She reminds me a little too much of annoying girls I knew in college.

John Ensign’s parents dished 96 grand to his girl friend and her family. Yes, that’s a real news story. But how big a news story should it be? Consider three separate news judgments:

Washington Post: In this morning’s Post, it gets 576 words, a banner headline across the top of page A6 and a small photo. (“Ensign’s Parents Made Payments to Mistress, Her Family.” Click here.)

New York Times: In this morning’s Times, it gets 448 words at the bottom of page A15. (“Senator’s Parents Gave Mistress Thousands.” Click here.)

That’s how it played in the Post and the Times.

And on last night’s Rachel Maddow Show, it swallowed the whole first half-hour. The previous evening, Rachel read Ensign’s love letter aloud.

Taking just a small step back, this helps explain why you (probably) won’t get real health reform this year. This helps explain why corporate interests will be happy -- again -- with this year's outcome.

Rachel Maddow reminds me of pretty much everybody I went to college with, sans the men and actresses.

At 8 PM, 3.3 million watched O’Reilly’s live broadcast. At that same hour, 1.3 million watched Harris-Lacewell [on the Maddow Show] evaluate Jenny Sanford’s moves--and discuss why she herself is able to endorse her own current love interest.

Do those numbers help explain why Maddow talked sexy-time sex all last night? We don’t know, but one thing is clear:

You’ll hear about health care reform on her program as soon as some big Republican player gets involved in a sex scandal. Chuck Grassley! Please! Get it on!

Maddow's up against Hannity, so what's the point of comparing her show to O'Reilly's wrt ratings?

Woops sorry I screwed up that quote. He was comparing O Riles and Olbermann, not Maddow. He is a bit confusing in that graf and my interjection completed the misdirection.

On Wednesday night, as Maddow talked sex, 2.5 million were watching Sean Hannity--and 1.1 million were watching her.

Can't decide what I think of Daily Howler's criticisms from the left of Maddow. He used to be just obsessed with blaming all the media for not teling the truth about Al Gore, and now he's obsessed with saying that left-leaning folks like Maddow (and Slate.com's legal news analyst) are as sloppy with the facts as Hannity. Sometimes I think he loses sight of the big picture, other times he seems on target.

Ha - dudes it's his job to say these things. His site's called "The Daily Howler". But it's true that there's a different edge to what he's saying now about Maddow (and Olbermann) - it's not so much that she bungles facts but that she leans on gossip and scandal instead of reporting news that matters to people's lives. I think it's a good criticism.

i'm so glad rachel is talking about this stuff as thoroughly as she is because i get the sense that most americans have no idea about astroturfing and view such fake-movements uncritically. i think a lot of people want to be involved politically but they don't think to dig deeper into the organizations behind the flyers they read; they just go "yeah! boy, that's for me!" and fall headfirst into the traps the astroturfers set for naive yokels like that. i want people to be angrier.

It occurs to me that Rachel Maddow and Ana Marie Cox would be the most adorable couple in the entire history of canoodling.

Ana Marie liked and respected Keith. Clearly the man wasn’t afraid to say anything, but she was also just as happy that most of her MSNBC bookings were with Rachel, rather than the high-testosterone environment of Countdown. To be honest, there were times during the campaign when she’d thought that some of Keith’s shots at McCain were low blows. Never inaccurate; just a shade crueler than absolutely necessary.

Keith must have had at least one cocktail too many, because Ana Marie was absolutely positive that that he’d actually leered at her when he said, “I can’t wait to see you on Rachel next week. You guys are really hot together,” which left Ana Marie with an unusual case of stunned silence until Keith lurched off in the direction of Politico.com table.

She’d been able to shake it off and get on with her night of hard-core schmoozing, but now she had to deal with the facts.

It wasn’t like she was the only one with a crush on Rachel Maddow, she thought, gingerly stepping into the Jacuzzi. The condition appeared to be nearly universal, and if the stuff she read on-line was any indication, Keith was the last rather than the first to make note of their onscreen chemistry.

Even Chris would joke about her “having a date with her girlfriend” when she was booked on Rachel’s show. He’d told her that the “tea-bagging” segments were pretty much the filthiest thing he’d seen on television, not that he minded. He thought they’d do better to give Ana Marie and Rachel an hour every day to talk in obscene euphemisms, instead of letting Matthews imperil the public’s hearing every day. Or maybe as a replace for what he called “Morning Schmo.”

So why did Olbermann making a slightly rude comment bother her so much?

Because now, when she angled herself against one of the jets, letting it stimulate her, as she imagined Rachel's hand in the same place, she couldn’t help seeing Keith as well, taking in the action with great interest.

This was wrong. So wrong. And so very hot.

We're all going to hell.
