Maybe it's due to the physical struggle of writing all that with your thumbs

I'm not above gossip every now and then (all the time) but spare everyone the self-pity jfc

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Tuesday, 8 December 2020 15:13 (three years ago) link

Yeah the 'this a healing process for me!' tone really jars and makes me less inclined to believe him. I'd be more into it if was 'haha do you guys wanna hear some shit?'

I've always found Gou's music and aesthetic a bit lifestyle magazine-ish to be honest so doesn't surprise me if she is a bit like that.

chap, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 15:33 (three years ago) link

Daniel Wang('s music) is amazing. This attempt at canceling over boring neighbor gripes is dumb.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 8 December 2020 16:58 (three years ago) link

Wang has done a few vids for 'Electronic Beats'. He comes across as an enlightened intelligent guy.
But this post is a load of bollocks no matter what you think of Gou. Most definitely ill-conceived.

millmeister, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 17:09 (three years ago) link

Plenty of similar stories about her have been going around for a while, it's fairly obvious at this stage that she's not a nice person. I didn't know the stuff about the plague raves and the £100,000 bung though.

Your man comes across as bit of a whingeing gimp as well. "I'm trembling and I want to vomit as I type this on my Samsung phone" – oh, grow some balls ffs.

And there's absolutely no reason he couldn't just bitch to his mates rather than do it on such a public platform (not that I didn't read the whole thing avidly).

chap, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 17:30 (three years ago) link

Yes, there's no money shot there really, is there. Btw that "lifestyle magazine" comment of yours upthread puts a finger on why I can't really get into her music either, but I couldn't really articulate it properly.

Didn't she go out with Jackmaster for a while?

Someone on IG told him that maybe this would have been better resolved privately and he responded by comparing her to Trump which shows how the past few years has given everyone massive brain worms

Evan, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 19:57 (three years ago) link

daniel wang is a legend, weird coincidence but i finally got the 4LP rush hour set a couple weeks ago (bought the cd version when it came out but hadn't listened to it for years) and pretty much all of it still sounds super fresh

can't really think of any other producer / dj who's contributed as much to the rehabilitation and reintegration of actual disco / italo into dance music (as opposed to just jacking hooks to make banging filter house tracks)

metro area maybe but they were years behind him, faze action i suppose kicked it off w/ "in the trees" but imo their overall body of work is much less impressive

peggy gou is a fine dj with average skills (which in the cdj era doesn't mean a whole lot) and slightly better than average music taste, she has some pretty good early productions (i reach for her rekids EPs a lot though i like the galcher remix more than any of the originals) and a lot of new ones that i find pretty boring, and like most other "top tier" techno / house DJs in the 2010s her popularity relative to other DJs (and the speed with which she burst onto the scene) doesn't seem in line to me with much else other than being very photogenic

everyone has meltdowns on social media sometimes, famous ppl more than average, famous musicians much more than average and DJs probably more than anybody else because they've been cooped up unable to work for 9 months now, so while this is obviously not the best use of his time i'm cutting danny some slack here

the late great, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 20:15 (three years ago) link

Isn't this kind of alleged narcissistic toxicity pretty common in the DJ business to begin with? What is to be gained by posting this publicly? Any catharsis acquired doing this is its own form of toxic narcissism imho.

However, I do think she's a bit of a flavor of the month type, so if this rant is largely true, seems like she's going to burn enough bridges her talent won't be able to overcome in the long term.

octobeard, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 20:32 (three years ago) link

yes, nothing, agree, agree

the late great, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 20:37 (three years ago) link

DW has been posting these Gou rants to his personal FB for a couple of years now. I'm not sure why he felt the need to take it into public realms.

PG is such a huge brand that this will have about as much impact on her career as a fly trying to take down an elephant.

I'm not sure why the so called underground of dance music gets upset by all this kind of (alleged) behaviour. I feel they should expect nothing from mainstream dance culture, ignore it and come to the realisation it is a separate world based entirely on being as famous / popular as possible no matter what that might take. Also, the sooner the "underground" stops aspiring to embrace the tropes of mainstream dance culture the better. So-called undergrounds are much, much better off when they devote less energy to trying to make the mainstream change and stop perceiving the mainstream as some sort of mirror image.

man the two times he brings up mental illness in his very misguided post (first, deriving it from her appearance, then deriving it from her tendency to center herself when writing about recently-deceased legends (don't care to confirm if this is true or not in the first place)), it is totally fucking offensive, that is all i wanna say

This 100 times, and it also applies in many other genres as well as media realms. Poetry and literature in particular would do well to dispense with the ridiculous idea that self-publishing, for example, is somehow "lesser than," which is one that has creeped into even the more strident, experimental realms of US poetry in recent years. It's disappointing and it sucks.
