Sad news about Mark. Still have my Pop Kid t-shirt. RIP

Had mine for years -- long-sleeved!

That's sad about Mark Keds, he couldn't have been particularly old. saw the senseless things a couple of times in the late 80s, still love 'too much kissing'

kites aren't fun (NickB), Monday, 11 January 2021 19:44 (three years ago) link

He was 50.

scampopo (suzy), Monday, 11 January 2021 19:46 (three years ago) link

Gutted about Mark Keds.

First time I saw the Senseless Things was when they supported the newly reunioned Buzzcocks. Tough spot, but they were both great.

No thread on ILM though...

Keds? Sounds like Covid related

Mark G, Monday, 11 January 2021 20:15 (three years ago) link

Well that's shit :(

Multi-instrumentalist - composer Howard Johnson. He made his recording debut with Bill Dixon, enjoyed a long association with the Band and Levon Helm, and also collaborated with Charles Mingus, Andrew Hill, Sam Rivers, and many, many others.

I was just listening to him on a Gato Barbieri record.

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 11 January 2021 20:33 (three years ago) link

RIP Howard.

Haha I really REALLY do believe this.

He’s angry about impeachment, people who have spoken to him say. But the reaction to the PGA decision was different order of magnitude.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 January 2021 20:55 (three years ago) link

Ultimately with impeachment he's all 'yeah yeah I'm about out, fuck it,' but the PGA was part of the next steps of scamming and now he's fucked there.

Loved this guy, never managed to see him. There’s a great interview with him I have reposted here a couple of times.

He was one of those ubiquitous session musicians who nonetheless managed to carve out a singular approach. And he was apparently well-known enough in the ‘80s to appear in this ad:

I have a ton of records Howard Johnson plays on (Mingus, Dixon, Hill, Rivers etc.) but honestly when I heard the news I immediately jumped to see if he was the tuba player who'd worked with Arthur Blythe on so many records. He was not; that was Bob Stewart, who's still alive.

Was going to say. Awful tribute here

Farewell with respect and admiration to Sir David Barclay who rescued a great newspaper, created many thousands of jobs across the UK and who believed passionately in the independence of this country and what it could achieve.

— Boris Johnson (@BorisJohnson) January 13, 2021

How “unexpected” is an 86 year old dying, though, really?

scampish inquisition (gyac), Wednesday, 13 January 2021 09:38 (three years ago) link

As I saw someone write on Twitter this morning, Barclay didn't believe in the UK enough to actually pay tax here
