I found some Charlie Feathers last night - sounded good. If I find time this evening (questionable as I'm out to see Mark Thomas & Rob Newman, yay Political Comedy!), I'll sort something out.

(have just been through my lists of stuff he's played in the last couple of years and there are about 10 others that haven't been posted yet that i have (no Charlie Feathers though). this may take a while...)

I like the fact that Paul Morely namechecked Melanie, even if it is her "novelty" single.

and Sheena EASTON is ACE! How could you NOT like 9-5?!?!?

Mike T-Diva, I am intrigued by your taste in music. I wish my computer could cope with You Send It and I'd go and listen to some of those MP3s.

(Also, YSI-ing major acts like the Beatles isn't perhaps such a great idea.)
you may be right there mike, it was the completist in me who uploaded those songs. ysi only offers a maximum of 25 downloads. this doesn't really do harm to anyone.

and sorry for my not so nice comment upthread, patita. i wasn't in a good mood last night.

I understand your motive, alex in manhattan, so no harm. hope things are better for you now.

I'd given some thought to burning the mp3s to cds and making a few nice little boxes for them as gifts for fellow music lovers. silly, but it might be fun.

002 Don't Play Blue Eyes (beware, digital clipping = horrid sound)

022 Stop! Get A Ticket
024 Sugar Bee (this also good)
044 Lemon Tree
(i have a theoretical 17 more at home, all played on his shows in 2003 and 2004, although i think a couple of them are duplicates with mike's above (cheers mike))

This is a great great list. The Users and Some Chicken recds are great and I'm so pleased to see The Factory's 'Path Through The Forest' and Andy Capp's 'Popatop' in there. One wierd thing - the Eddie and Ernie single 'I Believe She Will' is not from 1984, more like 1967, I'd say. Maybe a re-press?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 27 October 2005 07:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Did somebody say "Path Through The Forest"?

http://s58.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1M733JQ6HE5YH2Z9QZQ7CXO1PC
Clefs of Lavender Hill - Stop! - Get a ticket
Johnny Fortune - Dragster, Soul surfer
Idle Race - Here we go round the lemon tree, My father's son
Andy Capp - Popatop
The Factory - Path through the forest
MC5 - Looking At You
Jody Reynolds - Endless Sleep
Johnny Adams - I Wish It Would Rain
Electro Hippies - Mega-armageddon death (Yes, it really is that short)

Sorry about the two duplications with koogs, but the zip was already made and time was tight. This be a better "Popatop", not sure.

11 more this evening, and then I'm done.

(can you post that bonus track individually (or email it) please. i don't want to download the other 7 tracks again.)

(also, which 11 more?)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 27 October 2005 08:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I can post it individually this evening, but not before. Same goes for the track listing for the other 11. (But 3 of them are the Upholsterers EP - yeah, MORE Jack White...)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 27 October 2005 08:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I didn't post "Dead Leaves" as my version has a glitch in it.

Also, don't seem to have "Candy Cane Children", "The Story of the Magi/Silent Night", "Hello Operator", "Jolene" or "The big three killed my baby" here.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 27 October 2005 08:40 (eighteen years ago) link

There's a slight similarity between that Yardbirds track and Franz Ferdinand's "Tell Her Tonight", isn't there?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:25 (eighteen years ago) link

the version of 'you're pretty good looking' on the 7" runs jack's voice through some weird vocoder effect, not unlike Cher's 'believe' or roy vedas's 'fragments of life'

foxy boxer (stevie), Thursday, 27 October 2005 13:27 (eighteen years ago) link

It had been years since I'd heard Easton's "9-5" (thus my dismissive remark way upthread). I listened about 8 times last night - it's a great song!

TRG (TRG), Thursday, 27 October 2005 13:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah, the near-perfect dialectic of the first three Sheena Easton singles! Hell, the songs even begin with consecutive letters of the alphabet...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 27 October 2005 13:50 (eighteen years ago) link

That "You're pretty good looking" version is the "Trendy American Remix" which is on the b-side of "Lord send me an angel". But it's not specifically listed.

There is no "Fell in love with a girl" seven-inch on Sympathy for the record industry, let alone anything called "It takes two".

For the record, "9 to 5" is known as "Morning Train" to the rest of the world as it was retitled to avoid confusion with the Dolly Parton song.

six more (lots of clashes with mike and his are generally better quality so...):

060: Sipple Out Deh
063: Coast To Coast
064: His Guiding Hand
078: Leader Is Burning
099: Keep Her Under Hand
108: Love Is Not Real

http://s41.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0772VBXOPAEJG0GRC3WOYBWBZG (12M ish)

all taken from recordings of shows and, therefore, not the best quality in the world. have possibly 1 more (111: My Friend Jack) but otherwise that's it from me.

(that emerlist davjack thing i heard last night whilst extracting these. it's crazy. was from the show with, i think, that nina nastasia live at peel acres track where the phone rings in the middle...)

koogs (koogs), Friday, 28 October 2005 07:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, Emerlist Davjack is great! Also, that Yardbirds B-side, 'Psycho Daisies' is a CORKER IIRC.

Nice work everyone, just wish I had the opportunity to download 'em all :o(

just seen the modified dates on those files mike. nice to know i wasn't the only one... 8)

should be

121. The Versatiles/Lee Perry - Cutting Razor + Black Belt Jones

(7" of which is currently selling for 70 euros in places... but also on Kung Fu Meets The Dragon, Lee Perry cd)

koogs (koogs), Friday, 28 October 2005 07:44 (eighteen years ago) link

ah, that emerlist davjack thing of mike's is different from the one listed. in the show he was talking to nina and her band about it and he'd provided some sort of advertising trailer for it which had later been pressed up as a very limited run of 7" singles for other djs.

http://home.clara.net/koogy/music/070_Emerlist_Davjack_Trailer.mp3

I have the Some Chicken 7", and I've got La Peste on mp3, but I can't YSI it at the moment because my DSL is fucked at home. If it gets fixed today I'll try and send those when I get home.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 28 October 2005 09:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Some Chicken's been done, but La Peste would be great...

koogs: That trailer has clips of loads of different Nice songs, but more in their better-known prog-rock vein. Emerlist Davjack was their debut single, and hence more psychedelic pop.

If anyone's looking for Mike Spencer & The Cannibals, then be advised that the slow blues B-side "Nothing takes the place of you" was the track that Peel rated (and played to death in the late 70s). I seem to remember him dismissing the actual A-side as nothing special.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 28 October 2005 09:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought only the A-side of Some Chicken had been done, but haven't reread the whole thread, so dunno.
