i honestly have no idea what is acceptable anymore ... I feel like the biggest differences on ilx are between "idealism vs. pragmatism" along with differences about expressing/handling trauma and anger.

sarahell, Friday, 13 November 2020 21:00 (three years ago) link

one thing i believe I've learned over nearly twenty (20) years on ilx is that taking aggro or obnoxious people on the internet too seriously is almost always the wrong way to handle the situation, even and especially if it causes the dreaded IRL fight or flight reflex

There's a BBQ at John Gacy's house
His neighbors are all invited
With Gacy cooking all the food
Everyone will be delighted
To make the BBQ
Annual Gacy has decided
For all his friends and neighbors
With the drinks and food provided

The annual party at Gacy's house
Everyone had much fun
He invited his friends and neighbors
And Gacy cooked for everyone
The BBQ at John Gacy's house
Everyone was outside
But nobody knew of the dead boys
That Gacy stashed inside

Gacy cooks the food at a furious pace
His BBQ pits ignited
While contemplating great BBQ
Everyone's very excited
The food is served, and they take a bite
Everyone is delighted
But they'd have a fit if under the pit
They knew dead bodies resided

There's a BBQ at John Gacy's house
Come on everybody let's go check it out
There's a BBQ at John Gacy's house
With free drinks and food we'll scream and shout
There's a BBQ at John Gacy's house
Where all the dead boys are buried about
There's a BBQ at John Gacy's house
Come on everybody let's go check it out

Now I have to pee

When you walk in there you best prepare, the smell of deaths all around
He was the clown who made boys frown at Gacy's house it was stinky
He's over the pit as the flames emit the favorite all over town
The hit of the day till you go urinate everyone knows it's stinky

It's stinky, stinky because of all the dead boys
It's stinky, stinky he didn't kill girls only boys

It's stinky, stinky because of all the dead boys
It's stinky, stinky he didn't kill girls only boys
At Gacy's house it was stinky
Everyone knows it's stinky

if the primary media you have consumed in the past month are twitter and podcasts then you don't get to sneer at people for (your perception of their) reading young adult books

healthy cocaine off perfect butts (the table is the table), Sunday, 22 November 2020 03:03 (three years ago) link

the latest instance of thousands of people unprovokedly ganging up on to mock what seem like a few perfectly nice people who didn't do anything morally wrong and who just seemed to be talking among themselves for wanting to know beforehand if the book they were reading was going to have a depressing ending

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Sunday, 22 November 2020 03:08 (three years ago) link

and this is as someone who both reads and writes things with rather bleak endings: who gives a fuck? who is harmed by this? conversely, why is this worth hurting people over, unless you just like hurting people? which more and more it seems most people do

I think people are just finding new ways to do it; baseline is still the same, more or less.

To look on the bright side, COVID-19 should extend all those projections of the eventual bankruptcy of the Social Security System by quite a few years.

Don't mind me, I'm just a third party troll aiming for low-hanging fruit. I know that things are far from fine in the UK right now, compared to other parts of Europe. The US is in a class of its own, of course.

Haven't gone to the trouble of blocking the word "starmer" on twitter but am getting pretty close to it.

where did this "brunch = liberal" thing come from? who amongst us does not like a good brunch now and then ?

sarahell, Sunday, 29 November 2020 20:16 (three years ago) link

there was a sign at one of the anti-trump marches that said something like if hillary won we’d be at brunch right now. left twitter turned it into a meme to make fun of the kind of privileged liberalism it was considered to typify. the meal “brunch” was collateral damage

a variation of the latte-sipping quinoa-munching metropolitan elite whatevers

calzino, Sunday, 29 November 2020 20:36 (three years ago) link

thank you both! it's just funny because the people I know on the left who are perpetuating the meme, are also privileged and eat brunch, or at least quiche, and it seemed like some narc of small d's to me

sarahell, Sunday, 29 November 2020 20:39 (three years ago) link

like, they used to go out to brunch on the regular until their neighborhoods got gentrified and the brunch prices and lines were "too much" and now they hate liberals and brunch

sarahell, Sunday, 29 November 2020 20:41 (three years ago) link

^^ aha! the motherlode!

sarahell, Sunday, 29 November 2020 20:43 (three years ago) link

it's often more of meme to use against the left in the UK, often by right wing MP's of the Labour party to suggest ppl like that Jezza Crumblyn is out of touch with the earthy w/c people they he is supposed to represent blah blah blah. And then sometimes it is used against them by tories to suggest their lack of enthusiasm for brexit makes them elitist scum. Nobody wins.. not even the quinoa brunch.

calzino, Sunday, 29 November 2020 20:48 (three years ago) link

there is definitely a lot of narcissism of small differences & protesting too much in the spats between liberals & leftists from similar cultural & class backgrounds

the weird thing is in the UK the socialist left gets hit with this effete cosmopolitan stuff more often from centrist liberals but in the US it seems to be the other way round

The post-occupy emphasis on the 1% (or the .1% or billionaires or some other classification) has obscured the divide between the upper-middle class and everyone else. For people in the top third socio-economically, the last couple of decades have been going quite well.
