i didn't bring my phone. oops! but for some reason they had rodenbach grand cru in stock???? so uhh it's not from quebec but thats what im currently enjoying! not sure ive ever seen it in mtl

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 00:35 (three years ago) link

Heh, there was even an article about it last year:

https://journalmetro.com/art-de-vivre/2384574/les-bieres-belges-de-rodenbach-debarquent-montreal/

Man, this thread is not helping with Dry January at all.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 13 January 2021 00:39 (three years ago) link

hah sorry! you're doing great you're halfway there. i'll try to save the other beer posts for all groundhog's eve

Has to be, if it was done in broad daylight.

Reminds me of a guy in La Fontaine Park, always muttering antisemitic garbage to himself, utterly oblivious to the world around him.

No idea if this is relevant here but it also brought to mind this piece from 2014:

It's all part of the globalists' geographically challenged plan to co-opt Quebec into the EU!

I did not expect to see an article about Aunt Dai in… The Guardian:

pomenitul, Friday, 15 January 2021 18:29 (three years ago) link

their website is amazing but tbrrwu i narrowly prefer cuisine szechuan on guy & sherbrooke

flopson, Saturday, 16 January 2021 08:22 (three years ago) link

in re Aunt Dai & truth in advertising, used to crack me up that on one street in Addis there was a place called Excellent Restaurant, a block further you'd reach Decent Restaurant

I was talking to Raphael as recently as Thursday. I'm still mourning and he dares say such a thing, I'm just so fuckin angry at him.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 19 January 2021 21:46 (three years ago) link

Absolutely heartbreaking. Note that this is the exact same argument deployed by these folks against allowing people of religious communities to wear whatever the fuck they want because "someone might some day pose as a bank robber and rob a bank dressed as a muslim."

Nowhere else is doing especially good right now, but there is a special type of infantile performance art exclusive to paleo-québécois groups like the QAC that really fucking wind me up.

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 20 January 2021 01:12 (three years ago) link

or sorry the CAQ

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 20 January 2021 01:14 (three years ago) link

CACK, let's just say it.

too many sour beers

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 20 January 2021 01:17 (three years ago) link

I had a nice lemon sour beer from Matera tonight. Legault is a fucking ghoul

rob, Wednesday, 20 January 2021 01:45 (three years ago) link

Homeless community now exempted of the curfew. Thank fuckin god.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 27 January 2021 01:37 (three years ago) link

Based Cour supérieure du Québec. You certainly can't count on the CAQ to do the right thing in this regard.
