There’s a reply on there suggesting it’s Andrea Oliver and a band she formed or was ‘involved in’ after Rip Rig + Panic. The band, Kalimba, are mentioned on her WP page, described as ‘African inspired’. There’s an entry for a band of that name in something called Rockmine, some sort of online music encyclopedia, where it lists the five members of the band. I can’t find any pictures of them, nor any other mentions. Nothing on Discogs that I could find (including no mention under Andrea Oliver). Seems a bit hard to believe such a band would never have released anything. Other members were (from ‘Rockmine’ page) ‘Guy Batey - bass; Pete Dungerian [must be spelled wrong as no Google results] - guitar, harmonica, saxophone; Andy Norton - guitar; Andrea Oliver - vocals; Tintin - drums’. I suppose you could say the guy on the left looks a bit like the character Tintin. But the whole thing might be a giant red herring.

Not heard of Kalimba before, but it might not have been the best choice of name considering that Kalima may already have been on the indie jazz funk scene by then
― kites aren't fun (NickB), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:31 (three years ago) link
Kalimba is a musical instrument. I see Kalima was named after a track by Elvin Jones. 'Kalimba' is a popular choice of name: on Discogs there are about 13 bands or artists called that. None of them correspond to the one in question.
― dubmill, Tuesday, 17 November 2020 17:40 (three years ago) link
I thought the Kalimba name was familiar but then realised I was thinking of Kalima.Almost certainly at least one of these people ended up playing in a band that released something on Acid Jazz, possibly a lone track on a compilation.

hmmm. i was convinced it wasn't Andrea Oliver but perhaps it is. (sorry Jed)

either guy in hat / cap are a shoo in for being on that lone track on an Acid Jazz comp.

Tall guy in the broad-brimmed hat absolutely reeks of fretless bass

The one at the back looks like Bruce Wooley
But seeing as none of the others look like Thomas Dolby...

Middle Mullet Man looks a bit like Rolo McGinty, which made me think of the Woodentops (who were also fond of hats) but this ain't them...

does anyone have a clue about where they might be? If it's Kalimba, they were from Brighton - could be that some kind of pier/entertainment park location?
― StanM, Wednesday, 18 November 2020 16:35 (three years ago) link
i'm in brighton but i don't recognise the location tbh. the high roof and the good light make me think they're in a railway station or similar? outdoors but not quite outside

Probably heralded in an old I. D or Face magazine.Look like they would be an upcoming band of the month like.

Will be really funny when it's discovered they're not a band but the cast of some kitchen sink coming of age play. That or the undercover mod squad du jour Acid Jazz squad?

Wondered if it might be a photo of one member of a bunch of different bands, for a "scene round-up" type article.

It’s not hard too find pictures of Inflo (Sault) but there’s not much:
Inflo and I spent the last couple of years producing the new @michaelkiwanuka album. The first song "You Ain't the Problem" featured on the the updated playlist. https://t.co/sOR36hkqmd(we see you Kennie Takahashi) pic.twitter.com/FPWGf7it8Y— Danger Mouse Jukebox (@DangerMouseJuke) August 19, 2019

A few years back my partner discovered this album because it contains a song with the same name as a @fotc song (Feel Inside and Stuff Like That). Maybe one of my music nerd friends can solve the mystery before the year ends. Like @tcarmody or @keyescore https://t.co/1XCbsgrxEt— Bethany Klein (@bethanylklein) December 23, 2020

My theory: the artist name & album/song titles are just mis-tags which is causing most of the confusion. I'd focus more on the actual lyrics to id the artist, which is basically just a bedroom demo?

is there a general thread for bands looking stylish? i just found this picture of Dislocation Dance and it really needs to go somewhere

I think all the song titles are taken from 2012 songs, lol.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 17:01 (three years ago) link
How would the album's title and songs be mistagged? I don't know how this stuff works.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 17:02 (three years ago) link
Code being broken? Possibly unheard iLoveMakonnen (?) demos?
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 8 January 2021 17:09 (three years ago) link
MP3s have metadata and some infamous music software programs with v. poor database resolution have been known to haphazardly reassign various fields in the metadata.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 8 January 2021 17:09 (three years ago) link
Like this is the likely where the artist/"album" name comes from (a karaoke track of the Nicki song):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J18_g8dY8oA
It appears the OP demo's metadata got replaced by this (and various other 2012 hits) metadata.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 8 January 2021 17:11 (three years ago) link
We actually had a thread on ILM/Noize about MP3-mistagging during the filesharing heyday but I can't find it.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 8 January 2021 17:12 (three years ago) link
Gah, just heard this classic but minor new wave track whose artist is totally slipping my mind. Essentially in the power pop zone, no synths that I recall, has a chorus that goes "that's what all the people say" or "that's what other people say." Sounds like it could be 1979 or early '80s, totally brain farting away from an answer.
