I'm sad Tanya Roberts has actually died now. She would have been an amazing interview subject.

Colin Bell aka ‘Nijinsky’.

It is with the deepest sadness and heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Manchester City legend Colin Bell.

Albert Roux, the more unassuming of the Roux brothers (and the one that didn't have an absolute bellend for a son).

Well *I* know who he is (aldo), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 11:02 (three years ago) link

I think he actually did? In that Michel Roux Jr. is his son, not his brother Michel's.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 11:53 (three years ago) link

Oh well there you go.

Pierre Chappuis, Swiss poet and critic, 90. RIP.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 13:56 (three years ago) link

remember when Man City had an online vote for whom to name a stand after and everyone voted for Colin Bell so it could be hilariously called "The Bell End".

calzino, Wednesday, 6 January 2021 15:00 (three years ago) link

tbf he actually was one of their best ever players - pre-Sheikh Mansour. Him and Shaun Goater.

Eggbreak Hotel (Tom D.), Wednesday, 6 January 2021 15:13 (three years ago) link

I've no doubt Man City fans consider him a ledge. But fans of other clubs thought it was a bit of a wheeze at the time, but it was a fail because as far as I know nobody calls it the bell end!

Like Yosser, a Mancunian who didn't *quite* nail the accent, but forgiven because they were all so good.

Free jazz pianist Bobby Few, who played with Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, David Murray, Frank Wright, Steve Lacy and many others. He also recorded as a leader. He was 85.

RIP Bobby F.

Eggbreak Hotel (Tom D.), Thursday, 7 January 2021 19:06 (three years ago) link

Very sad. His playing on those '70s Center Of The World records (and in the Alan Silva Orchestra in the '00s) is brilliant.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 7 January 2021 19:12 (three years ago) link

Never heard the '00s stuff but yeah, his work with Center of the World (and with Noah Howard) was amazing. He really carved out his own space, somewhere close to Don Pullen and Dave Burrell but still 100% his own.

Helen Jackson, last known surviving Civil War widow, 101. Itself a weird tale:

Jackson volunteered as a caregiver to Civil War veteran James Bolin when she was a young woman and he, a neighbor, was in his final years. He appreciated her help, but he couldn’t afford to pay her – so he offered to marry her so she would inherit his Civil War pension when he died. The two were wed in 1936, when she was 17 and he was 93. Jackson told few people of the marriage, not wanting to invite salacious gossip about the arrangement. She kept her name and continued living at her own home even after the marriage, though she still helped care for Bolin until his death in 1939.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 January 2021 23:44 (three years ago) link

This relationship possibly an inspiration for Gene Simmons' lyric to Goin' Blind by Kiss.

Wow

flappy bird, Friday, 8 January 2021 01:56 (three years ago) link

I remember reading about her last year because there used to be two surviving Civil War widows receiving government benefits, and one of em died.

Pere Legume (the table is the table), Friday, 8 January 2021 03:09 (three years ago) link

Or, I guess, the other one died, and now they're both dead.

Pere Legume (the table is the table), Friday, 8 January 2021 03:10 (three years ago) link

If I'm remembering correctly, one of them was neuroatypical

Pere Legume (the table is the table), Friday, 8 January 2021 03:10 (three years ago) link

Rather be an old man’s sweetheart than to be a young man’s fool.

Madchen, Friday, 8 January 2021 07:33 (three years ago) link

IIRC the last recipient of a civil war pension did die last year - Helen Jackson never claimed it in the end.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 8 January 2021 08:00 (three years ago) link

The woman who died last year was the daughter, not the widow, of a US Civil War veteran, who was able to claim a survivor's pension due to being institutionalized. This scenario apparently did not inspire any Kiss lyrics.

Yes! However it was with 7 Plus Seven and 21 Up that it turned into the grand project it became. I still think 21 Up is the best one by far.

Just heard about Michael Apted. 28 Up was my entry point--hugely important to me at the time (still haven't caught up with 49 and beyond, I don't think--the latest got cancelled here just after the pandemic hit). Like Coal Miner's Daughter and Class Action a lot, too.

i'm sympathetic to that viewpoint they're both underrated

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 9 January 2021 00:27 (three years ago) link

I was kind of lost when I saw 28 Up--I was 25 or thereabouts--and Neil's situation (at a low point in that film; he bounced back in the next couple) was sobering.
