What are Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Flaws?

I do not know to what degree, if any, Pelosi made a conscious choice not to put other House Democrats in a strong position to challenge or replace her, but it is one of the tactics that naturally emerges among leadership groups. AOC is right that the position of Speaker is enormously complex and difficult and some period of apprenticeship is required to approach something like adequacy in that job. No one is likely to replace Pelosi that she hasn't already vetted and brought into a leadership role.

Progressives' loyalty to Biden will ensure them a "seat at the table" IIRC.

Disappointing.

If Biden has sense, he'll recall the old political wisdom that it's better to have the progressives "inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in". Based on the distribution of opinion on ilx, I'm pretty sure there are some who will prefer to remain outside pissing in, regardless.

Many of the representatives who came out most forcefully against Ocasio-Cortez have close ties to oil and gas, especially Cuellar. But perhaps more important was Cuellar’s personal opposition to AOC, as evidenced by his statement. Ocasio-Cortez backed Cuellar’s primary challenger, 27-year-old progressive Jessica Cisneros, in March’s primary. Cuellar won narrowly, with backing from the Koch political network and some last-minute campaigning from Speaker Pelosi herself, despite the fact that Cuellar regularly votes against the Democratic caucus and has routinely fundraised for Republicans.

Gotta keep room inside the tent for this guy pissing all over the sleeping bags and food.

They updated the article to remove the implication that progressive Congresswoman Degette wrote a pro fracking book when instead it was a congressional report that emphasized its dangers.

It's almost as if the centrist and center-right democrats noticed what happened to centrist and center-right republicans when the hard right started to primary them out of existence and they see AOC as the first harbinger of a similar dynamic in the Democratic Party that will eventually kick them out of their cushy jobs. For reps like that, AOC is not a smart, talented, likeable woman who can take the party to new popularity and the nation to a better more equable future, but America's Most Dangerous Woman who'll take away their perks and paychecks.

"I had a pretty traumatizing event happen to me," Ocasio-Cortez explained. "And I do not know if I can even disclose the full details of that event due to security concerns but I can tell you that I had a very close encounter where I thought I was going to die."

Nothing is going to happen to any sitting member of congress. Several of them openly committed "insider" trading this time last year and nothing came of it (though one lost an election partially because of it).

Smokahontas and John Spliff (PBKR), Friday, 29 January 2021 12:36 (three years ago) link

I find it a little weird that she is being so vague about something so serious, especially given how angry she remains. If Cruz or someone else truly, directly put her life at risk, then why not say exactly how? Did he tell people where her office is? Did he tell people to go there? It's unclear to me why an ongoing investigation would prevent her from making a specific accusation. If he's a danger, or did something criminal, what is she waiting for?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 January 2021 13:58 (three years ago) link

I think she said in one of her streams she'd been advised/requested to keep information back for security reasons.
