Yes, there are relatives but it is ultra complicated and it seems nobody is able to agree on anything so it all sits perennially in limbo.

consensus feeling that wax trax reissue will be better than the infinite fog one? didn't see any mastering details and infinite fog's bandcamp page is almost impossible to read with dark text on a dark background.

akm, Thursday, 31 December 2020 23:01 (three years ago) link

I ordered the Infinite Fog one before I saw the Wax Trax reissue announcement so I hope the Infinite Fog one is legit in the sense that it, uh, arrives

three weeks pass...

Really into S&CS for a few months now. The alternate versions of "Futhur" and "Love's Secret Domain" blow me away every time. Could anyone recommend other stuff in this vein, not necessarily Coil-related?

manuel, Monday, 25 January 2021 22:30 (three years ago) link

I wish there was more music (by anyone) that sounded anything like Batwings.

Yowsa!

I'm honored to say that I have written the liner notes for the 30th anniversary re-release of Coil's "Love's Secret Domain" LP on WaxTrax! Records. Thanks to @beeradam and Stephen Thrower for assistance coordinating the interviews. Persistence is all.https://t.co/fp8VoWUcQt

My liner notes draw upon new interviews w Stephen Thrower, Annie "Anxiety" Bandez, Marc Almond, Billy McGee, Rose McDowall, Charles Hayward, Stephen Stapleton and more to shed more light upon the writing, recording & release of this uncannily prescient album.
RIP Geff & Sleazy

reading this thread and 'England's Hidden Reverse' makes me wonder where David Keenan went to

Dan S, Friday, 19 February 2021 02:53 (three years ago) link

thank you

Dan S, Friday, 19 February 2021 03:09 (three years ago) link

That Keenan interview is fantastic, thanks for posting it. Full of unexpected turns. William Bennett liking Lana del Ray? Didn't see that one coming.

Position Position, Friday, 19 February 2021 04:17 (three years ago) link

David Keenan writes novels now. 'This Is Memorial Device' might be of interest to readers of this thread. It's about a post-punk band in Scotland in the 80s and the various characters they hang about with. If I remember right it doesn't have all that much of a plot but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

paolo, Friday, 19 February 2021 08:49 (three years ago) link

Is England's Hidden Reverse worth getting by the way? It's out of print so I've seen it going for like £25+ online but it's my birthday soon so I might ask for it then.

paolo, Friday, 19 February 2021 08:51 (three years ago) link

It was always about £20-25 even new. Definitely worth reading. I loved This Is Memorial Device, less keen on the followup For The Good Times. haven't read the new one and i see a followup already coming: https://www.whiterabbitbooks.co.uk/contributor/david-keenan/

Yikes, I see even the Strange Attractor reprint is sold out now. The original edition on SAF is very rare. Anyway don't hesitate, fantastic book about that whole scene.

xp

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Friday, 19 February 2021 09:15 (three years ago) link

England's Hidden Reverse is essential IMO, and I absolutely hate Keenan's writing, style, and opinions on music. It's still essential.

Überschadenfreude (sleeve), Friday, 19 February 2021 15:51 (three years ago) link

They should put that as a quote on the cover.

paolo, Friday, 19 February 2021 16:45 (three years ago) link

I did add that book to my list but yeah it's not cheap at the moment

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Friday, 19 February 2021 16:46 (three years ago) link

I picked up a copy of Wreckers Of Civilisation at a car boot sale that was £1. I say, picked up - the seller then proceeded to surreptitiously check the price online and said they actually wouldn't be selling it.

Noel Emits, Friday, 19 February 2021 17:41 (three years ago) link

Was giving it my best "I suppose I'll give this a go for a £1" face as well.

Noel Emits, Friday, 19 February 2021 17:46 (three years ago) link

damn, so close. yeah I wish that wasn't OOP as well

Überschadenfreude (sleeve), Friday, 19 February 2021 18:01 (three years ago) link

Yikes, I just looked at Ebay prices, there's a pretty worn-out one with an asking price of £140

That Keenan interview on The Quietus is indeed great. I love the story about Haino's sweet tooth incapacitating him so bad he couldn't play.

and this:

Remember when being Bono was not cool? And now everyone wants to be fucking Bono!

lol

Oh and I couldn't resist pre-ordering that reissue of LSD despite the fact that I'd already pre-ordered the Infinite Fog reissue of same (which I guess we can now conclude is not 100% legit?). I suppose I can have fun in June comparing the two pressings like a nerd, which will undoubtedly hasten my descent into insufferable SHF-esque audiophile hell

Paul Ponzi, Sunday, 21 February 2021 00:35 (three years ago) link

I have some serious doubts about Infinite Fog tbh

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Tuesday, 23 February 2021 21:11 (three years ago) link

I wonder if I should cancel that order. It wasn't cheap!

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 21:18 (three years ago) link

I don't have any special knowledge, tbh, I'm only saying this since Coil bootlegs are rampant (I mean, I have mediocre LPs of LSD, Scatology and Horse Rotorvator and I KNOW those aren't legit) and out of kneejerk reaction to a label based in Russia- there's a lot of stupid Russophobia out there, sure, but it's also a territory where IP law is notoriously lax.

I mean, I'm browsing Sounds of the Universe now and they stock Infinite Fog releases? Who knows...

You guys are caterpillar (Telephone thing), Tuesday, 23 February 2021 22:41 (three years ago) link

Then again, after some poking around, they work with Danny Hyde and Stephen Stapleton, so

i think like many Coil releases the legitimacy of the licensing is debateable but they probably believe what they are doing is ok. It is a moral maze.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 23 February 2021 23:01 (three years ago) link

Speaking of moral illegitimacy, at long last there is a PDF of England’s Hidden Reverse on libgen.
It is now on my phone, I’m goin’ in!

Just saw that Strange Attractor Press are selling some old hardback stock of Englands Hidden Reverse for £50 and will be reprinting the paperback in 2022 so no need to pay crazy prices.

lol this thread inspired me to put my extra copy on ebay, ends tomorrow. hope no one else sees that.

Another LSD reissue here, not sure how it differs from the earlier one except that it's pic discs which they admit is "no audiophile format":

I got an update email from Infinite Fog that this is indeed just another version of their re-issue (insert shoulder shrug emoji)

Oblique Strategies, Monday, 8 March 2021 15:27 (three years ago) link

Reposting this from a Coil thread on another forum, regarding the waxtrax version. Response from someone involved in the LSD repress/remaster.

Ours (Wax Trax!) is remastered by Josh Bonati and is already up on streaming so you can hear just how fucking awesome it sounds. As for legit, we’re working with Stephen Thrower & Ossian Brown and Balance’s family, with input and insight by Annie Anxiety, Rose McDowall, Marc Almond, Charles Hayward, Steve Stapleton & Billy McGee and have received encouragement & materials from Thighps, Drew & others along the way. And we’re paying royalties to the artists or their families.

We are not using the same plant that Cocksure was pressed at

Don't know the bonafides of the infinite fog version but this version seems to be as legit as they can.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Monday, 8 March 2021 16:11 (three years ago) link

what is "Cocksure"?

Cocksure - https://www.discogs.com/Cocksure-TKO-Mindfuck/release/5791503

i've never heard it but maybe it is a notoriously bad pressing?

stirmonster, Monday, 8 March 2021 23:47 (three years ago) link

w the caveat i was just listening over streaming i thought the mix on the new wax trax remaster sounded amazing
