it's easy to be cynical about places in nyc for a myriad of reasons but that ny mag feature really bummed me out

Really great photo of Bill.

I wish I didn't hate baseball so much, but he actually understood *why* I didn't like it: at the height of my fandom, the year after my beloved Phillies totally took a shit in the Series against the Blue Jays, that strike just tore my kid heart out. I was furious, and swore I'd never watch a baseball game again, and aside from a few moments where games were on in bars, I haven't. That he understood, even after pushing back a little, was really great, tbh. Most people think I'm nuts when I mention that kind of thing.

(I was legit a baseball fanatic up until that point).

donna rouge, Saturday, 9 January 2021 00:44 (three years ago) link

Silby, given that I was 9 going on 10, I mostly didn't give shit.

To be honest, I still think professional sports players are paid way too much, and don't pay attention to any professional sports. Waste of time.

But that's not in the spirit of this thread, so enough of it. Thanks for sharing that pic and that article, J0rdan

I miss Morbs.

xp

grumpy dissension is completely in the spirit of this thread tbf!

calzino, Saturday, 9 January 2021 01:15 (three years ago) link

I guess true. Morbz understood that those assholes ruined something I loved when I was a kid, and I couldn't let go of that betrayal.

(Imo ban all professional sports though)

Great pic! :) :)

Agree that everyone in pro sports is paid too much. I still like baseball and hockey.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 9 January 2021 19:00 (three years ago) link

see imo pro athletes are pretty much the only highly paid people who deserve it, they objectively are the best at what they do and peoples interest in that generates a ton of money, who else should get the money the business guys, i mean obvs ultimately i would support redistributing most of that wealth, but within our current system they the most justifiable rich people

lag∞n, Saturday, 9 January 2021 19:13 (three years ago) link

100%

Aside from pro sports being one of very few routes to wealth, status etc for a very large number of people from certain backgrounds and class

nob lacks, noirish (darraghmac), Saturday, 9 January 2021 19:17 (three years ago) link

Professional athletes are underpaid imo. Especially nfl players

Used to love when morbs would wander into ilh or the boxing thread

Um, this is a huge problem, not something to be cheered on? It might be possible that encouraging young, mostly Black men to ruin their bodies (and often their brains) for life to enrich a bunch of already rich white dudes because "it's the only way out of poverty" is the biggest indictment of sport as it relates to race and class in the US.

Pere Legume (the table is the table), Saturday, 9 January 2021 23:06 (three years ago) link

Yeah definitely i wouldnt romanticise it either, alternatives should be there that don't leave sports as an "only way out"

But i think youve to acknowledge that starting from where we are its not a wholly negative aspirational motivator

Paying junior athletes fairly and managing the safety nets and all that as given

Daz White (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 January 2021 13:53 (three years ago) link

Teaching kids to get their hustles on early builds strong adults and healthy society. It teaches meritocracy and doping skills to the youths, and so of course they should be paid.

It also weeds out the laggards who werent born in february or whatever that gladwell bullshit says, and it allows them to start assimilating to their slavery gig futures sooner.
