xp I think in some ways that distinction has actually become clearer these past couple of years, largely because of the podcast...he is more evidently in or out of character as "real" Tim gets more exposure, the curtain has definitely been pulled back a little

in the early days of the podcast I remember him refusing questions on air about On Cinema (not for exanple tour dates, but the process, what's in the works, etc.) but now he seems kind of open to it which bums me out a little

early-Woolf semantic prosody (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 16 December 2020 17:37 (three years ago) link

Hearing him talk for an hour about Paul Simon's Surprise is about as mask-off as it gets. Also that Office Hours episode when he had gotten targeted by Q folks.

The “real” Tim sadly has such corny taste in music.

Tim is a bit over earnest as a musician and music lover, which is an interesting stark contrast against his persona in regards to comedy. I think he's been a little wrapped up in feeling like a Real Indie Rockstar this past year especially, but I don't fault him! Glad he's having so much fun.

― Evan, Wednesday, December 9, 2020 12:14 PM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

crossposting here from bill callahan thread.

As Hadrian said it wasn't that long ago when it was very rare to witness Tim out of (some sort of) character/performance.

Evan, Thursday, 17 December 2020 17:13 (three years ago) link

I can't even imagine the musical crossover between IRL Gregg & Tim. Gregg is far more open-minded than he gets credit for, but he's long operated in some of the more extreme fringes of music to some of the more commercial (tour manager for Link Wray, Mr. Bungle, Faith No More... & VonLMO lol)

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 17 December 2020 17:18 (three years ago) link

Tim's music influence is dad rock as far as I can tell but he seems to know a lot about top level indie stuff too.
Is that corny in 2020? I don't think so. It is hip to un-ironically like music that was previously firmly cheese & corn. Who doesn't like Elote?

xps

Evan, Thursday, 17 December 2020 17:18 (three years ago) link

I guess I’m corny for not appreciating dad rock and “top level indie” bores me silly.

can't say i really care about tim's taste in music

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 17 December 2020 17:31 (three years ago) link

his taste in music is a big part of his public persona nowadays. I think his music is fine and I like 70s singer-songwriters but I guess it could irk otherwise

Was commenting more on the consensus these days. I do not care for much dad rock myself.

Wow the end of that bit hit close to home. A certain someone in my family loves to tell stories about how wherever they go, their [mundane reason or "snarky comment"] gets all sorts of disproportionately animated reactions out of other people, like Tim's grocery store cashier in the bit. Sorry, but I've seen you out in public and I know for a fact that you aren't constantly blowing people's minds and/or shocking them with your wit or your t-shirt or whatever it is you claim gets these cartoonish "reactions" all the time. So, Tim nailed it. I mean, that character (standup Tim?) might be my favorite character... he really gets the type of person he is parodying.

Evan, Friday, 23 April 2021 16:14 (two years ago) link

might be my favorite of his characters that he does*

Evan, Friday, 23 April 2021 16:24 (two years ago) link

It's the most subtle thing ever because he's just being the type of obnoxious douche who actually exists irl and those of us who know his stuff and understand what he's doing are like (nods knowingly + approvingly) while your average joe on the street sees that bit and is just like (exaggeratedly rolls eyes) 'okaaaaaaay?'.

You Can't Have the Woogie Without a Little Boogie (Old Lunch), Friday, 23 April 2021 16:27 (two years ago) link

Yeah right down to the impression with the bug eyes and "Ok??" or "Wow!" etc. These other people in their story are always either so impressed or flabbergasted somehow by my notoriously un-edgy family member. It's ironic.

Evan, Friday, 23 April 2021 16:32 (two years ago) link

It's a rich comedic thread going back at least as far as Spagett. You just got so spooked! You should've seen your faces!
