i have come from afar, to visit the thread where lives this grinder, of which so much hath been spoken.

I have had the same coffee grinder since 2003, I legitimately have no idea what I will do when it goes.

Coffee actually came out better this morning than it has in a while, p sure this was just my grinder's way of telling me it needed to be cleaned.

lol

Yeah clean your grinders folks there’s bits in there

is right unfortunately (silby), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 17:26 (three years ago) link

those are the flavor crystals and you should make a pot of coffee using just the residue

mh, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 17:28 (three years ago) link

you gotta SEASON your grinder

My Breville smart grinder jammed a few weeks ago and was making some very ugly noises. I was extremely worried because I love that grinder. Luckily I was able to take it apart and found that a pebble somehow had made its way into my bag of coffee beans. Once I cleared it out, it started working fine again, but I just feel lucky the grinder blades weren't damaged.

Ah, coffee... I've made a few tweaks to my home brewing recipe. Slightly less grinds per cup and letting the water cool a bit more from the boil.

My FIL got me a bunch of coffees from Tandem coffee roasters and occasionally gets me more (he has some kind of ordering discount through a friend). They're really damn good, and it's funny how spoiled I've gotten where it's like "Alright, I'm out of Tandem, I GUESS I can use that Stumptown Hair Bender I have left over"

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 3 February 2021 19:43 (three years ago) link

Anyone have a subscription with Craft Coffee? Good Wirecutter review and they have $6.99 bags fresh roasted (if you do 4 bags every 2/4 weeks).

Does anyone else buy the Fair trade/organic from Aldi? Tbh it's so cheap that I doubt i'll ever buy other coffee ever again.

Seems Kalita Wave filters are out of stock everywhere, unless you want to order from Japan and pay $22 just for shipping.

o. nate, Thursday, 4 March 2021 16:41 (three years ago) link

maybe here: https://crema-coffee.com/shop2/kalita-wave-filters ?

wmlynch, Friday, 5 March 2021 02:03 (three years ago) link

I found a coffee shop in Maryland with an online store that had them listed in stock. Fingers crossed until they arrive.

o. nate, Friday, 5 March 2021 02:20 (three years ago) link

had that same problem with chemex filters several months ago... good luck!

wmlynch, Friday, 5 March 2021 19:41 (three years ago) link

I have Hario V60 as a backup, but I find it harder to get a consistent extraction with that.

o. nate, Friday, 5 March 2021 19:57 (three years ago) link

Luckily we're far from release

I now take coff with the same serious with which I took booze. Costs me a bit less, but not by much given my high-end cappuccino habit.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 21 March 2021 22:53 (three years ago) link

I think the trick with brewing for two with the Hario V60 is using only like 16g per person and a medium-coarse grind. That makes enough for two 10oz mugs.

o. nate, Sunday, 21 March 2021 23:43 (three years ago) link

Does it really matter if you use cold water vs room temp?

calstars, Thursday, 25 March 2021 19:06 (three years ago) link

Before you boil it? I can't see how that would matter.

o. nate, Saturday, 27 March 2021 03:01 (three years ago) link

In an effort to reduce my cof consumption a little while also improving the quality of my experience, I got myself a one-cup Kalita Wave, so that I have to make a cup each time I want one instead of mindlessly drinking an entire press pot every day. It's way smaller than I expected. Still waiting on the filters to arrive, will report back.

Also discovered this place for beans, which is fantastic (notwithstanding terrible branding): https://www.coffeelabs.com/

^^ wrong thread obv, but reducing my coffee intake to just one cup in the morning was the best thing i ever did

Marry and Neghim (darraghmac), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 09:08 (three years ago) link

Feeling the one cup a day thing and I think I've posted about it here before, too. These days I'm doing a cup when I wake up, then a half right around lunch. I nurse each serving in a Yeti for an hour or so. It's still too much caffeine, but that first cup just isn't satisfying enough. It definitely hinders more than helps my focus as well. It's gotten to where I've been on the fence about buying more coffee gear because I'm not certain I'll still be drinking it in a year or two. Like, I really want this $299 burr grinder, but that's a hard cost to justify for a cup a day and considering weaning out caffeine entirely.

beard papa, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 19:03 (three years ago) link

If I’m drinking at home, which is usually the case, I have one cup when I wake up and one at 3 pm. In both cases it’s not uncommon to still be sipping on the same cup two hours later. If drinking out, it takes me about an hour to make it through a 12 oz with milk.

calstars, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 19:43 (three years ago) link

should i do a poll about how many times it is acceptable to microwave the same cup of coffee

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 20:03 (three years ago) link

I always imagine it messes up the milk

calstars, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 20:49 (three years ago) link

I mean, do as you please but I haven't been able to find a way to reheat coffee that doesn't make it taste bad to me. I've tried low power microwaving and that slightly improves the result but it's ultimately still bad. Not gonna say I haven't done it when I didn't feel like making an entirely new pot.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 20:59 (three years ago) link

That's probably more because the coffee is old than that it's being re-heated. Especially if it got old sitting on the maker's heating plate.

nickn, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 21:22 (three years ago) link

I'm currently on one 10oz mug in the morning and another usually in the afternoon. Sometimes I'll replace the afternoon cup with an espresso drink or a pot of tea.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 21:26 (three years ago) link

Day 1 of the Kalita experiment: my theory about it reducing my consumption is working so far, it's almost 11am and I haven't gone for a second cup yet, and feeling much more focused and less jittery. Also it was delicious. I think I used a little more grinds than I needed -- I was skeptical that so little would do the trick, but it came out very strong even by my standards.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 1 April 2021 14:52 (three years ago) link

is there any diff between Kalita and hario?

flopson, Thursday, 1 April 2021 22:01 (three years ago) link

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 1 April 2021 23:50 (three years ago) link

i'm a savage and i microwave my coffee every other day. in fact i look forward to it when i get up and realize i will have coffee in 90 seconds instead of waiting for water to boil.
