ILM's 2020 End of Year Tracks & Albums Poll / NOMINATIONS THREAD

In some years there has been a Youtube playlist as well as a Spotify - it's a lot of work to do even one playlist so it kind of only happens if someone volunteers. (volunteers welcome)

Why Spotify in the first place? has come up before (lex always complained iirc), there was never a clear consensus for another option and it happens to be what the people running the polls have tended to use.

Sorry, I didn't mean to complain about the hard work you've done compiling these lists, of course it's appreciated. I was just wondering if there's some conscious choice in preferring Spotify, which, to me at least, seems less convenient than Youtube.

Tuomas, Thursday, 24 December 2020 12:55 (three years ago) link

But of course I understand that compiling them in Spotify is easier if you're using it anyway.

Tuomas, Thursday, 24 December 2020 12:56 (three years ago) link

Spotify much more convenient for me - easy to listen to the tracks playlists in the house via various Alexa speakers, in the car via phone, in work etc

groovypanda, Thursday, 24 December 2020 12:58 (three years ago) link

YouTube playlist would surely come with annoying ads for everyone and there's a big of a cognitive blocker with YouTube as most think of it a visual-led platform. If they'd allowed audio-only clips on it years ago they'd probably be able to compete more with Spotify as an audio-first platform.

nashwan, Thursday, 24 December 2020 13:11 (three years ago) link

Youtube ads are all blocked if you use a browser that has an adblocker. I don't think it works for Spotify ads tho... Personally, I find Spotify ads more irritating than YT ones, because at least in here it's the same 2 or 3 ads that keep repeating again and again.

Tuomas, Thursday, 24 December 2020 15:53 (three years ago) link

are bandcamp playlists a thing? would they be a viable option?

kites aren't fun (NickB), Thursday, 24 December 2020 15:56 (three years ago) link

I don't think Bandcamp allows you to compile playlists. Their streaming functionalities are pretty limited.

Tuomas, Thursday, 24 December 2020 15:58 (three years ago) link

No, no bandcamp playlists. I think it'd be tough for them to square something like that with their pro paying-the-artist stance. As it stands you (the artist) choose what's streamable for free and how many times, so if they went more "streaming forward" it wouldn't really be compatible. It would be cool to have something like a list-making facility, though, so I could compile "best synth-punk" links or something along those lines.

NOT NOMINATIONS ALERT

I am listening through to as many of the track nominations as I can until voting, organized alphabetically by song name. Lots of good stuff but here's the key new discoveries I'm loving; bolded tracks are being considered for ballot inclusion

  • 10K - Obongjayar (stompin')
  • 12 Problems - Rapsody (missed this coming out, great track!)
  • 150 - Porij (does the rest of their music sound like this? feels like it's in the Rhye/Bibio camp which is up my alley)
  • 4 American Dollars - US Girls (first thing I've heard from her that won me over)
  • 8 Melodies - Arthur (messy and nerdy)
  • Ain't Nice - Viagra Boys (this is an anthem! might make my ballot!)
  • Aktivated - Sada Baby (very effective sample)
  • April Fools Day and Bugged - CS+ Kreme (i need to check this album out)
  • Avaa hiukset, Medusa - Tienhaara (i'm always a sucker for folks playing in the diamanda galas kiddie pool)
  • Avalanche - Aimee Mann (dang, so good)
  • Back to It - Josie Dunne (total Meghan Trainor novelty vibes and yet this is really enjoyable)
  • Bad Boy Tenor - Kiko Bun (never heard of this guy, very nice)
  • Best Of - Hyroglifics (twitchy twitchy)
  • Betty - Pa Salieu (i think i tried this once before some time ago but damn it landed now)
  • Black Dog - Arlo Park (i think i heard 'Eugene' earlier this year and liked the sadgirl vibe; this follows suit)
  • Body Bag - Ivorian Doll (slaps)
  • Boris Johnson is a Fucking Cunt - The Kunts (does what it says on the label and doesn't overstay its welcome)
  • Boss Trick - Real Lies (i've been obsessively replaying this and am more than a little embarrassed how much this got me in the >*f33lz*<)
  • Box in My Head - Blue Oyster Cult (lol, very fun)
  • Brand New Drop (Thys Remix) - Addison Groove (my beat, she is broken)

yeah, i love real lies. weird to see that video again. it's just a guy in a room by himself watching old videos of people dancing and singing about it all in the past tense like it was a whole lost world. came out in february, how weirdly prescient!

forks, I've been wondering if you liked the Pa Salieu album, seems like it would up your street! And yes the CS + Kreme album is absolutely worth checking out

rob, Monday, 28 December 2020 01:12 (three years ago) link

I will definitely dig into both Pa Salieu and CS+Kreme once i've put in a week or two on the nominations. "Betty" is a real assured prowl; I would've assumed he was an artist who'd been putting in work for a long time and who i just found.

just watched the "real lies" video; it does feel very immediate doesn't it...
