Sure I'm far from the first person on this thread to mention that someone not liking something isn't "controversial".

Blue Oyster Cult are a good band, but they’re so archetypal ‘70s rock band’ that I wouldn’t blame anyone to be turned off.

I don’t really see the ‘hard rock’ element overall (considering how fast things were moving in the early 70s) and tbh I can’t envisage a point where they might have had needed guitars on stage at once - Im reminded of the E Street Band with Bruce, Nils and Van Zandt - I mean, really?

I’d also ban the mention of Richard Meltzer and Patti Smith and any other BOC-adjacent folks from any further BOC discussion; I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much attention given to people who weren’t actually in the band

Yes, Blue Oyster Cult are exceptional in a number of ways, but musical style isn't necessarily one of them. Probably my favorite thing about them is their 70's boogie rock is somehow ethereal where you'd expect it to be earthy and, well... Richard Meltzer and Patti Smith have something to do with that sometimes.

What's the conroversial opinion here? Lyricists/songwriters/svengalis (delete as you will) don't count?

I'm with you on too many guitars but tbf there are way more egregious examples of this than BOC. Like, uhh, Radiohead >:)

The lyrics in BOC are pretty important, even though they're apparently meaningless a lot of the time, they're just so disconnected and have such a distancing effect

They're also very witty

Is it controversial to say that Jefferson Starship is better than Jefferson Airplane? Like quite a bit better? Because I think that's where I'm at currently.

Red Octopus is an all-time classic imo and I'd rate it above the individual Airplane records I know.

I'm going purely on singles here. JA singles...yeah, they just don't do much for me. JS has a more pseudo-prog + AM gold vibe that I can firmly get behind. 'Miracles'! 'With Your Love'! 'Count on Me'! 'Jane'! Hell, I'll even throw the Balin solo singles in there. 'FEED YOUR HEAD'? No thanks, Grace. I'll feed my mid-'70s coke habit instead, if you don't mind.

(I guess, tbf, when I say Balin singles I'm really just talking about 'Hearts' here but I hold firm on my position nonetheless.)

Jefferson Starship was a needed clean-up and reboot after the chaos and disorder of the Airplane's Bark and Long John Silver. The real test is, what do you think of Hot Tuna?

I've heard all the Blur albums, both by The Good The Bad and The Queen, and even the Albarn solo album, yet never felt a need to check out Gorillaz besides seeing a couple of videos. Something about "we're actually cartoon characters" clicks a big "NOPE" switch in my head.

I think I like all the big hits from the entire Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship continuum. I like their singers' voices.

I can't remember a single one other than "Somebody to Love" and "We Built This City." They might be the big 60s/70s band that's disappeared from the cultural landscape most completely.

xpost lol, that was actually precisely what prompted this revive, as I finally watched that POS for the first time last night. Their song was pretty good! And I'd been listening to '70s Billboard hits of late and those JS songs were pretty good!

Never heard JS but, for me, JA are the ultimate Band You've Tried To Get Into But Failed, er, band,

feel like White Rabbit from years of movies and documentaries is up there with Turn, Turn, Turn and by the Byrds and Purple Haze by Hendrix as musical shorthand for "The Sixties"

A perfect example; when I read this post, my immediate thought wasn't "Oh yeah, that song!" it was "Wait, that was them?" JA/JS were almost totally anonymous, stylistically speaking.

i have also never managed to get into jefferson airplane but i wouldn't call them anonymous. starship sans jefferson were def anonymous, they were designed that way

"nothing's gonna stop us now" is sick as hell; "we built this city" is not a good song but i have a weird affection for its tastelessness at this point in my life
