Dan, where is the boot of "Kiss Me Again" floating around at? i picked up the "go bang" one.
Steve Audika told me that the freak-out at the end of that longer "Kiss Me" jam is David Byrne and Henry Flynt! which i almost still don't believe, mostly as i don't hear Flynt.
Susan, i love AR but still don't dig T-Heads, so no worries. i do think the roots of that guitar sound are in highlife and ju-ju, the music of King Sunny Ade.

b8a, Friday, 19 August 2005 11:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I am surprized reissues take so long in coming

It's HARD!

I can't remember where I saw the boot, maybe flexx.be? Henry Flynt? That's crazy, didn't know that.

I like the Talking Heads and Russell fans should check out I Zimbra and David Byrne's vocal appearance on Robert Fripp's disco song Under Heavy Manners.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 August 2005 11:46 (eighteen years ago) link

About that guitar sound -- the ju-ju and highlife connections are possible but to me it sounds like a downtown-y (i.e. raw and angular a la Arto Lindsay, et.al) style of disco rhythm guitar playing. Am I stating the obvious? This kind of playing has just always sounded New York to me.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:30 (eighteen years ago) link

yo black dice

Outsider Enter Port City (sexyDancer), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:31 (eighteen years ago) link

here's one more. it's arthur performing on peter gordon's 1986, 'innocent' lp.

Wow, thanks for "That Hat" Stirmonster! Another blast from my past (*sigh* - my in-storage vinyl collection awaits a larger NYC apartment for accomodation). I don't know if Peter Gordon/Love of Life Orchestra has previously been discussed in another thread, but folks who like AR and the Downtown scene would probably dig LOLO. And (drummer) David Van Tiegham's recordings from that time as well.

drewo (drewo), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

The first Love Of Life Orchestra record is the one I really love, disco, horns, art-rock, and Arto and Byrne playing guitar.

Does Black Dice sound like Arthu Russell?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 August 2005 16:52 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah Jacobs, i also have felt the "need" to understand the TH thing too -not so much b/c i need to like them, but i can't figure out WHY i don't like them. it feels like their music has this obvious 2 layer thing - its split between pop art and something greater underneath (serious and lovely music)-- and you can kinda enjoy both parts separately which fucking annoys me. whereas i think arthur russell's whole deal was he did it all at once - it seems like a totally different approach. but i do love elements of byrne-didn't know he was actually playing with arthur - cool.

"to me it sounds like a downtown-y (i.e. raw and angular a la Arto Lindsay, et.al) style of disco rhythm guitar playing. Am I stating the obvious?" - i was kinda embarrassed to ask b/c i figured this might be the case, but since i don't know much about the sound at that time...well...i'll stop wondering about it now.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 19 August 2005 17:05 (eighteen years ago) link

think jeff is ref. the 'high(4)life' git sound of bjorn?

b8a, Friday, 19 August 2005 18:13 (eighteen years ago) link

ja

Outsider Enter Port City (sexyDancer), Friday, 19 August 2005 18:23 (eighteen years ago) link

i really like the vibe of the music but i can't get over his voice. it's so damned soft. am i the only one?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 19 August 2005 19:37 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost - "i do think the roots of that guitar sound are in highlife and ju-ju, the music of King Sunny Ade" -i missed this part even though it was referred in other post -argh(i'm at work so i tend to skim haphazardly) anyway, i'll check this out, thx.

i tend to like the voice unilaterally.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 19 August 2005 19:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Polmo Polpo's cover of Kiss Me Again is great. Does anyone here need it? I'll YSI if so.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 19 August 2005 20:07 (eighteen years ago) link

yes pls!

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 19 August 2005 20:08 (eighteen years ago) link

I think his voice is a nice cross between Robert Wyatt and Kermit.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 19 August 2005 20:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Hahaha!

I think I'm going to type out that big Melody Maker aricle/interview from '87 and post it here, unless someone wants to host it as a text file. Was just re-reading it and it's pretty fascinating. I'm sure all the AR fans here will enjoy it.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 19 August 2005 20:32 (eighteen years ago) link

yes, do (to the MM article, not so much the Polmo Polpo).

Beta (abeta), Friday, 19 August 2005 20:42 (eighteen years ago) link

and i finally found a nice contribution to the cause...

the seven inch version of "Pop Your Funk" that Toop described as "one of the craziest 45s ever released."

Beta (abeta), Friday, 19 August 2005 21:07 (eighteen years ago) link

am i the only one?

No, I find it too fey.

I was especially bummed when I found out how pervy he was, but only for the disparity between the voice and the sex drive.

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 19 August 2005 21:16 (eighteen years ago) link

if you're looking for a strict correlation between vox and sex drive you are bound to be confounded.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 19 August 2005 21:28 (eighteen years ago) link

wow, i'm amazed at how different the 7" version of "PYF" is from the 'world of arthur russell' version.

rajeev (rajeev), Friday, 19 August 2005 21:42 (eighteen years ago) link

if you're looking for a strict correlation between vox and sex drive you are bound to be confounded.

Hmmm, you're right, but singing like a tortured poet and living like a dog in heat seem like polar opposites in sentimentality to me.

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 19 August 2005 21:46 (eighteen years ago) link

sung playfully, not tortured:

Show me what the girl does to the boy
If you can get around to it.
Show me what the girl does.

Show me what the girl does to the boy
If you can get around to it.

Show me what d-do you most enjoy
If you can get around to it.

Learnin' more about you...
I hope it's never ever finished!
What it's like when I am
Your new toy,
If you can get around to it.

I get excited.
You get excited.
Why should you fight it?

Sex with you—
Bein' right next you—
Won't do it.
Bein' right next to you—
The two of us—
Won't do it.
Bein' so kind to me.

willem (willem), Friday, 19 August 2005 21:53 (eighteen years ago) link

organic music indeed!! thanks twitch! (and everyone else. i just haven't heard the rest of the ysi'ed tracks yet)

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 19 August 2005 21:53 (eighteen years ago) link

sung playfully, not tortured:

what song is this?

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 19 August 2005 21:55 (eighteen years ago) link

this is sublime. it's like the instruments are disintegrating and reforming, morphing into something else, human voices almost. it's nearly synaesthetic and i rarely get that nuance from music.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:01 (eighteen years ago) link

@ confounded: forgot to type the title - it's "Get Around To It". can be found on Calling Out of Context.

willem (willem), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:04 (eighteen years ago) link

you know I never really listened to the World of Arthur Russell and now I realize, the version of Let's Go Swimming is not my favorite. The version that is on Disco Not Disco 2, that I also have on (cough)my copy of the 12" kicks much ass and if anyone has Disco Not Disco 2 on CD, they should YSI right away for those out there who only have World of...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:09 (eighteen years ago) link

judging by the length of the track, you're talking about Walter Gibbons' Coastal Dub. (the only one of the 12" dubs I don't have :-()

willem (willem), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:14 (eighteen years ago) link

i have to say that i look forward to a book about arthur russell with some trepidation.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:16 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah I just checked...It's the Coastal Dub that totally kicks my ass. The first moment I heard that song I was just floored.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Polmo Polpo - Kiss ME Again and Again here. It's good.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 19 August 2005 23:05 (eighteen years ago) link

7" Pop Your Funk fucking mad! Not much like the 'known' vers. Thanks for the upload.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 19 August 2005 23:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Ok. Interview's finished -- all 7 pages (MS Word, single spaced) and I need a drink. Thing's damn good, though. How should I go about putting this where people can get to it? Will I get a thrashing if I paste it on this thread?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 19 August 2005 23:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Start a new thread and put only that on. Then link to it from this thread!

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 19 August 2005 23:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Here it is!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 19 August 2005 23:45 (eighteen years ago) link

shit - i'll have to wait till monday to get those. oh swoon -i think it just follows that he was a perv...seems like someone so full of life - really tuned in atleast ... just that amazing awareness of organic things, patterns and beauty yet wanting to take it further and make it all sexy and discofied ....mmmmmmmm. And definitely a lot of tenderness and sensuality coming out in his voice and lyrics.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Saturday, 20 August 2005 01:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Beta, is that 7" Pop Your Funk from this? http://www.tigersushi.com/site/frameset.jsp?page=Art.jsp&ArtId=3706

Thanks to everyone who uploaded tracks - the Russell discography is immensee ...

Brakhage, Saturday, 20 August 2005 01:53 (eighteen years ago) link

re: his voice - i always heard it as a gentler vers of john martyn rather thatn the oft cited nick drake comparison. things like small hours off of one world have that same hazy playful introverted singing to my self feel. and the music slurs dreamily in a way drake never did.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 20 August 2005 04:22 (eighteen years ago) link

also obv dubspace and echoplex.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 20 August 2005 04:26 (eighteen years ago) link

he's never felt like nick drake to me either. i mean i can see why people compare them, but to me nick drakes voice is otherworldly and cold and a.r.'s is completly the opposite

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Saturday, 20 August 2005 04:31 (eighteen years ago) link

ok heres the other side of the felix track click

credited to nicky siano, produced by killer whale. i never dloaded the tiger stripes link above but on my 12 i think it turns into this halfwat through.

is that arthur singing bad lil kitten?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Saturday, 20 August 2005 05:35 (eighteen years ago) link

All you YSI posters are Stars!!

Hmmm, you're right, but singing like a tortured poet and living like a dog in heat seem like polar opposites in sentimentality to me.

Polar opposites?? More like mutually reinforcing characteristics!

LRJP! (LRJP!), Saturday, 20 August 2005 09:59 (eighteen years ago) link

i guess so. having read that it was reminiscent of Merzbow, i begged Mr. Audika for a rip of it. i'm with Dan though, in that the most crucial (re: the ones that will convert you) Arthur disco trax are to be found only on the Disco Not Disco comps, not World of. think i slightly grumble about that here: http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/r/russell_arthur/world-of.shtml

b8a, Saturday, 20 August 2005 14:45 (eighteen years ago) link

thanks so much for the 'pop your funk' 7" YSI. i had so wanted to hear that for so long. out there!!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 20 August 2005 16:45 (eighteen years ago) link

someone requested on the ysi-thread, but i guess it's not out of place on this thread: Dinosaur - Kiss Me Again 12"

willem (willem), Sunday, 21 August 2005 09:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks willem. Listening to this I found out that the Kiss Me Again on the Disco Not Disco comp is actually the b-side version.

Brakhage (brakhage), Sunday, 21 August 2005 14:12 (eighteen years ago) link

sorta...there's 2 Kiss Me Again 12"s. They both have the same 12 minute version on the a side, one has the 6 minute version on the b side, that's the edit that's on Disco Not Disco, the other version has a 13 or so minute dub mix which sounds more like the 12 minute version then the edit. I think the one featuring the edit is clear red vinyl. I used to have both but gave the one with the edit to a very deserving friend seeing as how I have the edit on Disco Not Disco, and he'd given my RIS's Love and Music, an even more expensive 12".

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks for clearing that up Dan!

Brakhage (brakhage), Sunday, 21 August 2005 16:56 (eighteen years ago) link

no problem, I just downloaded what Willem kindly posted, which is the 12 min and a side with the "version" flipside, Great stuff. The 6 minute edit version is easier to find but I just tried to upload it here:

http://s37.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0ZEPZVUO4B0VJ0TM2RV74MEMYI

hope that works
