And I totally dismiss this idea that Rubio and Oubre are nothing. Rubio helps teams win games and Oubre is a talented dude.

whatre the chances that paul is worse than rubio alone next year like 1/4

they arent nothing but they arent a reason to hold back a trade either.

they gave up practically nothing. oubre is a hair above average at best but they have wing depth to spare. rubio is an average player whose exact role on the team -- veteran PG -- is being replaced by a far superior player. the pick they traded would likely have been mid to late lottery even if they had continued the course. the franchise hasn't made the playoffs in 10 years, playing a full season of competitive basketball and potentially making the playoffs will prob feel really good. you can only lose for so long!

if they get the cp of the 1st half of last season then this will be a disaster but if they get 2nd half cp then it will be fine.

the only excuse i can think for trading oubre, a classic hard working can fit in anywhere type, is maybe he wouldnt stop asking everyone if they saw his fit picks on the gram

they have bridges and cam johnson who are arguably better than oubre... really they basically had three of the same player. sparing one (the older and more expensive one) to get chris paul is a totally acceptable move to me. oubre is probably, like, a 1 or 2 win above replacement player at best. he's totally expendable.

It just seems like an amazing coup for the thunder that they took chris Paul, who was considered such a negative asset that they got a bushel of picks for trading an inferior player, and then the next year got assets for him.

cp played himself into tradability

this was good for both franchises

having 3 good wings is actually technically speaking a good and desirable thing, you can even play them all at once, or you could pay a 35 y/o pg $10m more than your old pg and that wing made combined idk

xp i don't entirely disagree but i think there was an imperative out of houston to do that particular deal which presti recognized and used to drive the overpay.

if anyone can produce a single statistic showing that kelly oubre is anything more than a slightly above average player at best i'm all ears. his VORP last year was 0.7. box plus minus was -0.5. real plus minus was -3.05 (83rd among SF). by win shares he was roughly as good as monte morris, alec burks, and KCP. 538 raptor has him as the 108th best player in the league, right next to thomas satoransky and alec burks. this is an expendable player.

who cares about the suns salary cap? what are they spending that money on? ricky rubio and kelly oubre?

they also still have $18M in space this offseason to add a player and the #10 pick. that's pretty good!

i mean i think a lot of the enthusiasm for this trade is based on the assumption that the suns are just always gonna basically suck so why not have cp3 for a couple years which fine but it doesnt make it an actually good trade

i am glad we have figured out all the inflection points on this trade

- how good you think cp3 is likely to be going forward
- what you think the actual opportunity cost was to the suns
- where the suns are as a franchise/what you think they should be doing

if they make the playoffs and keep booker happy then its a good trade. pretty simple

having cp3 on yr team has not always been shown to provoke happiness in his teammates

there is very little to no opportunity cost to the suns taking on cp3's salary. if the opportunity cost is signing guys like rubio and oubre to above market rate deals to play for my sorry franchise give me chris paul's crazy contract that ends in 2 seasons.

the assumption that they couldnt possibly sign anyone beneficial to their team is silly, but of course by making this trade you are also passing up the opportunity to make a different trade

the vets that charlotte has acquired are like... nic batum, marvin williams, al jefferson, stephen jackson. aka guys who are not even half the player chris paul is

the player in this trade most similar to players previously acquired by the hornets is ricky rubio -- a low ceiling vet they had to overpay in order to acquire -- and i think it's good that they got rid of him, unlike certain posters in this thread, such as matt

the west is going to be even tougher next year and if the suns dont start making serious noise booker will probably just walk when his contract is up. they dont have another two years to wait for oubre to become productive

Wait for Oubre to become productive???? He averaged literally twice the points of their other 2 wings... and he's the same age as both of em despite being drafted like half a decade earlier lol. I'm no Suns fan, so if more dilligent followers of the team who watch them regularly are convinced Bridges and Cam Johnson are the future I won't necessarily disagree... but the idea that Oubre ins't productive or a positive player going forward, compared to the 2 24 year old rookie/sophmore wings that averaged like 8/4/1? Anyone drawing those kinda conclusions about their team's future based off the bubble performance are taking a massive gamble IMO.

well bridges is generally thought to be one of the best young defensive wings in the league. johnson isn’t as good as oubre but is generally providing the same skill set on a rookie deal as opposed to oubre’s $15 million expiring contract. they also have cap space to add more wing help if they need (ppl have mentioned gallo there), plus the no. 10 pick. you usually have to give something up to get something in a trade and the loss of oubre should be easily survivable for them
