I love the G train, but it won't get it you that close to dressler.

mizzell, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah fuck that. My experience with the G is that it's as good as any other train! The cumulative hours spent over the last decade waiting for the F or the NR have perhaps jaded me, the only train I feel good about catching these days is the 123, for frequency.

Oh sorry xpostesses.

I guess the walk from the Broadway stop isn't too bad, but it feels long.

mizzell, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

max, not sure how you feel about vegan food, but my friend (who is a meat-eater) loves little lad's basket. the salad bar is 3.99/lb. the address is 120 broadway, but i think it might be below street level or something weird like that.

for general vietnamese food, i like nam son, cong ly, and tu do. for bahn mi, nothing beats ba xuyen in sunset park. it's truly spectacular.

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Why do people complain about the G train so much? Is it cause their only time using it is late nites and weekends going to williamsburg/greepoint

mizzell, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:07 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah the 2 3 was always good to me. someone was telling me it's really the C that has issues.

yeah i think that is why, miz.

Surmounter, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:07 (fifteen years ago) link

nothing beats ba xuyen in sunset park
this is true. the best in chinatown, though, is the one in the back of the jewelry store on mott st.

mizzell, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:08 (fifteen years ago) link

once we got this thing at ba xuyen that was like a piece of french toast with a shrimp battered in to the bread. they've got some great finger foods in addition to the sandwiches.

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:09 (fifteen years ago) link

When are they going to fit the indicators that say how long the train they will be to all lines?

Christopher Blix Hammer (Ed), Monday, 6 October 2008 14:13 (fifteen years ago) link

im coming from stuyvesant ave in bed stuy--i usually take the A to/from manhattan and its pretty regular so maybe im spoiled (ive also never had issues with the C! altho the past few weekends theyve been rerouting the A to the F which makes getting home from downtown manhattan a pain). i can walk to the J but its a bit of a hike... i guess my anti-G prejudice is due to only taking it on the wknds and nights. i could also take the A to b'way junction (1 stop) and then transfer to the L but that seems like a loooong ride on the L.

max, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:14 (fifteen years ago) link

actually you know i could just take the 46 bus from malcolm x

max, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:14 (fifteen years ago) link

lol really i just want a train that goes from greenpoint to grand to myrtle to utica a/c to utica 3/4... i should start a thread "what nyc subway line to you wish existed"

max, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:14 (fifteen years ago) link

oh - the bar/tavern room at gramercy tavern might be a good option for the birthday dinner.

wtc/wall st area lunch - pret, financier, klatch, alfanoose, tajin, the little bigger place, diwan-e-khaas, barbarini, ruben's empanadas, zaitzeff, zigolini's (long walk). in the wfc (and with take out): yushi, southwest ny (salads, quesadillas), johnney's fish grill (tuna sandwich).

gabbneb, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:19 (fifteen years ago) link

The C has issues because it's a local train and serves a lot of kind of poor neighborhoods in BKlyn so no one gives a shit about it. I waited through MORE service problems in my 3-4 years on that train, than every other train for a decade combined. Stupid shit, like trains going out of service at rush hour because ONE DOOR somewhere on the train wouldn't close. Actually it was door problems a lot, which is prob also b/c people hold them open so much. But the C trains are old and crappy.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Monday, 6 October 2008 14:25 (fifteen years ago) link

also (tho kinda out of the way), samantha's ny

gabbneb, Monday, 6 October 2008 14:30 (fifteen years ago) link

max if you're taking the a to b'way junction you can just get on the j instead of the l -- it's less stops. of course, the j is the universe's worst train so you know it might just depend on whether you prefer to take forever while sitting inside a train, or take forever waiting outside for one to show up.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 6 October 2008 15:58 (fifteen years ago) link

(seriously i think they've significantly increased service on the g, btw. i haven't had a problem with it since i moved)

(i think you're right about the g, ally. still the same old shitty cars, but the service is a lot better.)

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 15:59 (fifteen years ago) link

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link

also, those lamb skewers from the street vendor are so good - so spicy and fatty.

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 16:22 (fifteen years ago) link

sweetwater used to be a great dive bar, now it seems like a ho-hum new american bistro.

if you like naeng myun (the cold noodle dish), this place is great: http://www.chow.com/places/3295
they make their own noodles, i think. dumplings were also very good. not as good as the dumplings they make at the snack hut attached to hanyan mart at 151st and northern, though. their kimchee mandu are incredible. you can also get a really unexpected snack food there, but i'm not going to ruin the surprise.

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link

lol went to 5 of the places on that map - couldnt find the gloden mall tho :(

xp

joe six pak (ice crӕm), Monday, 6 October 2008 16:31 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, and there's a bon chon chicken and kyo chon and god knows how many other fried chicken joints. there are so many places along northern blvd that you can just wander around and stuff yourself. you need to use the lirr, though.

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 6 October 2008 17:05 (fifteen years ago) link

sweetwater is ok, I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there

and yeah it was better as a bar

I'm glad the G train is better, my beef was pretty much what Mizzell said, if I ever rode it it was to try to get to Warsaw on a Saturday night or something, it would be running in sections and take for fucking everrrr

dmr, Monday, 6 October 2008 17:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Sweetwater has good onion rings. Or they did four years ago when I last ate there.

ian, Monday, 6 October 2008 17:28 (fifteen years ago) link

mmm, i just had one of those lamb skewers for lunch in elmhurst and passed by a malaysian place called Taste Good, which had a very positive Sietsema review in the window. anyone been there?

mizzell, Monday, 6 October 2008 19:02 (fifteen years ago) link

lol nice yelp review asshole
(2 stars)i don't think it's great since i have no memory of being there but i know i have since i always bring back a menu or business card.

mizzell, Monday, 6 October 2008 19:07 (fifteen years ago) link

BAHAHAHAHAHA

Surmounter, Monday, 6 October 2008 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

finally had one of those spicy cumin lamb hamburgers at the flushing mall basement. Pretty damn good.

good find though a few weeks back, walking down broadway in elmhurst (past tastes good) almost at Queens BLVD there's a big asian market with food service, they had these egg and scalion pancakes that were amazing.

dan selzer, Monday, 6 October 2008 21:43 (fifteen years ago) link

attn max: have you been to peaches on lewis and macdonough? it's right down street from our old apt and i just read a review of it (it is brand new), i was wondering if it was worth going back to the neighb for. it is by smoke joint ppl.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 14:30 (fifteen years ago) link

aw man whyd u move, my girl lives on stuyvesant we coulda been bed stuy buddies

max, Tuesday, 7 October 2008 14:34 (fifteen years ago) link

n e way this is what i said upthred:

"peaches" in bed stuy has got some good nu-americana or whatever you wanna call it--good soul food/comfort dishes made w/ local organic ingredients. waiter and hostess were really nice; ricotta was delicious. good fries and sandwiches.

u should check out peaches surmo--theyre working out some kinks but as an experience its great--and when the food is on, its on

i might check out their brunch today aksh

the smoke joint guys place in bed-stuy, peaches, is worth a trip on the A--in particular for their salads and veggie dishes, and the pearl pasta.
