I've no doubt Man City fans consider him a ledge. But fans of other clubs thought it was a bit of a wheeze at the time, but it was a fail because as far as I know nobody calls it the bell end!

Free jazz pianist Bobby Few, who played with Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, David Murray, Frank Wright, Steve Lacy and many others. He also recorded as a leader. He was 85.

Very sad. His playing on those '70s Center Of The World records (and in the Alan Silva Orchestra in the '00s) is brilliant.

Never heard the '00s stuff but yeah, his work with Center of the World (and with Noah Howard) was amazing. He really carved out his own space, somewhere close to Don Pullen and Dave Burrell but still 100% his own.

Helen Jackson, last known surviving Civil War widow, 101. Itself a weird tale:

Jackson volunteered as a caregiver to Civil War veteran James Bolin when she was a young woman and he, a neighbor, was in his final years. He appreciated her help, but he couldn’t afford to pay her – so he offered to marry her so she would inherit his Civil War pension when he died. The two were wed in 1936, when she was 17 and he was 93. Jackson told few people of the marriage, not wanting to invite salacious gossip about the arrangement. She kept her name and continued living at her own home even after the marriage, though she still helped care for Bolin until his death in 1939.

This relationship possibly an inspiration for Gene Simmons' lyric to Goin' Blind by Kiss.

I remember reading about her last year because there used to be two surviving Civil War widows receiving government benefits, and one of em died.

Or, I guess, the other one died, and now they're both dead.

IIRC the last recipient of a civil war pension did die last year - Helen Jackson never claimed it in the end.

The woman who died last year was the daughter, not the widow, of a US Civil War veteran, who was able to claim a survivor's pension due to being institutionalized. This scenario apparently did not inspire any Kiss lyrics.

Yes! However it was with 7 Plus Seven and 21 Up that it turned into the grand project it became. I still think 21 Up is the best one by far.

I've loved them all, including the most recent one. I hope someone takes over for it.

RIP. I hope there's someone else on the Seven Up team that has built up relationships with the participants as if not I can't really see it continuing.

Just heard about Michael Apted. 28 Up was my entry point--hugely important to me at the time (still haven't caught up with 49 and beyond, I don't think--the latest got cancelled here just after the pandemic hit). Like Coal Miner's Daughter and Class Action a lot, too.

I was kind of lost when I saw 28 Up--I was 25 or thereabouts--and Neil's situation (at a low point in that film; he bounced back in the next couple) was sobering.

Nothing compares to a Question of Sport imo.

Th "Up" series is humbling and brilliant, and the last instalment was very powerful - mortality becoming a recurrent theme, as the subjects aged. The relationship between Apted and his "cast" grew more moving with time, as well. They probably should end the series now, but I'll be sorry if they do.

RIP William "Jesus" Jellett, aka Jesus the nude hippie festival dancer, age 72. Anyone who went to rock gigs in London (or festivals anywhere in the UK) in the 70s/80s knew who this guy was.

This is incredibly sad- this guy and his wife Heather found themselves become "variety streamers" on Twitch after branching out into other games beyond Tetris and their hundred-something viewer streams were very cozy little hang outs full of positivity. The two of them were clearly very much best friends beyond being husband and wife so I feel so devastated for her. They were on day 2 of a big move to Hawaii and were simply reading on the couch, then he got up to get something and collapsed and never regained consciousness. Heartbreaking.

Sandra Jaffe at 83 ( and her husband who died in 1987), took over Preservation Hall in New Orleans in 1961 and had jazz bands there ever since. The Hall was integrated under their management at a time when New Orleans was segregated.
