Guess it's a not uncommon nickname/stagename. Here's another one from Oz: https://scenestr.com.au/music/confidence-man-janet-planet-on-taking-the-world-by-storm

Wrong dude and wrong spelling but given how common this misspelling is I think I can get away with it. Also he's a guitarist.

Lol he has an album called "Funk in Hell" ... kind of surprised I've never seen that title used before.

Even better, an article about these dudes:

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 October 2021 20:34 (two years ago) link

The best way to describe this new band was a multi-talented hippie band.

The band’s set list consisted of original songs, good old time rockin’ covers and a Beatles set that was second to none.

To be fair, I can see Colin Newman doing this.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 October 2021 20:34 (two years ago) link

Wire was especially popular on the college circuit.

Totally them!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 October 2021 20:35 (two years ago) link

Looks like "Curtiss A" has a Wikipedia entry. Local legend?

(They should have stayed Bare Wire, that's a cool name)

He's 5 years younger than Bruce Gilbert.

... that's Wire's Bruce Gilbert, not this dude:

That one reminds me of this photo studio in my neighborhood that is very likely to cause double takes:

As a vocalist, Charles, along with Julia Rinker Miller, sang the theme song to the television series Three's Company.

Now there's a trivia question that you can not only get right, but also piss off the whole rest of the bar at the same time.

pplains, Monday, 22 November 2021 14:25 (two years ago) link

Just looked up the other vocalist. She was Mildred Bailey's niece, they shared the same middle name.

Sterl of the Quarter (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 22 November 2021 14:49 (two years ago) link

Or maiden name, of course.

Sterl of the Quarter (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 22 November 2021 14:51 (two years ago) link

Ray Charles (b. 1918) is especially unfortunate because according to Wiki he went by his birth name, Chuck Offenberg, until the 1950s when the other Ray Charles was already famous. Not sure why you would invite that confusion upon yourself!

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Monday, 22 November 2021 20:50 (two years ago) link

I was 99% sure when I came across his name that it was a typo for Ray Conniff.

Sterl of the Quarter (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 22 November 2021 20:56 (two years ago) link

To add to themy confusion, there seems to be an overlap between the Ray Conniff Singers and The Ron Hicklin Singers, including Ron Hicklin himself, although the Ray Charles Singers form a disjoint set, at least as far as I know right now.

Sterl of the Quarter (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 22 November 2021 21:08 (two years ago) link

And of course, Ron Dante functioned as a free agent, more or less.
