Wow, how timely. I was just listening to Out of the Blue. ELO were the first band I became obsessed with as a kid. NWR and Out of the Blue were great. I always felt Discovery was too Bee Gees like. Their earlier albums are more tasteful but less fun. I like how their 76-77 sound got so big and ridiculous, and OOTB was like a children's record. And the animals sang, "Wonderous is our great blue ship that sails around the mighty sun and joy to everyone who rides along." Heh. Time was the first album I nearly had heart failure in anticipation. The rest of their albums were pretty embarrassing, which is why I hadn't listened to them for over 20 years. Now I'm looking forward to those remasters, go figure.

There's supposedly an Idle Race 5CD box set in the works too...

Still no expanded Secret Messages then - it was supposed to be a double originally but Lynne was told that was uneconomic in times of vinyl crisis (1983? I don't recall any vinyl crisis then. But anyway...). Apparently when reissued on CD they attempted to restore it to its original format but Lynne put the kibosh on that out of pique, so we still don't get a legit issue of "Hello Old Friend," possibly their/his best-ever song.

This is the expanded Secret Messages, still missing the song you mention, I note.

EVERYONE, in spite of genre, made disco in 1979...

what, only a single passing reference to the xanadu soundtrack?

i'm alive and all over the world are hands down the best elo songs ever made.

(note how daft punk lifted a single throwaway moment from all over the world and expanded it into their biggest single)

Shame he's passed on at such a relatively young age. Underrated bassist, the sound he got on Discovery is begging to be sampled. He added some nice vocal touches too, especially on 'Evil Woman'. RIP.

Saddened to hear this. RIP.

I remember an ELO feature in Mojo back in 2001 where Kelly talked about becoming a cabbage for eight months and losing both his home and his first wife following his ill-advised and only partially successful legal action against JL. It seems that he ended up playing pubs for beer money. He was wrong to sue but in the end deserved better.

RIP. Now I guess Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan and Richard Tandy were key members to a larger extent, but Grouchott contributed to most of their best albums.

Oh god, Eldorado. Out of the blue might have all the hits, but this was their masterpiece...

on the remastered edition, you get all the orchestral interludes as one track, as they recorded it and then split it up across the album.

a fantastic album.

There's a very very long thread on the HOffman forums that's worth a read if you're interested in the history of this. The main person in the thread was working on a book which was maybe going to be proposed for 33 1/3 but it sounded like it was getting too long for that and he's been working on it for three years or something.

Anyway, how did people rate the Lynne's ELO tour from a few years ago? Wondering if I should spring for tix this summer.

when all is said and done re this band, it cannot be denied that this is a seriously mad cover.
