Hold up there buddy. Just a minute there. Hold your horses. Yeah I reckon there might have been a bit of a clear and obvious error there. Hold your horses yeah. Just uh, really getting vibes of a, like I said, a clear and obvious error with that one. Obviously you know it can't stand on that basis if it uh...we've got to just play it back but yeah, definitely getting reports of a clear and obvious error coming through. Will be letting you know what it is really soon, yeah

imo every set-piece into the box should be allowed to play out, and then pored over from seventeen camera angles by five different judges, who rank physical contact between players for illegality, and the outcome is a penalty at either end depending on who did more bad stuff. the process will last an economical fifteen minutes

Do all of the previous season's VAR reviews in one go during the close season and then update all the match results and final table like the Eurovision popular vote coming in imo

Imagine the fun of VAR Penalty Backlog day. Even Americans would like it
Manchester United Football Club... I have to tell you that you are officially ....the CHAMPIONS...of having been relegated from the English Premier League as a result of a bizarre series of minor infractions detected in the buildup to every so-called "goal" you scored this season

That decision may well have been technically correct based on Mwepu attempting to play the ball while offside, but taking five minutes to confirm you're disallowing the best non-Toney goal of the weekend after yesterday's ignominies is Bad Optics
VAR on the ropes; no doubt this is part of an accelerationist plot to restore a wild west where referees are at liberty to allow Man City and Newcastle infringements based on Personal Preference

What about the Aston Villa goal yesterday?
― and the worms, they entered his ass (Neanderthal), Sunday, 4 September 2022 15:37 (one year ago) link
Extremely annoying decision, but the defenders stopped at the whistle and and the keeper was having a half hearted grab at it with that in mind, so maybe not the nailed on Villa winner people are tempted to paint it as
― hiroyoshi tins in (Sgt. Biscuits), Sunday, 4 September 2022 15:53 (one year ago) link
Plus, if Villa had gone ahead, City would have magicked in three goals in the last ten, as they do whenever they are behind

Okay, no fan of Juve but this might be the worst of all time (it isn't in the video, which is already outrageous, but check the replies for why)
A dramatic ending between Juventus and Salernitana.Arkadiusz Milik thought he had scored a 96th-minute winner for the Old Lady, having come from 2-0 down to win 3-2...But the goal was ruled out through VAR and Milik was given a second yellow card for taking his shirt off. pic.twitter.com/Zvny3aTMIn— Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) September 11, 2022

terrible for fans at the game but fuck time wasting and fuck managers in the prem with big squads that can change half their outfield players during a game deciding to make 3 of their subs with only a couple of mins of nrml time remaining then complaining about player workload. yellow cards for time wasting should be accompanied by a free kick for the opposition anywhere they want it.
― oscar bravo, Wednesday, 9 August 2023 19:24 (nine months ago) link

time wasting only really bothers me when it's extreme (obv my judgement of how extreme it is depends on who it's being used against too)
but ludicrous amounts of stoppage time is always gonna annoy me, and i'm not convinced it does much to address time wasting either
― you're a sick man, Buddy Rich (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 21:23 (nine months ago) link
the problem I have is modern sports insistence on exactitude. these are games, this is not DNA testing to exonerate someone on Death Row. watching frame by frame advances to find the little .00000000012 millimeter the player was actually offside doesn't really fit the spirit of the rule (and I don't think people realize that some of their favorite goals of all time might have been call back in the current system).
same with official time-keeping. most people who are avid fans can usually guess the amount of stoppage time within a minute based on how many people scored and how many injuries and substitutions there were, but we don't demand second-by-second accuracy to demand every lost second be replayed.
sure, if someone milks 45 seconds during 3 minutes of stoppage and the ref doesn't compensate for that a little, that's ridiculous, but...at the same token, the team that is chasing the match is doing so because they failed to do the necessary in the previous 90 minutes, so they have some culpability there as well.
I hate what modern HD tv has done to all sports. at least with American football, it's a sport that stops all the time anyway, but nothing's worse than being at a free-flowing football match and have it stop for fucking 5 minutes so someone can watch a movie. and nobody wants 12 minutes of stoppage time!

― Ár an broc a mhic (darraghmac), Wednesday, 9 August 2023 21:44 (nine months ago) link
only thing nice I'll say is at least it isn't as mental as the NBA, which allowed refs to review three pointers from several minutes earlier and retroactively change the score.
i was at a game once, last few minutes, home team down like 3, and they reviewed a three pointer from several minutes earlier and determined it should have been a 2, so now they were down 4.
