Based on the relative quality of their lyrics and music, I don't understand why Big K.R.I.T. isn't more popular and critically well-regarded than Kendrick Lamar or Run the Jewels.

krit probably deserves to be remembered as one of the best rappers of the early 2010s, he became unfashionable kinda quickly unfortunately

Whitesnake's "Still of the Night" is a superior composition and performance to anything released by Led Zeppelin after 1975.

I used to utterly despise Bejar in the live setting... the tour he did with Frog Eyes (supporting "Your Blues") was one of the worst shows I've ever seen. His voice was profoundly unlikeable

He got real good these past ten years, though

R.E.M. is actually really boring

― Οὖτις

I agree with this one. I don’t hate them at all and I even have some sort of respect for them, but they’re such a boring band to listen to.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 7 December 2020 04:34 (three years ago) link

I’ve known for years that The National sucked and the Taylor Swift album is further evidence of it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 7 December 2020 04:42 (three years ago) link

The pairing makes sense though, both their music is completely flat and devoid of joy.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 7 December 2020 04:47 (three years ago) link

Sure I'm far from the first person on this thread to mention that someone not liking something isn't "controversial".

everything, Monday, 7 December 2020 04:55 (three years ago) link

Blue Oyster Cult are a good band, but they’re so archetypal ‘70s rock band’ that I wouldn’t blame anyone to be turned off.

I don’t really see the ‘hard rock’ element overall (considering how fast things were moving in the early 70s) and tbh I can’t envisage a point where they might have had needed guitars on stage at once - Im reminded of the E Street Band with Bruce, Nils and Van Zandt - I mean, really?

Master of Treacle, Monday, 7 December 2020 06:45 (three years ago) link

Er, three guitars

Master of Treacle, Monday, 7 December 2020 06:45 (three years ago) link

They still needed guitars; BOC as the Long Island Kraftwerk was always unlikely

Master of Treacle, Monday, 7 December 2020 06:57 (three years ago) link

I’d also ban the mention of Richard Meltzer and Patti Smith and any other BOC-adjacent folks from any further BOC discussion; I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much attention given to people who weren’t actually in the band

Master of Treacle, Monday, 7 December 2020 07:33 (three years ago) link

Yes, Blue Oyster Cult are exceptional in a number of ways, but musical style isn't necessarily one of them. Probably my favorite thing about them is their 70's boogie rock is somehow ethereal where you'd expect it to be earthy and, well... Richard Meltzer and Patti Smith have something to do with that sometimes.

What's the conroversial opinion here? Lyricists/songwriters/svengalis (delete as you will) don't count?

I'm with you on too many guitars but tbf there are way more egregious examples of this than BOC. Like, uhh, Radiohead >:)

Lamont Dozier Dream House (Deflatormouse), Monday, 7 December 2020 09:28 (three years ago) link

The lyrics in BOC are pretty important, even though they're apparently meaningless a lot of the time, they're just so disconnected and have such a distancing effect

Lamont Dozier Dream House (Deflatormouse), Monday, 7 December 2020 09:54 (three years ago) link

They're also very witty

Is it controversial to say that Jefferson Starship is better than Jefferson Airplane? Like quite a bit better? Because I think that's where I'm at currently.

Every JS single I've heard during the Ford-Carter years has depressed me, i.e. please shoot them before I shoot mysel.

Jane is a really masterpiece of AOR

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 23 December 2020 04:50 (three years ago) link

I'm going purely on singles here. JA singles...yeah, they just don't do much for me. JS has a more pseudo-prog + AM gold vibe that I can firmly get behind. 'Miracles'! 'With Your Love'! 'Count on Me'! 'Jane'! Hell, I'll even throw the Balin solo singles in there. 'FEED YOUR HEAD'? No thanks, Grace. I'll feed my mid-'70s coke habit instead, if you don't mind.

Wet Pretzels and Other Soggy Snacks (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 23 December 2020 05:02 (three years ago) link

(I guess, tbf, when I say Balin singles I'm really just talking about 'Hearts' here but I hold firm on my position nonetheless.)

Wet Pretzels and Other Soggy Snacks (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 23 December 2020 05:09 (three years ago) link

Fair enough, though JA weren’t really a singles band.

Oh yeah, I love "St. Charles".

They sold me a dream of Christmas (Sund4r), Wednesday, 23 December 2020 14:56 (three years ago) link

Jefferson Starship was a needed clean-up and reboot after the chaos and disorder of the Airplane's Bark and Long John Silver. The real test is, what do you think of Hot Tuna?

I've heard all the Blur albums, both by The Good The Bad and The Queen, and even the Albarn solo album, yet never felt a need to check out Gorillaz besides seeing a couple of videos. Something about "we're actually cartoon characters" clicks a big "NOPE" switch in my head.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 23 December 2020 15:03 (three years ago) link

I think I like all the big hits from the entire Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship continuum. I like their singers' voices.

I think I like all the big hits from the entire Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship continuum. I like their singers' voices.

I can't remember a single one other than "Somebody to Love" and "We Built This City." They might be the big 60s/70s band that's disappeared from the cultural landscape most completely.
