xpost -- Nope: following the introduction pre-title sequence a prison planet is the very first part of Rogue One. (Also in The Clone Wars there's a few episodes revolving around a jail on Coruscant or featuring it.)

I keep forgetting

We're not in love oh wait

There's the prison Finn and Rose meet Benicio Del Toro's guy in in The Last Jedi too.

Wow yea, duh!. Yea that was a silly question on my behalf!

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Saturday, 12 December 2020 18:06 (three years ago) link

This episode was not the best. What kind of secure facial-recognition-based terminal allows unknown faces (with a security token from a long-since-discharged criminal!) to log on and get the flight plans of its leaders? Also, the amount of people they are casually slaughtering each episode (and in this one, they were basically rightfully pissed-off villagers!) is getting pretty disturbing. There are only so many times Mando can cock his head wistfully after killing a bunch of people before I stop buying the tortured hero bit.

Is next week the finale? I'm looking forward to a kick-ass Grogu jailbreak.

DJI, Saturday, 12 December 2020 19:43 (three years ago) link

they were aiming for a TLJ-esque "is the Republic really that much better than the Empire??" bit right as the pirates were being killed, which tied into Burr's 'redemption' arc. didn't fully land given what we knew about Burr's character prior to this, but....

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Saturday, 12 December 2020 20:11 (three years ago) link

actually i was a little confused at that part - this was a planet the New Republic didn't know about, right? so how were they responsible for what was happening here?

Nhex, Saturday, 12 December 2020 20:19 (three years ago) link

I think Burr was pointing out regardless of the fact that it was an unknown Imperial mining colony, as far as the citizens were concerned, they were ruled by the Republican and their lives still sucked.

but I don't think it landed real well. seemed a bit tacked on.

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Saturday, 12 December 2020 20:23 (three years ago) link

a little bit, but i did like the general gist of that conversation and how far Mando was willing to go against his beliefs. and of course we knew by the end of the episode Burr was gonna go straight bad or good because of the show we're watching

Nhex, Saturday, 12 December 2020 20:28 (three years ago) link

since when does a blaster "click"

lol otm

mookieproof, Saturday, 12 December 2020 20:35 (three years ago) link

Yeah those little nonsensical moments like the blaster or the face scan that just serve the plot can be dumb but I guess I've accepted them as part of the package. Amy Sedaris's line delivery probably bothers me more tbh

Vinnie, Saturday, 12 December 2020 22:49 (three years ago) link

She’s channeling Bea Arthur’s line delivery in the SW Holiday Special

I just see Jerri Blank

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Sunday, 13 December 2020 00:25 (three years ago) link

There’s a lot of “no sound in space” stuff in this episode - the major ones that jumped out at me was the TIE fighters strafing right along the course of the truck hauling the volatile chemicals, and the pirates approaching from the rear when they’d clearly been attacking the other trucks from the flank or the front - but it’s sci-fi TV! I am so used to that. I just want the overall plot arc to make sense, a reasonable amount of tension, and for the characters to make interesting choices. On that front this episode delivered IMHO.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 13 December 2020 01:40 (three years ago) link

Cool episode, enjoyed it!

Yeah the face scan made no sense, but whatever.

good karma, my aesthetic (morrisp), Sunday, 13 December 2020 06:40 (three years ago) link

(Why didn’t Bill Burr ask to be dropped off on at a slightly more convenient planet, lol? His plan is to wander down to one of those villages? They’re gonna think he’s an Imperial dude who survived the explosion, he’ll be in deep $#%*! “No, see, it was me who blew it up... honest!)

good karma, my aesthetic (morrisp), Sunday, 13 December 2020 07:18 (three years ago) link

I enjoyed this ep

honestly the only thing that bugged me is a thing that has always bugged me since I was a kid:

Slave 1 looks stupid

I have *always* hated that it lands horizontal & flies vertical, it looks like a fucking shoehorn crossed with a hairdryer & the flat plane makes no sense

it’s dumb & i hate it

THERE I SAID IT

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 13 December 2020 07:22 (three years ago) link

it looks like an elephant's head

huge rant (sic), Sunday, 13 December 2020 08:01 (three years ago) link

It might make more sense if we saw it vertical in space but horizontal under atmospheres. Other than that I won't hear a word against DUMBO I.

nashwan, Sunday, 13 December 2020 12:25 (three years ago) link

Slave 1 always gives me a mad nostalgia rush as I used to own the toy.

Why didn’t Bill Burr ask to be dropped off on at a slightly more convenient planet, lol?

I know, I'd probably rather be in prison than on my own in the middle of an alien jungle!

chap, Sunday, 13 December 2020 13:11 (three years ago) link

he's going to deliver an 11 minute improvised routine about how Morak sucks

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Sunday, 13 December 2020 13:26 (three years ago) link

slave 1 is just a concept car of transforming spaceships, which are seen throughout the universe; instead of tilting the thrusters for VTOL it tilts the crew cabin inside.

the face scan is not for authentication of the user, it’s for non-repudiation (https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/6730/what-is-the-difference-between-authenticity-and-non-repudiation#6732) - a record keeping function so that anybody using the terminal can be positively identified after the fact.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 13 December 2020 15:58 (three years ago) link

the pirates are probably not from morak; the villagers we see are humans and the pirates’ motive seems to be controlling the empire’s access to rydonium so that they can extract fees for safe passage.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 13 December 2020 16:00 (three years ago) link

boba fett’s ship is a streetlight with stuff tacked on

as in, that is what the original model was. a lot of the other ships were made via kitbashing, where you buy a bunch of scale model car, plane, etc. kits and combine them in novel ways. combined with random crap they also glued on

mh, Sunday, 13 December 2020 16:05 (three years ago) link

i read somewhere (dont rember where) that Slave 1 was actually modelled on a radar dish. ILM ppl noted afterwards that it looked like nearby streetlamps & then the streetlamp thing became lore after that.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 13 December 2020 16:08 (three years ago) link

the crap was not random; lucas had very clear design ideas and shapes he wanted represented in each starfighter design.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 13 December 2020 16:09 (three years ago) link

I stand corrected, inspired by a streetlamp according to a sketchbook and this former ILM (the company, not our board) guy

https://mattwallin.com/mattwallincom/2014/4/11/slave-1

mh, Sunday, 13 December 2020 16:11 (three years ago) link

I meant random crap as in the actual materials, not what they represent!

mh, Sunday, 13 December 2020 16:11 (three years ago) link

also <3 at Joe Johnston being one of the creators of the sketchbook

mh, Sunday, 13 December 2020 16:18 (three years ago) link

but like, when you walk onto the ship when it lands as a passenger, do you lie down & strap in like an astronaut in a shuttle launch?

and the wind resistance/drag would be ridic

its DUMB

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 13 December 2020 16:24 (three years ago) link

when you walk onto the ship when it lands as a passenger, do you lie down & strap in like an astronaut in a shuttle launch?

No. The tilting of the passenger cabin is actually shown in the beginning of this ep. The pilot and co-pilot DO strap in on their back though.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 13 December 2020 16:27 (three years ago) link

strap in and strap on

Lover of Nixon (or LON for short) (Neanderthal), Sunday, 13 December 2020 16:27 (three years ago) link

I kinda can’t believe Bill Burr is like 52! What an age to be starting over on a nowhere jungle planet.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 13 December 2020 17:29 (three years ago) link

I dunno, he looks and sounds like an old man to me

Nhex, Sunday, 13 December 2020 19:16 (three years ago) link

52 is the new 42 and is quite young

mh, Monday, 14 December 2020 00:30 (three years ago) link

he's five years younger than ming-na wen

mookieproof, Monday, 14 December 2020 00:50 (three years ago) link

Which makes all of these people about the same age as Darth Vader if he wasn’t dead. Being a Sith Lord or a Jedi Master puts some fucking miles on you, I tell ya.

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Monday, 14 December 2020 00:58 (three years ago) link

xp yeah, but Ming-Na Wen is a goddamn immortal so... also they gave Boba some gnarly Mad Max-esque face makeup
