He's definitely had some rave-ier tracks -- Temple Sleeper, Rival Dealer, etc

"claustro" from 2019 is the closest predecessor to "chemz"
― ufo, Friday, 8 January 2021 19:02 (three years ago) link
It’s been almost 10 years since I last heard Untrue and my nostalgia got triggered hard. This does for me what Massive Attack’s Mezzanine does. Albums which I was obsessed about the year they came out and I very rarely come back to, but when I’m in the mood for them they outshine every music ever made.

wish I was feeling this more but like the last several Burial singles I find it a bit disappointing. "Space Cadet" better than "Dark Gesthsemane" though

I'm as massive a Burial stan as you will find and I am still not hearing what you all are hearing in these new tracks
Still here for it though, and for whatever's next

I don't know what to expect - different art style, new profile pic, sounds like it could be beatless?

Fake(?) leak already out there.
― Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Thursday, 16 December 2021 08:32 (two years ago) link
yeah after listening i did question if it's real because it's quite a shift even from previous ambient burial. but it's not totally out of character or anything or obviously fake, wouldn't really be surprised either way

someone says it's Asleep Country’s album Next Year’s Snow ?

no idea, I've not seen the leaked thing - https://nextyearssnow.bandcamp.com/album/100

what I found isn't that Asleep Country thing at least but it's quite atrocious - I hope it's real :D

I like it. I would almost prefer if it didn't have the voices, which are just a little too BURIAL for me, a bit jarring to start with and then become monotonous after a while. Haven't listened to that much Burial in recent years but I'm surprised he's still mining this very specific "foster care advert" aesthetic this far into his career, cos as nice as this is, it could be slices from Untrue but with the drums taken out.

definitely a sign of the times that this thread isn't at the of of the new answers page. In my day, a new Burial release was an event!
― Paul Ponzi, Friday, 7 January 2022 19:33 (two years ago) link
Ha. New Burial is just a cozy part of the holiday tradition now.
I like it too...obv it's not very 'memorable' in the way that Untrue is, but I like the Burial vocal chops combined with the Burial ambience. And I think there's more going on in the music than seems immediately apparent.
I don't know how much I'll return to it, but I hope I do.

― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 7 January 2022 19:49 (two years ago) link
Mostly collected here, the first half are the ambient ones, I prefer the bangers like Claustro and Street Halo, and still like Come Down to Us for long-form emo ambient Burial:

his peak was the run of Kindred, Truant/Rough Sleeper and Rival Dealer in 2012-13, with Rival Dealer being his absolute best, check out those first
― ufo, Friday, 7 January 2022 23:25 (two years ago) link
co-sign that, ufo.
(although i did really like 'claustro' and consider it among that lot of "his absolute best")

I've warmed up a bit to "Chemz" and "Dolphins," but I will go to my grave not understanding why Antidawn was not hailed as a major statement upon release. Even here, there didn't seem to be much enthusiasm for a record that is to me a really fascinating pivot from one of the most innovative artists of the past twenty years. Maybe everyone was secretly hoping for a return to form, ie just repeating Untrue but less good?
― Paul Ponzi, Friday, 12 August 2022 21:41 (one year ago) link
Antidawn is what my niece and nephew call my wife, but hey
― Mark G, Friday, 12 August 2022 21:45 (one year ago) link
untrue isn't even his peak though, kindred through to rival dealer is much much better
i don't think antidawn was that much of a pivot though, he'd been putting out similar ambient stuff occasionally for a while, going back to "subtemple" and "young death"/"nightmarket"
― ufo, Friday, 12 August 2022 21:49 (one year ago) link
That's true, but committing himself so completely to that vibe was rather unexpected, no? And I actually agree about Untrue, I just assume that's the consensus pick. The early singles will always be my favorite Burial shit, along with the self titled LP
― Paul Ponzi, Friday, 12 August 2022 21:53 (one year ago) link
from 2016 onwards his output has been kinda all over the place so going further with a style he'd already spent a while exploring wasn't really a big surprise, him putting out something album length was though
― ufo, Friday, 12 August 2022 22:04 (one year ago) link
Been hammering Rival Dealer recently - never not sent into a different world when the "saw myself crying" bit rolls in on "Come Down to Us"

― paolo, Sunday, 14 August 2022 09:51 (one year ago) link
Antidawn was a bit of a let down for me I gotta say. Committing himself to that vibe over an album length release was a bit of a surprise but it's not like it came completely from nowhere, as has already been pointed out.
