I just watched that Professor and The Madman (Oxford dictionary saga) on Netflix, it had a pretty good cast (Steve Coogan, Eddy Marsan, Sean Penn among others) and Mel Gibson's performance wiped the floor with all of them

well that is what the screenplay is all about, how santa's outward "jolliness" is really a defense mechanism and even, sometimes, a form of aggression. he is very often unfeeling and unresponsive: unwilling to adapt to a changing world or accept that his daughter has grown up.
