Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:04 (three years ago) link

na (NA), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:15 (three years ago) link

there's always a 9/6 in the banana stand

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:34 (three years ago) link

lol

Indieland Phil and Indieland Don (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:38 (three years ago) link

That's the only one I missed.

Indieland Phil and Indieland Don (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 17 November 2020 16:38 (three years ago) link

9(6) yesterday for me! not counting minileagues obv, this is only my third sixpack in 11 seasons (I've had a 9(5) as well). yaaaaaay!

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 19:10 (three years ago) link

i lost on a 3/3 vs 7/3 yesterday, annoyedface.emoji

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 19:24 (three years ago) link

I was gifted a 3 on the Eswatini question even though I made explicit mention of it in the Djibouti thread.

I want to luhbahguh babum gum (Leee), Wednesday, 18 November 2020 19:25 (three years ago) link

Which was enough to give me a tie instead of a loss.

how many days in a row can I get 5 out of 6 and lose I ask you

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 19 November 2020 14:51 (three years ago) link

It's happened to me the last two days!

(Annoyed at myself because I literally typed in Raphael and then erased it and put Donizetti, who isn't even an artist.)

jaymc, Thursday, 19 November 2020 15:02 (three years ago) link

Never delete your first answer and replace it with something less famous is the lesson o keep learning over and over and not remembering somehow

is right unfortunately (silby), Thursday, 19 November 2020 15:05 (three years ago) link

Yup. I think changing the answer is OK if there is actual logic behind it, but not because "this kinda sounds right?"

jaymc, Thursday, 19 November 2020 15:49 (three years ago) link

yeah, i did that with raphael/michaelangelo

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 November 2020 15:49 (three years ago) link

raphael is my stock answer for anything involving italian renaissance painting; finally it paid off

mookieproof, Thursday, 19 November 2020 15:57 (three years ago) link

cowabunga dude

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 19 November 2020 18:57 (three years ago) link

btw is there some reason those prizes are specific to the newlywed game? idgi

mookieproof, Friday, 20 November 2020 23:11 (three years ago) link

yeah that was terrible. also i voted for The Price Is Right, which is correct.

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 November 2020 23:16 (three years ago) link

I don't think the prizes themselves are notable. The clue was the phrase "special prizes chosen just for the winners."

I was all set to submit "The Price Is Right," but that phrase kept nagging at me, and "The Newlywed Game" came to mind. It was a guess, but it turned out to be a good one.

Okay, I will spill the beans. It was a lot of work but I really enjoyed helping write the 60s Music recaps.

I said "The Price is Right" but the crucial clue is that it was an all-expenses paid cruise FOR TWO, i.e. the couple. Good question!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 21 November 2020 03:16 (three years ago) link

Learned League really makes you realize you don't know what other people know. I thought Flannery O'Connor was a gimme but wrestled with mimosa; I got them both but I really wasn't sure about mimosa. And like 90% of people got that right!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 21 November 2020 03:17 (three years ago) link

Yes, defense is a mug’s game. I thought everyone would get the game show except me, hah. Also thought Fatima might be easy but was hoping more people would fall into the Leila trap.

Indieland Phil and Indieland Don (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 21 November 2020 03:22 (three years ago) link

Think people who are really into it maybe have a better idea of what is a “Pavlov” or things like that.

Indieland Phil and Indieland Don (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 21 November 2020 03:25 (three years ago) link

an all-expenses paid cruise FOR TWO

idk, it's not like showcase showdowns suggested you go on cruises or live on a camping trailer by yourself? feel like there was a general assumption that all game show contestants were married

if the newlywed game adjusted its prizes according to whether it thought the winners would better appreciate a BC cruise or camper, then okay i had no idea

mookieproof, Saturday, 21 November 2020 04:12 (three years ago) link

Yeah, it wasn’t quite enough to hang one’s hat on. There is a thing about looking for those kind of clues or ins, but this one was a little too, um, subtle.

Indieland Phil and Indieland Don (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 21 November 2020 04:22 (three years ago) link

I put Canadian Jeopardy

Indieland Phil and Indieland Don (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 21 November 2020 04:28 (three years ago) link

Now I remember that for the ML question about “Blue Moon” we spent a little time discussing the wording of such a hint which ended up being “The Marcels stood alone atop the Billboard charts.” I suggested changing it to “The Marcels were seen standing alone,” which sounding more like the lyric, but somebody thought that would be a gimmie. The get rate was 30%

Indieland Phil and Indieland Don (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 21 November 2020 04:35 (three years ago) link

Like some hints are just “passing” as clues, kind of mugging and grimacing but not really quite acknowledging they are actual hints.

Indieland Phil and Indieland Don (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 21 November 2020 04:46 (three years ago) link

lol i'd have gotten 'blue moon' if the clue had been 'clapton solo ripoff' but i have literally never heard of the marcels

anyway the obvious answer is that you should do (absurdly difficult) one-days by yourself

mookieproof, Saturday, 21 November 2020 04:52 (three years ago) link

How did you know that was my plan?

Indieland Phil and Indieland Don (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 21 November 2020 04:56 (three years ago) link

Never noticed or knew about that solo ripoff. Anyway the lead smith on that quiz was much younger than everyone else and was really conscientious about controlling the difficulty, starting it off with a 50% get rate in the beginning and then slowly tightening the screws.

Indieland Phil and Indieland Don (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 21 November 2020 05:16 (three years ago) link

Desktop still uses Lingots, looks like.

oh HI DERE thread! Llama since 2010 myself, ready for B Meridian tomorrow; my flag will not take ironing. I don't too often take part in 1DS and MLs, but had fun both with 60s music and stuff-or-else til off-season. Good luck in the upcoming!

Looking good!

Doing all right; without doing the analysis, it feels like I've been a bit lucky in facing other Europeans on the most US-centric days. I guess A/B yo-yo may be approximately my true level atm.

anatol_merklich, Sunday, 22 November 2020 21:49 (three years ago) link

Yeah, I am currently at the top of the B/C yo-yo myself.

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 22 November 2020 22:24 (three years ago) link

pretty annoyed with myself for going with "corsair" over "corvette" yesterday. it was one of those things where corsair popped into my head and i thought "that sounds right" and then didn't put any more thought into it. fortunately i got lucky with a total guess on the beijing man question.

na (NA), Wednesday, 2 December 2020 14:32 (three years ago) link

i did exactly the same thing with corsair/corvette

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 2 December 2020 17:02 (three years ago) link

D'oh! "Atom" is from Greek, not Latin, of course.

three days ago i was in first place. now i'm tenth : /

mookieproof, Thursday, 3 December 2020 15:09 (three years ago) link

Do any of you have Premium memberships, if not Commissioner's Circle?

Robert Gotopieces (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 3 December 2020 15:35 (three years ago) link

I chose to pay for Premier the last time, but haven't really used any of the perks.

anatol_merklich, Thursday, 3 December 2020 16:02 (three years ago) link

My very very favorites are the ones where I truly don't know the answer but manage to reason my way to "the only thing it could be," like "ilium"
