my cousin's graduation song was "bittersweet symphony" which i thought was actually a great choice. my mom enjoyed it so much she became a verve fan
i went to a weird dual-credit high school program at a community college and can't remember what graduation song we decided on but i do remember us walking out to the indiana jones theme
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 23 December 2020 17:33 (three years ago) link
imo you should get to choose your own graduation song, wrestler-style

given my listening habits at the time I'd have probably gone with Big Boi's "Last Call"

I don't think we had one. They play these at the actual ceremony(?)

mine was “at the beginning” by donna lewis and richard marx from don bluth’s anastasia and they don’t just play them; in my case at least the entire senior class had to rehearse singing it. not too rigorously tho.

excuse me can we circle back to this, the song about heroin overdose was your graduation song

I don't suspect anybody on the committee knew anything about the song other than its title.

so he keeps clowning on third eye blind, vertical horizon, jimmy eat world, and other "alt rock" radio staple bands of the late-90s and 00s. it's funny, but also seems bleak, like, if i was the lead singer of the "heart in a blender" song i wouldn't want to hold up that era to ridicule, doing so would present a major threat to my ego, i'd imagine.
― treeship., Wednesday, 23 December 2020 18:59 (three years ago) link
i guess he wants to forget himself and embrace the future, which, you know, might be an act of bravery, might be foolhardy, like what's so great about the present anyway

One of my neighbors circa 2001 got signed to Creed’s sub-label based on the strength of his band’s Vertical Horizon cover.
It was buttrock inception.

“After the Third Eye Blind guy told me he fucked my girlfriend he told me I was ‘a wordsmith like Jim Morrison,'” Collins recently tweeted, to which Jenkins responded, “Clearly this never happened as everyone knows you write like Stevie Nicks.”Ok, shitty 3rd Eye Blind guy getting another opportunity to embarrass himself is pretty good

Saw the Foo Fighters at the end of their debut album tour cycle, with Ween and Jawbreaker opening — quite a mid-90s combo. I’d been lucky enough to see Nirvana so it was an interesting compare/contrast. Also Dave still looked like his Nirvana self, the haircut and facial hair soon followed.

I was interning @ CMJ when their first single (“This Is a Call”) came in from the label... I remember the editors huddling around and playing it loudly, discussing the lyrics, etc.

― frogbs, Thursday, 24 December 2020 01:25 (three years ago) link
I guess the “standard tuning” tweet is clever
I didn't get this one. Was there some kind of move towards alternate tunings among popular rock bands in the early 00s? I didn't notice.
