"Some people put forward the theory that the monorail episode was an homage to The Music Man but I have always thought it was a musical tribute to Mussolini's ascent to power; which one is correct?"

Sideshow Mel was meant to represent the British Beehive of the 19th century

I believe all 30 seasons of the Simpsons are just a dream Tracy Ullman had on her show.

One guy actually asked "how was that drawing Kirk van Outen did meant to represent dignity?"

Someone replied saying it was intended to look like a jutting masculine chin which connotes dignity

It's all worth it for being reminded of that fucking "Paint Your Wagon" bit though, been shaking with laughter all afternoon

Best part is that it's a real musical, tho obv not literally about painting wagons

I didn't know about Sneed's, formerly Chucks, either. took me a while but worth it.

yeah that was pretty clever, I wonder how many people actually caught that. I too had to stare at it for a while before I got it

I just caught wind of this whole kerfuffle. I wasn't aware of viking as meaning great at something. I am aware that in Japan it means all you can eat buffet. Is Ralph dreaming of being a buffet? Do we know whether he's spent time in Japan?

Weinstein is yet to confirm my privately-held conviction that Hans Moleman wasn't really saying "boo-urns", he was just trying to gain favour with a powerful man at a vulnerable moment

Weinstein is now on board with this theory

hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 23 December 2020 18:54 (three years ago) link

nine months pass...

It's the most literal interpretation - he likes to dream he's a viking. If you have to think too much about what a line is referring to, it's almost always the most likely interpretation that's right

That said I think people should be able to laugh at a line for whatever reason!

flaw in that argument was, and is, that us "viking at sleep" folks didn't work hard to hear it that way - it's the first and funniest way the joke landed for us.

And upon further review you still thought that interpretation makes the most sense, that a writer would expect an audience to come up with that interpretation, and all the other writers and show runners would sign off on it.

Like this entire discussion wasn't some instant, personal reaction. You were presented with a much more sensible, likely interpretation and still persisted with a different one.

the appeals to authorial authority on this thread have always been so strange to me. like, i thought the author was dead. also: has anyone here ever actually logicked someone out of thinking a joke was funny, and into thinking it was funny in some different way that they prefer?

I Am Fribbulus (Xax) (Doctor Casino), Monday, 27 September 2021 15:33 (two years ago) link

I was able to convince my son that when I dropped my phone in the toilet it was funny as a satire on technological addiction rather than being funny because the phone was poopy

1) a big point y'all seem unable to consider is viewing it from a writer's/joke creator's POV
2) nobody is doing that. We're simply saying your interpretation is incorrect, that it wasn't how the joke was intended.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Monday, 27 September 2021 15:35 (two years ago) link

Appreciate the 'excels at sleep' folks who are still keeping up the fight.

I'm a reluctant literalist, which ultimately feels like the smaller and more mundane worldview. :(

jmm, Monday, 27 September 2021 15:48 (two years ago) link

the idea that the interpretation is "incorrect" because it wasn't what the writer who pitched it had in mind is precisely what i'm challenging!

I Am Fribbulus (Xax) (Doctor Casino), Monday, 27 September 2021 15:53 (two years ago) link

Not sure whether this entire thread would be better adapted as a university course, a 10-part podcast series or written out by hand in a leather-bound book and sealed in a chamber for a thousand years to be studied by future civilizations.

Some people really cannot handle being wrong about something. This is why postmodernism came about huh. Someone didn't understand a Marx Bros joke and then before we knew it, objective truth ceased to exist.

If explaining a joke always makes it much funnier, then arguing about which interpretation of a joke is more lolworthy is clearly the pinnacle of excellence!

Not trying to logic anyone into believing or finding anything funny

Telling someone theyre clearly wrong about a trifle should be ok on a message board

Telling them twenty times should be ok if they come back nineteen times, its all ok

Nobody denying anyone's right to be wrong nor to express themselves in communication of that wrongness

Just vvv important that we don't allow that to slip into some sort of acceptance that they are not wrong because they are wrong
