Do any of you have Premium memberships, if not Commissioner's Circle?

I chose to pay for Premier the last time, but haven't really used any of the perks.

anatol_merklich, Thursday, 3 December 2020 16:02 (three years ago) link

My very very favorites are the ones where I truly don't know the answer but manage to reason my way to "the only thing it could be," like "ilium"

Also, I mean, HOW was "glory hole" not the MCW

The perks have never seemed compelling enough to justify the extra cost. Private rundles are theoretically intriguing, but I don't know that many people in LL beyond you guys, and everyone would have to be a Premium member to participate.

jaymc, Thursday, 3 December 2020 16:30 (three years ago) link

I usually pay for Commissioner's Circle, although I'm premier currently because I had a huge emergency expense right before it was time to renew - it's worth a lot more than $30 a year to me and I don't mind paying extra if I can afford to. Also I kinda like the player tracker, even if I don't really use an of the other premium features.

why do i always have my 5/6 days when the other person forfeits

They can feel it coming

A new vibration

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 3 December 2020 18:04 (three years ago) link

I haven't gotten a forfeit win since my rookie season, and the rest things are going, I wouldn't mind a couple.

Really annoyed that I turned a win into a tie by zeroing the Butler question, which my opponent missed even though he got the Le Guin question right from two seasons ago.

Stone Cold Steve Ostentatious (Leee), Saturday, 5 December 2020 16:02 (three years ago) link

dolly parton talking about her favorite book is the only reason i got the butler q

maura, Saturday, 5 December 2020 20:29 (three years ago) link

I heard someone else say that as well

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 5 December 2020 20:35 (three years ago) link

years of being too online have ruined me for novels but you should really read octavia buter maura

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 5 December 2020 21:22 (three years ago) link

This midseason classic: I got 8 right, which was enough to rep for C Sakura (nice!), and was in 69th percentile (nice nice!).

Stone Cold Steve Ostentatious (Leee), Monday, 7 December 2020 22:36 (three years ago) link

I yeah, I never paid attention to how it worked, I repped as well.

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 7 December 2020 22:43 (three years ago) link

Sigh at the 6 match winless streak I'm working on.

Stone Cold Steve Ostentatious (Leee), Tuesday, 8 December 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

Finally got a win yesterday, though it was against a poor guy who's had 15 (now 16) losses this season, none of which were forfeits.

Stone Cold Steve Ostentatious (Leee), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 21:28 (three years ago) link

you're welcome

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 21:32 (three years ago) link

Haha, but...

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 22:49 (three years ago) link

Can you guys guess what my wrong answer was for the James Brown question was?

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 December 2020 15:20 (three years ago) link

was it say it loud (i'm black and i'm proud)? bc that was my wrong answer that kept me from a 9(6). obviously i didn't read the question closely enough.

na (NA), Thursday, 10 December 2020 15:38 (three years ago) link

No, not quite.

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 December 2020 15:54 (three years ago) link

"Please Please Please." Figure the parenthesized part was "(Please Don't Go)"

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 December 2020 15:55 (three years ago) link

i also went with i'm black

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 10 December 2020 17:13 (three years ago) link

Somehow my opponent today -- in a C rundle -- has a QPct of 81.8%. See yall in the relegation zone!

Stone Cold Steve Ostentatious (Leee), Thursday, 10 December 2020 18:06 (three years ago) link

*waves hand*

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 10 December 2020 18:12 (three years ago) link

The key part of the James Brown question was "first-person sentence." So it had to start with "I."

I missed it, too, because I just couldn't think of any titles that fit the bill. Kicked myself when I saw the answer.

jaymc, Thursday, 10 December 2020 18:55 (three years ago) link

yes, that's what i missed by not reading closely enough. also i'm black and i'm proud would have been later than 1965.

na (NA), Thursday, 10 December 2020 19:02 (three years ago) link

i even got that it was first-person, i just didn't register that both parts of the name were first-person sentences

na (NA), Thursday, 10 December 2020 19:03 (three years ago) link

originally had Give It Up until i noticed first person. and yes, black and proud woulda been later but it didn't click for some reason

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 10 December 2020 19:44 (three years ago) link

Okay, I signed up for Player Tracker, it does seem kind of useful.

Not only did I miss 4 questions, my prediction was wrong, too -- I'm actually two spots above relegation.

Stone Cold Steve Ostentatious (Leee), Friday, 11 December 2020 17:22 (three years ago) link

Your Rundle is big, 36 players

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 December 2020 17:31 (three years ago) link

Yeah, which I take to mean that I have that much farther to fall. OTOH, we have another player in that same rundle who's in line for a promotion to B and is neck-and-neck for first place.

Stone Cold Steve Ostentatious (Leee), Friday, 11 December 2020 18:46 (three years ago) link

Yeah, I noticed

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 December 2020 18:59 (three years ago) link

I think I am the only one here is actually going to be relegated.

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 December 2020 20:48 (three years ago) link

I might actually make it back to A, mostly off the back of a forfeit win on a day when I only got two right

is right unfortunately (silby), Friday, 11 December 2020 20:50 (three years ago) link

My career in A is entirely without distinction

is right unfortunately (silby), Friday, 11 December 2020 20:50 (three years ago) link

not strictly LL-related but i finished 19th in the world quizzing championships this past weekend and earned the top scores in the entertainment and lifestyle categories, which i can only attribute to insane luck, including a music category that was much heavier on metal and eurovision than normal

something folks here might enjoy is the online quiz league pop solos competition, which is starting in january - it's pop culture-only live trivia via zoom; i've been playing in the inaugural OQLUSA team season and it's a ton of fun

the portentous pepper (govern yourself accordingly), Friday, 11 December 2020 21:43 (three years ago) link

I think I did that once. Maybe Tony Hightower was the host.

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 December 2020 22:03 (three years ago) link

The world quizzing I mean, congrats. Not the other thing I just looked at.

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 December 2020 22:06 (three years ago) link

I've got most of you in Player Tracker now, just because.

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 December 2020 22:07 (three years ago) link

yeah, i did it in NYC the last few years - i don't think tony hosted last year, it was at some random bar in the financial district

it's a lot less distracting to do this without a bunch of people downstairs loudly yelling at a soccer game, it turns out

the portentous pepper (govern yourself accordingly), Friday, 11 December 2020 22:11 (three years ago) link

I did it a few years ago on Stone Street, I think, in some Irish pub.

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 December 2020 22:16 (three years ago) link

i will probably squeeze by in the C rundle again, somewhere near the bottom. Increasingly clear this is my current level.

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 11 December 2020 22:17 (three years ago) link

I will be joining you there soon.

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 December 2020 22:18 (three years ago) link

I did WQC back in 2013, maybe? It was kind of an awkward scene, tbh.

Pleased to see that a Sri Lankan guy who I knew through my old job (he regularly submitted corrections to encyclopedia articles) was once again the top player in his country.

Sick drums and bugles fanfare! I've taken part every year since 2005 except this year, and I can say with confidence that is a truly great result. Didn't do it officially now bcz scared of being frustrated out of my mind by technical stuff that could go wrong. (Also the thing was held in 2004 before Norway got wind of it; but for that fact I might have done it just to keep a 100% attendance). But really, massive kudos!
