First they came for the Bean Dads, etc.

I don't even want to get into this argument now, but you do realize that this edgelord bullshit "I can say racist and hateful things because I'm ironic, maaan" is completely indistinguishable from actual fucking racism and hate to anyone who doesn't engage with the 4,000 hours of content people like this dude pump out, right?

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 January 2021 16:13 (three years ago) link

I agree with you! Which is why I also think it's best that people don't perform that kind of edgelord nonsense on the internet in the first place (apologies if this wasn't clear in the first post). It can obviously do real harm. But I still find the mass reaction to the harm very unsettling. IDK. It's bad feelings all around.

american primitive stylophone (zchyrs), Monday, 4 January 2021 16:21 (three years ago) link

Got it, I'm just frustrated at watching people defend his awful tweets, esp those using the old "you don't get comedy" bullshit line.

I mean, I know they have a podcast, but about what?

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, January 4, 2021 11:00 AM (twenty-eight minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

Hosted by oldest brother, Justin McElroy, middle brother, Travis McElroy and “sweet baby brother,” Griffin McElroy, the show answers viewer questions, as well as some of the funnier queries on Yahoo Answers. The humor rarely comes at the cost of other people, and if listeners correct the brothers on something the brothers said that was wrong or potentially offensive, they are quick to learn and apologize.

would probably rather kill myself than listen to this

i know someone who was in his previous band (western state hurricanes) and in fact they all played together in 2019 or early last year to reissue their unfinished album. I dont' know details about him though and didn't ask, but my impression has always been that he was a slacker gen X dude who thought he was funny and wry, and those 'edgy' jokes don't land well (and never did). What's amazing is, considering how online he is, how he never had the foresight to think 'hey maybe this shit doesn't go over very well, maybe people aren't going to find it amusing'. This seems to happen a lot. I can't comprehend it.

akm, Monday, 4 January 2021 17:13 (three years ago) link

he just seems like one of those people that spent so much time in the podcast/comedy/indie rock/NPR cultural-industrial complex that it never occurred to him that he would ever be interacted with by people that didnt think he was smart and cool. clearly thought of himself as A Big Intellect in a way that didnt accord with his actual career fronting a boring indie band and being a guest judge on comedy podcasts or whatever. i'll be glad as younger gens continue to chew these useless guys up and spit them out

ACNewman briefly defended this guy yesterday morning implying it was a gag, I almost replied with

"My my my my slow descent
Into jokey racism it went..."

replacing them of course with members of this younger generation who never say or do anything offensive or stupid ever

bean solidarity

"Mr. Bean" star Rowan Atkinson has weighed in on "cancel culture": "It’s important that we’re exposed to a wide spectrum of opinion, but what we have now is the digital equivalent of the medieval mob roaming the streets looking for someone to burn." https://t.co/69Gls9IObZ

I mean as apologies go, it seems like a pretty good one.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 5 January 2021 15:29 (three years ago) link

I just came here to link that. That's a great piece, IMO she completely nailed it, and she makes exceptional observations at the end. The points she makes about restorative justice and retributive reactions is extremely valid as well; restorative justice is a big movement, the school district my kid is in has embraced it, and I think it can be useful, but how does that fit with this desire to cancel people immediately for unwise statements?

akm, Tuesday, 5 January 2021 15:32 (three years ago) link

It’s a well-written apology, but not entirely convincing. The bean story itself had read (skimmed) to me as a dumb, strained attempt at humor by a pompous, unfunny person – but I see how it may have been triggering to others and I he seems to have addressed that angle thoroughly.

As for the old tweets – maybe because I just saw a few screenshots without the larger context, I definitely didn’t perceive the satire. They were pretty hardcore. It’s clear he at least on some level relished deploying those tropes for reasons beyond “taking the slurs of the oppressors and flipping them” (whatever that means). Like Brad said, just saying certain things reveals your character. He sort of dances around this (“the words themselves have power”) but his insistence on his “good intent” seems to fall short of total honesty.

so did the kid not know how to use a can opener at age 9 or ... they didn't have cereal or frozen stuff ... this whole thing just seems stupid to begin with and the pile-on makes everyone look bad.

probably the thread title should be edited at this point to reflect that dude will gain more ilx attention as "bean dad" than for his band that I'd never heard of before someone commented on a thinkpiece someone else had shared that linked to an old website that lauded his band

there are three threads with bean dad discussion, let's not rename all of them after a handful of now-deleted tweets

Yeah, in the original story, he also stressed her difficulties with spatial skills and process visualization, that the cupboards were bare, and that he insisted no one would eat a bite until she figured out the can opener on her own. The version in the apology is very different. I could see the original being humorous if it had been clearly intended as fiction.
