(Sad footnote: Unfortunately the combination of warm lunchmeat, high heat, humidity, and naked people led this shop to be closed by health departments within days of opening.)

How about a dark reimagining of Worzel Gummidge?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000csng/worzel-gummidge-series-1-1-the-scarecrow-of-scatterbrook

Siblings Susan and John arrive at Scatterbrook Farm, home of the Braithwaites, to little fanfare. It's been a poor harvest and their hosts aren't thrilled to have two amateur farmhands around the place during such lean times. No-one on Scatterbrook Farm is more troubled by the late harvest than walking, talking scarecrow Worzel Gummidge. Worzel is strictly forbidden from talking to humans, but after mistaking John and Susan for fellow scarecrows, his game is up.

Worzel realises he will only save the day by going against some of his better instincts. He draws on the youthful exuberance of John and Susan, seeks the wisdom of his long-estranged Aunt Sally, and negotiates a testy deal with the frightful rooks and crows of Scatterbrook. With the help of the mystical Tree of Tree and his pet robin, Winter George, Worzel orchestrates a gathering of his fellow scarecrows on the night of the next harvest moon. Can he save the day?

MAGA Claus
PG-13, 82 minutes

Christine Claus is a twentysomething Brooklynite. Like many millennials, the 2020 election has put her at odds with her baby boomer parents. Unlike her peers, however, Christine’s famous father has the power to reverse the election! Follow Christine as she journeys home for the holidays for the first time in years to prevent Santa Claus from colluding with Donald Trump to reverse the results of the race.

I just watched that Professor and The Madman (Oxford dictionary saga) on Netflix, it had a pretty good cast (Steve Coogan, Eddy Marsan, Sean Penn among others) and Mel Gibson's performance wiped the floor with all of them

unpopular opinion: Mel did okay as Hamlet

coup coup kajoo (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 23 December 2020 15:28 (three years ago) link

yeah, but hamlet is hardly as challenging or dynamic a role as santa

treeship., Wednesday, 23 December 2020 15:29 (three years ago) link

this is the big leagues we're talking about

treeship., Wednesday, 23 December 2020 15:29 (three years ago) link

santa can't be outwardly morose. he needs to convey all of that with just a touch of his nose.

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 23 December 2020 15:35 (three years ago) link

need to say "ho, ho, ho" and mean "get thee to a nunnery"

kniphofia face (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 23 December 2020 15:37 (three years ago) link

well that is what the screenplay is all about, how santa's outward "jolliness" is really a defense mechanism and even, sometimes, a form of aggression. he is very often unfeeling and unresponsive: unwilling to adapt to a changing world or accept that his daughter has grown up.

treeship., Wednesday, 23 December 2020 15:45 (three years ago) link
