There Is Nothing Left to Lose is fantastic and I want Paramore to cover it front to back.

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 December 2020 00:18 (three years ago) link

Saw the Foo Fighters at the end of their debut album tour cycle, with Ween and Jawbreaker opening — quite a mid-90s combo. I’d been lucky enough to see Nirvana so it was an interesting compare/contrast. Also Dave still looked like his Nirvana self, the haircut and facial hair soon followed.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 24 December 2020 00:49 (three years ago) link

don’t like the foos except I love “big me”

brimstead, Thursday, 24 December 2020 00:57 (three years ago) link

that song/video + Shannon hoon at Woodstock 94 represent some kind of end point of u.s. alternative nation or something

brimstead, Thursday, 24 December 2020 01:01 (three years ago) link

Big Me is a decent Teenage Fanclub impersonation

PaulTMA, Thursday, 24 December 2020 01:08 (three years ago) link

I was interning @ CMJ when their first single (“This Is a Call”) came in from the label... I remember the editors huddling around and playing it loudly, discussing the lyrics, etc.

Qui-Gon's Noble End (morrisp), Thursday, 24 December 2020 01:13 (three years ago) link

i’ve been learning to play “this is a call” on the drums and it is... so fun

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 December 2020 01:24 (three years ago) link

first time I heard it was the MIDI version which I still think is better than the actual tune

frogbs, Thursday, 24 December 2020 01:25 (three years ago) link

I guess the “standard tuning” tweet is clever

I didn't get this one. Was there some kind of move towards alternate tunings among popular rock bands in the early 00s? I didn't notice.

drop D i think

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 24 December 2020 01:34 (three years ago) link

that would be late 90s though

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 24 December 2020 01:36 (three years ago) link

that tweet made me think of how the goo goo dolls wrote a lot of songs in alt tunings

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 December 2020 01:37 (three years ago) link

Iris is also late 90s

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 24 December 2020 01:40 (three years ago) link

Name was in a ridiculous tuning!

Looking for Cape Penis house (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 December 2020 02:07 (three years ago) link

i think the tweet was a reference to nu metal bands that played 7-string guitars in drop tunings

call all destroyer, Thursday, 24 December 2020 02:08 (three years ago) link

Days of the New - Touch, Peel, and Stand is the sound I imagine

Nu-metal laughs at your puny Drop D

Drop D made a lotta burned out JNCO wearers think they could play guitar for a minute

Looking for Cape Penis house (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 December 2020 03:19 (three years ago) link

didn't goo goo dolls like using weird tunings in their songs too (not that they persisted much longer than eve 6 in the zeitgeist tbh)

anyway please block this guy's account and stop checking up on it

lol at him needing to openly mock his own band's sole significant hit (which is admittedly deserving of mockery) to get a few likes on twitter. if all goes well perhaps it'll help them secure a slot on a nostalgia tour with fastball and cake

dyl, Thursday, 24 December 2020 03:37 (three years ago) link

i honestly had no idea who these guys were before this week

Googled "heart in a blender song", expecting it to be like, "Oh yeahhh, this". Nope.

I knew the name but I'm pretty sure I'd never heard this band until now.

Adoration of the Mogwai (Deflatormouse), Thursday, 24 December 2020 03:45 (three years ago) link

I agree dyl. It’s all kind of depressing.

treeship., Thursday, 24 December 2020 03:53 (three years ago) link

Yes, with everything going on rn, people gawking at Eve 6 shitposts is the depressing thing

Looking for Cape Penis house (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 December 2020 04:04 (three years ago) link

Oh, I was thinking of stuff like Strokes/White Stripes/Killers. Nu metal bands used extra strings and drop tunings, yeah.

I linked the tweet on the sincerity thread (after listening) but this was true for me too.

i'm too lazy to look up the Nickelback thread but this kinda fits here better anyway (in terms of things I hate that keep showing up on my tl)

Eve's Plum > Eve 6

Yeah I don’t recognize the Heart in a Blender song either, but It sounds like something I would have heard if I ducked into a mall CD store after purchasing advanced Phantom Menace tickets.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Thursday, 24 December 2020 13:02 (three years ago) link

i had to look up the song. i know it as the "FAITH IN NOTHING" song. That bit goes way harder. wtf this brain stuff

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 24 December 2020 13:14 (three years ago) link

*heart stuff. i can't even remember that line now!

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 24 December 2020 13:15 (three years ago) link

feel like some people know it as the

*heart in a blender song
*the 'beautiful oblivion' song
*the 'rendezvous then I'm through with you' song
*the 'terrible' song

Looking for Cape Penis house (Neanderthal), Thursday, 24 December 2020 13:16 (three years ago) link

It’s not that terrible. As a kid I liked it because it had the word “rendezvous” and a few other long words.

you must have *loved* Bad Religion

just treated myself to "Noel! Noel!" on A Very Special Christmas 5. There are many "Brrrrrap!"s and a bridge where he sings "I like christmas" a bunch.

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 24 December 2020 16:43 (three years ago) link

I like every single one of those "oh that song" songs from that era -- heart in a blender, you're the one i want to take me home, doot doot doot, doot duh doot doot, all of them

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 24 December 2020 17:01 (three years ago) link

I loooved this one, used to sing it robustly (tho it’s a slightly later era than those mentioned above):

lifehouse were def a hangover of this era with added vedderisms

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 December 2020 17:37 (three years ago) link

(the lifehouse song i love is "spin," i even like the record it comes from)

I mean this is basically the era of "Songs that would occupy Mix CDs made by Teenaged Me, because I wasn't going to actually bother and purchase the entire album for one good song, and I was desperately trying to get into popular music but had no interest in Boy Bands, Rap, or Nu Metal". And over the span of several CDs, I ended up having FOUR separate Eve 6 songs on them!

MarkoP, Thursday, 24 December 2020 19:01 (three years ago) link

This week I learned that Light in the Attic sells colored vinyl reissues of a bunch of albums from this era, including Eve 6
