ha ha yes. was watching '97 masters the other day and was taken aback to see that it was faldo putting the jacket on tiger and then remembering that faldo's comeback vs Norman was only the previous year so it wasn't as if tiger came on the scene when faldo was years and years past his prime, he came on the scene when faldo was still good enough to win majors! but as you say it seems like another era altogether.

three months pass...

SPIETH!!

oscar bravo, Saturday, 6 March 2021 18:29 (three years ago) link

four weeks pass...

I was four weeks early but SPIETH!!!!!!!! for real this time.

Really hope Patty Tavatanakit holds on to win the major tonight as she played a wonderful round 3 of p breathtaking golf. Averaging 316 off the tee, and straight, p amazing. Shout out to Shanshan Feng in contention after not playing a tournament for 16 months and actually during that span not touching a club at all for over a year. Also loved her answer when asked about what she did do during quarantine in China - "Well got up in the morning and thought about what I was going to have for breakfast, and after breakfast what I was going to have for lunch, and after lunch thought about what I was going to have for dinner. That was it really."

If you're someone who consciously marks the passage of time, this won't be surprising. I must have shut that off when it comes to golf, though, because the inclusion of Sergio Garcia in the "old guys" category here (#7) is very disorienting.

I still remember that major (PGA?) where he was 20 or something and almost overtook Tiger with that amazing shot from the woods.

clemenza, Monday, 5 April 2021 13:11 (three years ago) link

stoked for the masters

think will win - patrick cantlay or justin thomas
hope will win - hideki or westwood or sungjae im
would hate to win - brooks

kim and matsuyama good early returns :)

i was too much listening to your accent (Spottie), Thursday, 8 April 2021 17:06 (three years ago) link

Kim just snapped his putter in frustration, and is well in contention

Playing out the round using his 3 wood

your own personal qanon (darraghmac), Friday, 9 April 2021 20:54 (three years ago) link

his stroke with the 3 wood was so smooth on 16.

will zalatoris is legit. a top 25 machine considering he's still kinda a korn ferry tour player but results on the main tour have pushed him into the top 50 in the world in the meantime. his putting can be a bit iffy tho.

hope the greens on Saturday are more like
day one speed.

Rory just put a swing on it on #10 approach shot that looked like a 18 handicapper.

also SPIETH!!!!

oscar bravo, Friday, 9 April 2021 21:15 (three years ago) link

Lots of bad reads on greens

pulling hard for hideki, fascinating player

“I sat in my car looking at my cell phone.”

- Hideki Matsuyama on how he spent his 77-minute weather delay.

voodoo chili, Sunday, 11 April 2021 00:06 (three years ago) link

hideki post rain delay was sublime. only downside is how nervous i'll be watching him tonight.

i love how despite having a press pack from japan following him around from tournament to tournament for the last ten years they only found out he was married with a kid about 3 years after his actual wedding.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 11 April 2021 10:24 (three years ago) link

Fingers crossed for Hideki this evening. Seems bizarre that, 40 years after Aoki's near-miss, Japan still hasn't produced a male major winner. But then I've never quite understood why the French don't dominate clay-court tennis (probably based on watching exchange students rallying for hours in the local park when I was a kid... like, can they all do that?), instead of just one Roland Garros men's singles champ since WW2.

Michael Jones, Sunday, 11 April 2021 15:39 (three years ago) link

Well that was tighter than it needed to be but he got it done!

Xander really wet the bed on 16 he mighta been able to win it with a par and pressure

i was too much listening to your accent (Spottie), Monday, 12 April 2021 00:27 (three years ago) link

fun final day even if hideki was never in real peril

call all destroyer, Monday, 12 April 2021 00:28 (three years ago) link

xander also went +4 over three holes before recovering for six straight birdies

weird day for him, but hideki deserves the win and i’m happy he pulled it out

one month passes...

this course is brutal. looks like every tee shot is blind.

also... phil!?

i was too much listening to your accent (Spottie), Friday, 21 May 2021 20:54 (two years ago) link

Not up on golf these days, but I'll watch today. It'd be a miracle if Mickelson pulls this off, no?

clemenza, Sunday, 23 May 2021 18:36 (two years ago) link

I barely recognize him now that he looks so….in shape

Definitely pulling for him, would be the oldest player to win a major right?

frogbs, Sunday, 23 May 2021 19:40 (two years ago) link

Ok I just looked it up, he would be by about 2 years

frogbs, Sunday, 23 May 2021 19:41 (two years ago) link

"Old Man"? I know they mean that as a tribute, but geez.

clemenza, Sunday, 23 May 2021 19:59 (two years ago) link

fun that this keeps swinging back and forth & theyre still on the front 9

johnny crunch, Sunday, 23 May 2021 20:22 (two years ago) link

oostie has played really good today, couple shots are a few inches diff he could be level w phil rn

johnny crunch, Sunday, 23 May 2021 21:27 (two years ago) link

of course after i say that he fucked up 13

johnny crunch, Sunday, 23 May 2021 21:50 (two years ago) link

Glad Mickelson has a bit of a cushion; that looks gruesome.

clemenza, Sunday, 23 May 2021 22:45 (two years ago) link

Whew this is gonna be close

frogbs, Sunday, 23 May 2021 22:57 (two years ago) link

Never mind he’s got this

frogbs, Sunday, 23 May 2021 23:02 (two years ago) link

during the overhead crowd shots i remarked i hadnt seen that many ppl move en masse since jan 6

johnny crunch, Sunday, 23 May 2021 23:07 (two years ago) link

i hate that nantz had nothing better ready than "phil defeats father time"

johnny crunch, Sunday, 23 May 2021 23:10 (two years ago) link

I sure hope everyone there's been vaccinated! Anyway, glad I stuck around. I spent two decades rooting against Mickelson (because of Tiger) but I was pulling for him today.

clemenza, Sunday, 23 May 2021 23:13 (two years ago) link

i wonder how many times phil gave the thumbs-up today

mookieproof, Sunday, 23 May 2021 23:19 (two years ago) link

on some of those walkthroughs he was flashing it every 5 seconds, like clockwork. it was very odd to watch

on another note, I forgot that they don't get golf carts in these tournaments. nothing more riveting to watch on TV than a 50 year old man walking 300 yards

frogbs, Monday, 24 May 2021 01:32 (two years ago) link

Phil!!!! Can’t believe he did it. Thought he was toast after the first hole today

i was too much listening to your accent (Spottie), Monday, 24 May 2021 02:25 (two years ago) link

Even more than holing out from the sand, I thought his most amazing shot was that 365-yard drive down the middle.

clemenza, Monday, 24 May 2021 03:44 (two years ago) link

Yea that was nuts and you could tell he had it wrapped after that one

i was too much listening to your accent (Spottie), Monday, 24 May 2021 04:34 (two years ago) link

what scenes. great course for a tourney ,
awful for 'normal' golfers. another dent in the legend of brooks.

oscar bravo, Monday, 24 May 2021 12:01 (two years ago) link

Thought his last green approach was killer, that had plenty of potential to go awry

flagpost fucking (darraghmac), Monday, 24 May 2021 12:25 (two years ago) link

brooks sounded a little pissy about getting bumped by the crowd but i can’t blame him. that whole thing would have made me very uncomfortable (and unhappy with the tournament directors) even if i weren’t coming off knee surgery

mookieproof, Monday, 24 May 2021 12:25 (two years ago) link

It was nonsense but americans are gonna american hey

flagpost fucking (darraghmac), Monday, 24 May 2021 12:41 (two years ago) link

brooks vs bryson is heating up

i was too much listening to your accent (Spottie), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 20:23 (two years ago) link

thing is bryson bothers brooks a lot more than brooks bothers bryson. it is funny how much brooks openly loathes him tho.

oscar bravo, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 20:52 (two years ago) link

they both come off like jerks but golf needs something like this

i was too much listening to your accent (Spottie), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 22:21 (two years ago) link

one month passes...

No-one's interested in the Open? In the UK we have the excuse that it's not on the BBC anymore which tends to kill off interest in sports beyond dedicated fans.

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Sunday, 18 July 2021 17:37 (two years ago) link

I tend not to follow sport unless I can watch it live though I read reports.

Lol @ Oosthuizen fucking it up again.

Looked like a lovely afternoon of Golf.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 18 July 2021 17:41 (two years ago) link

Yes, I'd have loved to have spent a lazy Sunday afternoon/ evening watching it but I assume it's on Sky now. Anyway, it's finished, Morikawa won and I didn't see a second of it!

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Sunday, 18 July 2021 17:43 (two years ago) link

Yeah 20 or so years watching The Open :-(

Was almost as sad as when summer Test Cricket left terrestrial in 2005 (though radio can be adequate for cricket I've never got into it).

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 18 July 2021 17:58 (two years ago) link

lol watched north of 30 hours of it this week. spieth looking great again, rahm bad day with the putter. morikawa was sublime ,fantastic iron player.

oscar bravo, Sunday, 18 July 2021 17:58 (two years ago) link

the gap btwn his strokes gained approach and the number 2 is wider than btwn the number 2 and number 30.

been highlights on bbc every day btw
