if it's a first-person shooter, you strafe

If you anticipate ever needing business casual clothing or formal officewear again, I've seen some pretty great deals out there. I bought a few new dress shirts from J. Crew - I got one of their Ludlow "premium" shirts for fucking $10 and it's an extremely nice color and pattern and feels and looks great, as well as a couple of their Thomas Mason shirts for $30 each (I've owned a bunch of these over the years and they're really good value even at a higher price).

hmmmmm yeah i'm sure it's a great time to get dress shoes too.

satanist of size (map), Tuesday, 19 January 2021 23:21 (three years ago) link

I walk past my closet and I can feel 20 years' worth of suits and ties and dress shirts just crying out from neglect. I saw one of my favorite ties on the floor the other day and I didn't even pick it up

zydecovid (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 19 January 2021 23:49 (three years ago) link

I still occasionally go to my office, although there are never more than two or three people there. The other night I gave myself a haircut and a good beard trim, and today I put on a button-down shirt with a sweater and derby shoes for the first time in months. Felt weirdly good, like I actually missed wearing office clothes.

I was thinking of getting one of those down jackets everyone wears with a voucher for John Lewis I won through work. Heard that Rab do good ones but online reviews made out that they lost their stuffing easily,so not sure?

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Wednesday, 20 January 2021 00:16 (three years ago) link

Oh nice thanks

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Wednesday, 20 January 2021 00:31 (three years ago) link

i've had a rab as my main winter coat for like 5 years, it is warm as fuck, too warm on the subway tbh. the hood is weird and geared toward mountain climbing types. aside from that i like it.

Most banner ads and Instagram/Facebook sponsored posts I see are for fancy sweaters (from No Man Walks Alone et al), and I'm pretty happy with that.

When it comes to sunglasses, I'm extremely conservative and narrow. They basically can't veer more than about 4% from the classic Wayfarer shape, or I'm out. I don't think I'm like this with any other clothing or accessory. Plus it's a kind of yuppie staple and I generally try to avoid that vibe. Anyone else like this? Is this okay?

cerebral halsey (rip van wanko), Saturday, 10 April 2021 02:55 (three years ago) link

i think that's fine. there are a lot of tryhard sunglasses out there. it's a utilitarian item at the end of the day and if you don't want to be making a statement it's totally ok to have something that looks nice and is innocuous.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 10 April 2021 03:10 (three years ago) link

Wayfarers are kind of a miracle of style imo, they always manage to look relatively fresh somehow.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Saturday, 10 April 2021 03:29 (three years ago) link

Also if you want to look less basic you can always just go for one of the more exotic colors

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Saturday, 10 April 2021 03:31 (three years ago) link

Yeah I think I'd consider that shape in a wacky color. Can't say I've seen many though.

cerebral halsey (rip van wanko), Saturday, 10 April 2021 03:46 (three years ago) link

who is making a nice soft cotton t-shirt that is good quality and at a price where i can buy a bunch of them?

i like heather gray but other colors are also fine.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 22 April 2021 02:52 (two years ago) link

Gildan makes good t-shirts. You can find multipacks on eBay for a good price usually.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 22 April 2021 07:10 (two years ago) link

Zara used to do these super slim white t shirts which I love because they’re form-fitting and work really well as undershirts if I just want that flash of white around my collar. Wouldn’t wear one on it’s own though. They don’t seem to do them any more and all mine are worn out

Having thoughts on getting baggier pants - all of mine are in the slim realm. I'm hesitant because I'm kinda tall and lanky and don't wanna be walking around with some sails billowing in the wind. I think it looks good for more normal/thicker body types.

Anyone gone baggier in the past few years?

SA, Thursday, 22 April 2021 13:55 (two years ago) link

Yeah I've got some light tan/beige Levi canvas pants that are pretty baggy and skatey in a way. Kind of remind me of 90s combat trousers except cut quite nicely and no side pockets. They only go with certain clothes but I kind of like them

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Thursday, 22 April 2021 15:47 (two years ago) link

I've been looking for exactly the right kind of boring short sleeved shirt that I can match with them and wear a khaki Adidas top over. It's the kind of shirt you see in charity shops everywhere. And yet I just can't find quite the right one

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Thursday, 22 April 2021 15:49 (two years ago) link

i went "baggier" a few years ago by switching to straight-leg, which felt like bell-bottoms after a decade of slim-leg jeans. the key for me was getting the proper length so there was no cuff and no break at the shoe

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Thursday, 22 April 2021 16:44 (two years ago) link

i generally wear wider legged pants nowadays, wouldn't go so far as to say baggie but like regular/straight cut jeans, dickies 874s.

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 22 April 2021 17:38 (two years ago) link

i am lanky. i don't mind how they look, and it's more au courant than skinny jeans

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 22 April 2021 17:40 (two years ago) link

Good to know. I think I gotta just commit. And yes, I mean regular/straight and not JNCO, although the thought is tempting for a laugh.

On a similar tip - are you all wearing less jeans? I'm feeling the urge to get baggier and denim-less. Are jeans out? What happened? And does JNCO offer baggy pants that are not jeans? Hope so.

SA, Thursday, 22 April 2021 17:54 (two years ago) link

I’ve worn almost nothing but two different pairs of 512s for the past 8 months. After a couple of years of almost never wearing jeans.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 22 April 2021 18:04 (two years ago) link

Damn - slim-fit tapered. We might be heading in opposite directions. Maybe I'm two years behind the curve. For non-work life I've been 501CT for the past few years. Weirdly some of them are sorta loose like more of a 501 and some seem kinda slim after heavy use. I guess they are not exactly the same off the rack and some shrink in the wash eventually and some don't. That's life.

SA, Thursday, 22 April 2021 18:14 (two years ago) link

the thing is i’m freakishly skinny so 512s kinda work on me. i doubt i’ll ever wear relaxed fit or flared jeans. i’d look like a mast.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 22 April 2021 18:20 (two years ago) link

oh yeah, i forgot my important fashion update:

got a pair of these

shoes with holes in them were such a weird yet deeply logical innovation

lag∞n, Friday, 23 April 2021 02:29 (two years ago) link

I wanted a pair of wayfarers for a long time but they always look terrible on me. Plus there's too many things you can't pair them with without looking like you're going to an 80's night or dressing as a Blues Brother for Halloween.

The challenge with "classic" sunglasses IMO is finding something that doesn't look too alpha douchebag. I need something more gender-neutral.

I have an interview/meeting coming up where it would be a good idea to look like I'm doing well for myself, so i read several variations on "how to dress rich without spending a fortune" today. Made me feel totally clueless/oblivious, never realized my clothes were making the opposite statement, i really don't think i can pull this off. They're like, "wear a watch!! Watches always look ugly/baroque!!!" I might have uh, a dead freestyle shark with the velcro strap somewhere.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Friday, 23 April 2021 05:18 (two years ago) link

Mostly out of denim over the covid year - I've basically just worn 4 pairs of trousers - green combats, green fatigues, navy combats, navy fatigues, all from sauce zhan on Aliexpress. Good fabric.

But since getting a pup I've just gone for the combats. Need the extra pockets for poo bags, treats, ball, storing random things pulled from his mouth.

Office casual dress in the 2000s meant a transition from boxy business suits which were comfortable to wear all day to slimmer suits more tailored for social events and special occasions. Now we're transitioning to a permanent working-from-home situation, I'm waiting on the arrival of the "business pyjama"

Urbandn hope all ye who enter here (dog latin), Friday, 23 April 2021 14:13 (two years ago) link

Dog Latin, that is a really interesting insight!

Under most normal working circumstances, I have never been uncomfortable in a dress shirt, tie, sportcoat, or suit. If they're good clothes and they fit, you should be able to wear them without feeling constricted. Like, my thing has always been that if a shirt is uncomfortable, it's the wrong size.

However, I never got round to adopting the skimpy 00s suit styles. So I didn't experience what those clothes felt like to wear for extended periods of time.

jeans are too stiff and heavy who can bear to wear such hard pants in this day and age

lag∞n, Friday, 23 April 2021 14:39 (two years ago) link

Was jeans-only for so many years before taking a hard turn into Gramicci and Nike ACG only and my legs couldn’t be happier tbh

crisp, Friday, 23 April 2021 14:46 (two years ago) link

I've been eyeing some Nike SB pants that are elastic waist. Aside from swim trunks, running shorts, and pajama pants, I don't think I've worn something with an elastic waist as an adult.

my neighbor is a regional sales person for a large NE based brewing company who makes a brand of hard selzer; she had dozens of boxes on her porch a few weeks ago and we made a joke about wtf she was buying from amazon and she revealed that she had boxes and boxes of truly branded 'couch couture' athlesiure wear:

now my whole family has ridiculous colorful gradient sweatsuits and they are kind of amazing

joygoat, Friday, 23 April 2021 18:00 (two years ago) link

i should note that for 95% of the past year I've worn levis, a black t-shirt, and a black hoodie so wearing a red-to-purple sweatsuit around feels extremely jarring
