i haven't played control, and i liked RDR2, but i think the answer is control unless you really want to be a cowboy riding at sunset (which i did)

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:46 (three years ago) link

why not do both? both are cheap enough right now that you won't regret it too much if you don't like one

Nhex, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:48 (three years ago) link

though obviously I vote Control since I've played and enjoyed that one. i will probably get RDR 2 this sale but i've already been spending way too much on sales this month...

Nhex, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:48 (three years ago) link

RDR2 + Control dual playthrough concept - when arthur morgan goes to sleep, he dreams of control

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:51 (three years ago) link

whenever possible, we should be playing multiple games and integrating their stories

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:52 (three years ago) link

but not kingdom hearts

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:52 (three years ago) link

Cool cool I will get both

calstars, Friday, 27 November 2020 01:52 (three years ago) link

Tesco ('ssssssSSS') are doing games for really cheap at the moment: God of War for £8, Death Stranding for £20.

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Friday, 27 November 2020 13:17 (three years ago) link

i absolutely adored rdr2 fwiw. actually somewhat moving at times and i loved the slow pace and getting lost in the world, it can be incredibly relaxing

global tetrahedron, Friday, 27 November 2020 16:33 (three years ago) link

Sweet, I’m looking forward to it.
I started Control and eh, not sure about it. Played about a half hour - 45 mins, and it’s kind of a pretty generic shooter. My expectations may have been too high.
Also looking for a deal on cloudpunk, I have a feeling I’ll click with that one.

calstars, Friday, 27 November 2020 16:46 (three years ago) link

Keep on with Control. I did the same as you: played about 40 mins and figured I wasn't in the mood for a shooter, and didn't like some of the physics either, but it really opens up (or more accurately gets deeper) as you go. Very little generic about it after a couple of hours

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Friday, 27 November 2020 17:24 (three years ago) link

Cool, will do
Is the protagonist supposed to have a limp or is the animation for walking fast / running just kind of broken?

calstars, Friday, 27 November 2020 17:36 (three years ago) link

i got to the first boss in control and remembered why i don't generally go for action games like this lol

global tetrahedron, Friday, 27 November 2020 17:43 (three years ago) link

Xp ummm no? Its not something I'd noticed myself. How do you mean? The physics thing that annoyed me is that objects didn't really seem to have any weight to them. You walk into a tea trolley and it just falls over like it's made of paper. It stops being annoying quite soon after though, especially once you start gaining more powers, which is when the fame gets really satisfying and fun

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Friday, 27 November 2020 18:10 (three years ago) link

global tetrahedron yes it me

Ghost of Tsushima is $34 on Target. I'm waiting till that magic $20 price point.

Basic Chan Ho Park (Leee), Monday, 30 November 2020 23:34 (three years ago) link

might be a bit since it's still popular and got turned into a crossgen game

ciderpress, Monday, 30 November 2020 23:50 (three years ago) link

I'm ok with that, as I've got a fair number of long games from my BF haul (Fire Emblem, Persona 5 Royal).

Basic Chan Ho Park (Leee), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 00:32 (three years ago) link

imo the day when it’s $20 is when the sequel comes out, which will be exactly one iteration of improvement better than the original

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 02:31 (three years ago) link

nah, horizon has been 20 bucks for ages and the sequel is still a year away

ciderpress, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 02:37 (three years ago) link

First-party Sony titles don't stay high for long. It'll be $20 sooner than later, guessing by April.
Am tempted still, but good lord I've spent too much this past month already

Nhex, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 03:27 (three years ago) link

Pretty sure I bought the complete Horizon Zero Dawn for $10. $10 at, say, Best Buy right now, in fact.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 04:21 (three years ago) link

Completed God of War. It's not a particularly long game. Neither does it feel like a particularly BIG game compared to a few that I've played, despite the action taking place over several different realms. That said, there's so much to discover and the post-story game feels like a challenge in itself. Along with the action, I really admired its subtleties and puzzle elements.
I'm starting to get an almost sixth sense for sniffing out Odin's Ravens (there was one yesterday that was almost invisible against a bright blue sky, but I just knew it was there).
There's also something immensely satisfying about seeking out treasure chests and those buckets that hang from roofs and trees: In fact this is one of the most appealing parts of the game for me.
Likewise, the action and fighting parts of the game operate between slightly clunky and slow reaction times (which can be frustrating: I sometimes feel like I'm hitting block or attack and Kratos just kind of stands there getting whooped), but other times hitting the right combination of buttons at the right times can be devastating. Fights are often difficult, but it's rare that I'll need to attempt more than 3-4 tries on the hardest ones, which stops it dissolving into just a repetitive button-mashing frenzy.
I have to say the acting and scenery are some of the best I've seen in any game. Kratos and Atreus (also Mimir, Freya and Baldur) are truly believable, complex characters.
The storyline did confuse me a little at points. There's a lot of lore, and often I'd be concentrating on paddling my boat in the right direction and unable to concentrate on Mimir and Atreus whipping through some essential exposition points.
Anyway, a great game. Now to deck some Valkyries

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 12:12 (three years ago) link

Yeah, I stopped after I got one or two of them, who iirc were much harder than the rest of the game.

I also think a lot of God of War is funny. There's some great writing, especially the talking head.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 13:46 (three years ago) link

I've just bought Control after catching up on this thread, any tips for a noob?

(the one with 3 L's) (Willl), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 13:54 (three years ago) link

Willl, let me know how you get on. I would say just go with it: It's a fairly linear game, but the fun is in the discovery, the weirdness, the uncanniness of it and slowly pieceing together what the hell is going on. I don't want to spoil it, but it's very much a Metroid-style game that lets you acquire really quite impressive abilities which open up the game a whole lot. It really doesn't spoon feed you though, so PM me if you have any Qs

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 14:18 (three years ago) link

dog latin is spot on. I would add - run and gun as much as you need, and do any Artifacts of Power missions ASAP. Takes a while to get any defensive abilities.

Nhex, Tuesday, 1 December 2020 14:26 (three years ago) link

Thanks :) Looking forward to something with a plot after a month of caning Rocket League and PES 2021, and somehow getting worse at both!

(the one with 3 L's) (Willl), Tuesday, 1 December 2020 14:35 (three years ago) link

I'm about 12 hours into Control now, what a great game - I see what you meant about it being an uncanny Metroid. Really enjoying piecing together the backstory (and flinging filing cabinets around with my mind).

I think the difficulty is pitched just right as well, challenging but hasn't provoked a rage quit yet. Good recommendation :)

(the one with 3 L's) (Willl), Monday, 7 December 2020 11:19 (three years ago) link

I almost forgot I bought it when it was last on sale. Whenever I finish Bloodborne (sooner rather than later) I think I want to play the latest Ori, the maybe try Carrion, then ... maybe a mix of Control and RDR2? I have the latter on disc, so it'll likely live in the machine, but Control I bought digitally, which makes it easier to switch around, I think.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 7 December 2020 13:57 (three years ago) link

one of the things i'm actually most looking forward to in the next gen of consoles is that ability to switch between multiple frozen game states. Not sure how/if it works on PS5 but it looked great in those XSX previews

Nhex, Monday, 7 December 2020 14:13 (three years ago) link

i think the PS5 version is less save-state-y and more about booting directly to developer-specified waypoints at the start of levels/missions rather than the title screen

ciderpress, Monday, 7 December 2020 14:21 (three years ago) link

one of the things i'm actually most looking forward to in the next gen of consoles is that ability to switch between multiple frozen game state

Amazing that such a basic thing that's been thrown in with emulators for decades is seen as a next gen advancement and even then it's still going to be a not-quite-save-state.

Cyberpunk 2077... so this is actually happening? Will it be worth it on PS4?

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Monday, 7 December 2020 16:10 (three years ago) link

Probably, but I can wait on that one

Nhex, Monday, 7 December 2020 16:16 (three years ago) link

witcher 3 was a mess at release, this will probably be worse if the number of times its been delayed is any indication

ciderpress, Monday, 7 December 2020 16:27 (three years ago) link

save states are just writing the memory to disk which when you're emulating old consoles that had like 128kb memory is trivial but on contemporaneous consoles it translates to a decent chunk of hard drive space per save

ciderpress, Monday, 7 December 2020 16:33 (three years ago) link

I get that I'm just being all "technological advances that took a five generations to get worse"

don't mind me

Clean-up on ILX (onimo), Monday, 7 December 2020 17:31 (three years ago) link

I figure cyberpunk will be mostly playable by xmas so I can wait to then

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 8 December 2020 01:21 (three years ago) link

word going around that it has a dangerously seizure-inducing sequence in it so don't play it unless you're sure you don't have epilepsy

ciderpress, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 14:21 (three years ago) link

We got a PS5 now, trying out all the games to compare (as we got a new 4K telly recently). RDR2, No Mans Sky and Destiny 2 all look bloody marvellous.

Haptic feedback controller is neat too.

one month passes...

Picked up Hellblade (Senua's Sacrifice) and Detroit: Become Human (which came with Heavy Rain, didn't realise).

Just started Hellblade and it's mighty impressive, especially for an indie game. The presentation and aesthetics are first class. The puzzles are a bit annoying and the fight sections are rudimentary, but for some reason it really doesn't matter.

still have a feeling of revulsion every time I read the words "Heavy Rain", pretty good going for a game I played 10 years ago

I've never played a Quantic game, but the main dude there is a creep and a hack, from what I've read.

i like that vid of the heavy rain scene where they fail every QTE. never played the game

ciderpress, Wednesday, 27 January 2021 01:48 (three years ago) link

i played Heavy Rain & Final Fantasy XIII one after the other
never has my faith in gaming been called into question more
