Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Georgia Republican who has criticized pandemic precautions as restrictions on personal freedoms, was on the House floor without a mask, prompting staff to speak to her.

Greene, who has expressed support for QAnon conspiracy theories, also was seen taking photographs on the House floor without her mask. Last month, Pelosi strengthened the pandemic rules, requiring members to wear mask at all times in the chamber.

Greene’s defiance was in sharp contrast to the Senate, where Pence wore a mask and so did senators as they were sworn in. Pence congratulated them with elbow bumps after the oath-taking.

After the confrontation involving Greene unfolded, Brian P. Monahan, the attending physician of the Capitol, whose medical advice has been the foundation of the floor rules, appeared on the House floor to have a conversation with Rep. Rodney Davis (Ill.), the top Republican on the House Administration Committee, which oversees rules on that side of the Capitol, along with senior GOP staff. Monahan left the huddle, and now Davis is in a heated discussion with the staff.

One problem is that a president in office is nearly untouchable apart from impeachment, there's an entirely new Congress being sworn in today and this president has only a few weeks left in office. We are now the world's largest, wealthiest, best-armed banana republic.

that was always the flip-side of the "just wait until the election, when civilians can finally exert their power via the vote". the morphing, while the months passed by until the election. and now, the months after the election, waiting for the inauguration.

There’s an additional substantive point I want to draw your attention to. We know President Trump acts like a thug. This is almost a literal replay of the Zelensky phone call which got Trump impeached. But there’s something more. This is a private call. It’s not for public consumption. This isn’t about stoking grievances for 2024 or maintaining control over the post-presidency GOP. President Trump is clearly very intent on remaining in office past January 20th and desperate to do so. He doesn’t think this is a closed question. He’s willing to do anything to remain in office and he believes enough threats can get him there.

If someone tests positive, any subsequent death is ascribed to the virus.
