I need to watch Cronenberg's kid's movie. I may tonight.

Patriotic Goiter (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 15:08 (three years ago) link

why are movies still opening in theaters for runs before making them available on streaming services?

Isn't there an Oscars thing where streaming-only films aren't eligible? Or have they changed this?

emil.y, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 15:14 (three years ago) link

They're eligible.

On average, this critic grades 8.3 points lower than other critics (Eric H.), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 15:33 (three years ago) link

I need to watch Cronenberg's kid's movie.

Read this as "Cronenberg's kids movie," which I must say sounds tantalizing.

Langdon Alger Stole the Highlights (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 15:36 (three years ago) link

they've suspended that - if a movie had a scheduled cinema run but came out on streaming due to the pandemic, it's eligible. also, movies that come out in cinemas in NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, or Atlanta are now eligible: I think this change may be intended to be permanent.

Is there just an insane number of horror movies out this year, or are they just the things that are easy to get/actually released in pandemic world

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:20 (three years ago) link

This sucks without Morbs.

I totally read it like this as well, and I agree.

emil.y, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:30 (three years ago) link

Also thanks for clearing up the Oscars thing, sic and Eric.

emil.y, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:30 (three years ago) link

I liked Wild Goose Lake but preferred Black Coal, Thin Ice by a fair bit

it bangs for thee (Simon H.), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:33 (three years ago) link

How do you watch things like Kajillionaire? I’m really interested in new movies in general, but I can’t imagine paying $19.99 to rent a movie to watch in my fucking house.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 19 November 2020 03:25 (three years ago) link

you live in a city that has it screening at drive-ins

if you do want to watch it in your fucking house but don't want to pay for it, you have a computer

@oneposter (💹) (sic), Thursday, 19 November 2020 03:41 (three years ago) link

I watched Money Plane last week if that counts. I think it gave me a lobotomy.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 19 November 2020 03:44 (three years ago) link

Weathering With You was released last year but I think the wider release was 2020 in some parts of the world? Anyway, I only just watched it. The worst part about it is that it hits similar beats to Makato Shinkai's previous film, Your Name, while not being as good, but it's still enjoyable and shows off some spectacular animation

Bloody Nose Empty Pockets & Bacurau are the best 2020 releases I've seen.

Also decent:
Siberia
I'm thinking of ending things
The Sheriff

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 19 November 2020 11:40 (three years ago) link

yeah I've been hearing a lot about Bacurau. it's like Mandy, but in the outback?

flappy bird, Thursday, 19 November 2020 17:12 (three years ago) link

I watched it night before last. I don't see a Mandy comparison, but I did think it could have been a straight adaptation of the early Samuel Delany novel They Fly at Ciron.

scampo-phenique (WmC), Thursday, 19 November 2020 17:47 (three years ago) link

It's generally good except for the cinematography, which looks a bit 80s-camcorder.

scampo-phenique (WmC), Thursday, 19 November 2020 17:48 (three years ago) link

Not as hallucinatory as Mandy. Not to give too much away but I went in knowing nothing about the plot but it does start out as a rural social drama about political corruption and then takes a hard turn into more genre-y waters

Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Thursday, 19 November 2020 18:08 (three years ago) link

Since this is a general movie thread and not entirely dedicated to the best stuff, it might be worth mentioning the Mandy-adjacent pre-pandemic trifecta of suck: Daniel Isn't Real, Come To Daddy, and Color Out Of Space.

billstevejim, Friday, 20 November 2020 16:37 (three years ago) link

Yeah Color out of Space came here for like a week back in February, I missed it. Definitely post about anything that came out in 2020/2019

flappy bird, Friday, 20 November 2020 18:10 (three years ago) link

Color out of Space was okay!

Bidh boladh a' mhairbh de 'n láimh fhalaimh (dowd), Friday, 20 November 2020 18:18 (three years ago) link

I thought all three of those were Jan/Feb but Daniel Isn't Real might have come out around December 2019. Close enough lol

billstevejim, Friday, 20 November 2020 22:01 (three years ago) link

It completes the Elijah Wood through line as he produced the other two.

Sorry, he produced DIR and COOS and starred in CTD.

come to daddy is no good?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 20 November 2020 22:30 (three years ago) link

I thought it was dumb but I can't speak for everyone.

billstevejim, Friday, 20 November 2020 23:12 (three years ago) link

I don't recommend I Used to Go Here

flappy bird, Friday, 20 November 2020 23:22 (three years ago) link

I liked Come to Daddy

Scare Me, available on Shudder - not actually a horror film but rather a dark comedy about a dude going to a far off cabin to write and finding that the cabin next door is owned by a successful female author. They tell each other scary stories, but it's not an anthology film where it cuts to anything - the stories are sold entirely on the actor's performances.

quite angry at seeing Bacurau described as "Mandy in the outback" itt >:(

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 16 December 2020 11:21 (three years ago) link

Having now actually seen "Shithouse" I can highly recommend it as a sweet-minded, low key but ultimately moving (sort of) romantic comedy, with a couple of great performances and funny bits. RIYL "Palm Springs" but didn't feel like it necessarily needed the sci-fi artifice, though that still makes it sound slicker than it is when it's clearly pretty low budget and closer to Linklater and later mumblecore stuff. I'm sure I said it elsewhere but I think it would have been a sleeper indie "hit" if not for the stupid title. Might still be, who knows.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 December 2020 13:14 (three years ago) link

A Sun, a Taiwanese film by Chung Mong-hong is pretty amazing
