Tagaq had been one of my "Artists Who are Totally Your Thing 'On Paper' That You Nevertheless Do Not Like" or "Artists You Keep Trying To Get Into". I think the wall I kept hitting with was going for the same 2 or 3 videos on Youtube every time that happened to be in a similar vein. Liking the first one enough to keep going, then getting the impression that's all there is. Anyway I'm obsessed with Tanya Tagaq rn

former poster who infamously hated on The 1975 in a really annoying way, baiting their fans something rotten, then decided they were amazing and proceeded to love them in a possibly even more annoying way, now banned
dw though I'm not seriously comparing you to him lol

good luck on your tanya tagaq quest
Deflatormouse I highly, highly encourage you to see Tagaq live when the opportunity presents itself, she is one of the best live acts in the world
She gave this performance the night she won Polaris. I don't know if the video is as effective as "actually being there" was, but it was easily the single most arresting performance I've ever witnessed.

Yeah I've seen her three times and she was stellar each time.

We need to reserve the term "banger" or "slaps" solely for songs that are uptempo, with prominent drums and/or rhythm sections (as in, the sonics match the onomatopoeia). I feel misled when I read a review of a track, and it says "she just dropped another one that slaps", or "Bob Dylan's latest banger" and its a slow folky campfire-style tune with basically no percussion.

Lol fair enough
her Polaris acceptance was great, distinctly remember her leading off with 'fuck PETA' lol

Thank you fgti, that was the most beautiful performance I have ever seen and now I am crying in public

Glad you enjoyed it! The addition of the Element Choir (led by Christine Duncan) was incendiary

Her book is also rather good, I thought!

YES, the choir put it over the top for me. I'm down to check out more of their work for sure. xp
btw my use of "banger" above more or less in accordance with Prefecture's definition. That's what I meant.

She performed with the choir in Ottawa when touring Retribution - it was great!

wasn’t it the beta band themselves who really hated it?
― brimstead, Saturday, 2 January 2021 20:00 (three years ago) link
anyway, I agree, will
― brimstead, Saturday, 2 January 2021 20:06 (three years ago) link
It was, and it was a dumb move. EMI hated them for it, I gave it a cursory listen at the time.
Now, I love it.

I used to be colder on the second half but now I think the whole thing’s marvelous

I got the deluxe version with the extra disc that was "supposed to be" an extra at the time. Don't bother.

Obviously it's amazing. Not controversial at all. But nice
― imago, Saturday, 2 January 2021 20:57 (three years ago) link
huh maybe it was the band that was dissatisfied and loudest about itI felt like it got dunked on p hard on music nerd msg boards at the time
― Washington Generals D-League affiliate (will), Saturday, 2 January 2021 21:01 (three years ago) link
but yes it’s v good. tbh I’ve got time for pretty much everything they put out

― Washington Generals D-League affiliate (will), Saturday, 2 January 2021 21:18 (three years ago) link
I think the reviews were bad because the band said it was bad, so etc.
So, emi dropped their efforts at promotion...

Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about how there will never be a greater disconnect between Pet Sounds's deathless critical reputation and the honest-to-God nausea I experience whenever I hear it, barring a song or two.

― Wrong Screamed Barney (Neanderthal), Monday, 1 February 2021 16:03 (three years ago) link
I'm sorry, Neandy. :(
But it's the critically acclaimed album that I outright hate the most, in no small part because I've wasted too many hours trying to understanding what the fuss is all about, in vain. Beyond the pioneering studio wizardry, the songs themselves (and the vomitive lyrics) are just so drippingly cloying that it's aural waterboarding to me. 'God Only Knows' is a total classic, though.

I guess I missed it. Maybe I wouldn't be foaming at the mouth at the mere thought of it if I'd read some of these naysayers' screeds.

I like it but def wouldn't care if I never heard it again. The cult of Wilson's genius was p obnoxious in the late 90s/ early 00s. Whenever people reverently trotted out the "teenage symphony to God" line (about Smile but often applied to PS too ime), I was like "does that actually sound appealing to you?"
― rob, Monday, 1 February 2021 16:11 (three years ago) link
lol, exactly.
― pomenitul, Monday, 1 February 2021 16:12 (three years ago) link
I feel like (and I'm not talkin about pom's take here) the whole "Pet Sounds isn't REALLY THAT GREAT, it's OVERRATED" has become the du jour take that supplanted "Pet SOUNDs IS TEH BEST BEACH BOYS EVER" in the last few decades. Pom's is unique cos he's saying it outright sux. I can appreciate that boldness.
It's not really a thing here because the Beach Boys discussion on these boards is some of the finest I've seen on the interwebs, particularly Shakey's poll series for each album. but I am tired of being bombarded w/ "b-b-b-but did you know there are better albums than Pet Sounds" whenever I talk about that album in hipster company. I have all of their albs other than Holland and any of their 80s output, I don't need to be talked to like a n00b!
