When compiling my ballot I had to weigh "good for it's time" with "something I would still play today." Mario Kart 64 definitely skews toward the former; this is especially tricky with entries in series that only were refined over time

Huh, I only have 5 definites left - starting to think that Spyro and Breath of Fire III might not make it.

(Also tricky with games that I haven't actually played since they were still new-ish)

ive never been a zelda fan (altho ive never played majora's mask and i imagine that would absolutely be in my wheelhouse if i played it) and while i recognize this is a definite "TOO LOW" i would be lying if i said i didn't take a sick kind of pleasure in its placement

MM and OoT are such different beasts and I voted for them both. Trying to organize my thoughts & feelings about OoT is difficult. Also, it is like the video game equivalent of The Beatles in having been discussed to death; it's hard to know what else there is to say. That the title screen forgoes heroic fanfare in favor of Satie-esque melancholy was pretty unusual for the time and is sort of a microcosm of what this game does well.
